Yes, Facebook Is Back!

-Account Available Icon-Yesterday, the week long Facebook outage which affected around 150,000 users was resolved. Lat night, Facebook spokeswoman Brandee Barker told CNET, “Our engineering team has worked around the clock, and as of today, all of these users should begin to regain access to their Facebook accounts.” It was a painful experience for many. CNET reported that “less than 0.05 percent” of Facebook accounts were affected.

Apparently 99.95% reliability is still unacceptable for Facebook! Over 70 people voiced their frustrations in our post from yesterday, where we covered the ongoing outage. The commenters were relatively calm yet anxious to get their accounts back. One user stated, “I’m in Iraq and all I want is to be able to see my friends and family”.

This is probably the single largest outage for Facebook that we’ve seen while covering the company for the past two and a half years. For those of you who weren’t able to access the site, you can now stop working and waste your time stalking friends and family on the site! Or as many commenters noted, you can now log in to check your Farmville farms.

Given that Facebook has become the center of communication for many of the more than 300 million users, it’s understandable that people would become frustrated with reliability issues. Even though the service is free, users have come to expect 100 percent reliability. Reliability was arguably one of the primary reasons that Friendster lost its popularity to MySpace years ago, and there is no doubt that Facebook would like to prevent similar issues from plaguing the site.

Thankfully, the approximately 150,000 users that weren’t able to login can no return to business as usual.

  2. I noticed about a week ago that I suddenly started having problems logging in…it would take forever for the page to load and when it did it would suddenly be in Spanish, or my newsfeed was two days old, or my account was temporarily unavailable, just to name a few. On the off chance that I actually got in and everything looked normal, I'd click on my profile button and the only thing I could see was my Info and it said I had no recent wall posts and no friends. Unfortunately, this is still happening so I'm wondering if it was completely fixed??

  3. I'm having the same problems as Michele. Log in is an ongoing issue, and the site is up/down/up/down no matter what I try to do. It is a pain in the butt; I'm sure it's not completely fixed.

    Comment by Glenn — October 15, 2009 @ 12:22 pm

  4. Michele, the same thing is happening to me since yesterday. Nick, is there any hope of this getting fixed any time soon? Whatever is going on, it's obviously not working, so rollback the clock, Facebook.

  5. I'm still having problems logging in as well. I get either a site maintenance message or a message that says my account is temporarily unavailable due to a site error.

  6. Dont be too certain, looks like this might just have reoccured. Myself and several friends can not log in this moment and our accounts are disabled…

    Comment by Rob — October 16, 2009 @ 2:21 am

  7. Nothing but problems here. Trouble logging in, error messages all over the place, friends not showing up or their pages locked as if we weren't already friends, news feed not updating. This is going on well over a week for me.

  8. I was able to access briefly this afternoon but as of 9:05PM Eastern on October 17, FaceBook is STILL not working for me. Sigh.

  9. I've spent an hour trying to find a Facebook email contact to report the following issue:

-Can't view any of my friends' wall/status updates/photos

Have checked with Friends and they assured me I haven't been blocked. They tried deleting me and adding me, but still can't view them.

-Friends (who I haven't blocked) can't access my wall either

I really would hate to delete my account and start from scratch.

  10. I've been also having issues for about three weeks now. It started working again properly then conked out again and it's impossible to contact FB, though I have reported the issue. They haven't updated their site and still have a message saying all issues have been resolved when clearly they haven't been. Very much on rhe brink of just giving up and deletingmy profile because why bother is nothing works and FB is woefuy silent and uncommunicative?

    Comment by Tanya — October 18, 2009 @ 9:44 am

  11. Not sure this is true since it just started to happen to me yesterday.

    Comment by Anna — October 18, 2009 @ 12:25 pm

  12. The issue is definately NOT fixed.

I am having problems logging into my FB account, but everyone once and a while I am able to get in, but all my friends and photos have disappeared.

Ironically, I can see my friends from the mobile site on my browser.

    It's pretty frustrating.

  13. I CANN"T LOG in at all and it has been WEEKS! Does anyone know exactly what they fixed because it's a complete lie! They have in NO way fixed their issues and amazingly they print a story that it's all fixed and they offer ZERO support for their issues!

    Comment by natalie — October 18, 2009 @ 2:18 pm

  14. The problems described above have persisted on my account for the past week and are worse than ever today – the few posts that are visible are old, new posts disappear, all friends are gone, constant error message – just a mess

    Comment by DickH — October 18, 2009 @ 7:41 pm

  15. I am STILL having this issue on 10/18. On a brief moment I might get in and find out I have no friends, but when I try to “friend them” again, it tells me we’re already friends. Anyone know how to fix this issue?

    Comment by deb green — October 18, 2009 @ 10:01 pm

  16. Same issue here. Been like this for about 5 days now.

  17. This is STILL NOT FIXED!

I have constant issues and error messages all the time when using facebook (been this way for about a week and a half now). I alternate through the following errors:

    1) Username/password incorrect. After getting this error I just submit again and it logs me in.
    2) Visiting my profile wall shows no posts.
    3) My newsfeed is only populated with stories from the pages I am fans of (no stories from my friends)
    4) Just trying to click around the site causes constant errors.
    5) Constantly having to re-login to facebook for iphone app.
    6) If i login to my wife’s account I don’t get any of the above errors, even when using the same computer or iphone.
    7) I get error messages when I try to send messages telling me the message didn’t go out (when in fact it did)

Facebook, if you’re reading this…please help fix my account….it’s almost useless b/c of all the bugs!

    Comment by eric — October 19, 2009 @ 3:09 pm

  18. I get the same error as Jose above:

“I’m still having problems logging in as well. I get either a site maintenance message or a message that says my account is temporarily unavailable due to a site error.”

I get the same error, but if I immediately try to login it lets me, only to have all kinds of errors occur. then I just get logged out.

    Comment by eric — October 19, 2009 @ 3:11 pm

  19. I have had this same problem since October 3rd. This is crazy when I go to log on I get fonts that look like wingdings.I have tried to log on numerous times today and still cannot get on. Their issues are not fixed. But if you are like me and cannot access facebook, try facebook lite. You can comment and post on your wall, u just cant go to any apps! :(

    Comment by Stacy — October 19, 2009 @ 4:13 pm

  20. I am having all of the same problems for over two weeks now, do you think it is time for me to just give up on my account. I really don’t want to delete and start over, and I don’t want to find a new app to use cause everyone I know is on facebook. What do you recommend since I can not report any issues directly to facebook. thanks

    Comment by chris — October 19, 2009 @ 11:32 pm

  21. This issue is still not resolved as I am still unable to log in to my FB account, still don’t have any of my friends (currently listed as “0″ friends), etc. Maybe FB should not announce they have fixed everything when there are still numbers of it who still have the same problem.

    Comment by Travis — October 20, 2009 @ 2:08 pm

  22. I am having the same problem also. I constantly get site maintenance notifications when I try to log in. I am listed as having “0″ friends. Facebook definitely has not fixed this problem and I want to know when they will!!

  26. I continue to have the same problems….sign-in…down for maintenance messages….elimination of friends list…and on and on. Very frustrating. Have the same problems on my iPhone. No response to emails to the folks at Facebook.

    Comment by Bernie — October 23, 2009 @ 8:09 am

  27. The problem still exists as of this morning. I have continual problems accessing my photos … sending inbox messages … and my profile shows that I have zero friends. I came to the Internet to see if the issue was restricted to my account … that is how i found your blog message.

Is there anything that I can do to fix it? Or do I simply wait?

    peace, Wayne

  32. I didn’t have a problem prior to last night… I started getting the “Account Down For Maint” notice, saying that my account would be available in a few hours. Well it’s been more than a few hours and I still cannot access my account. I can’t access it from my iPhone either or Facebook Lite. When my husband logs in and looks at my wall, it’s like I never posted a thing…it’s completely blank. Does anyone know how we can get complaints to Facebook? In any case, whatever problems they thought they fixed, they didn’t…

    Comment by Stephenie — October 24, 2009 @ 1:24 pm

  33. Having the same problem as you all. I had all of these issues last week, emailed FB and they didn’t help. They suddenly it was fine and now I’m back to having the same issues again. Agree – this is getting old!!

    Comment by Lisa — October 24, 2009 @ 3:38 pm

  34. Sunday 25 October..still having these issues since they introduced that “Live Feed” nonsense. No friends showing, old posts no pics. Continual account under maintenance or site issue messages. Clearly it’s not resolved

    Comment by katy — October 25, 2009 @ 6:35 pm

  35. I am still having the same problem. It will sometimes log me in but with no friends and 0 people chating. Or sometimes will say “account is temporally unavilable”. UURRGGGGG I am getting so frustrated!!

  36. Still the same problems, if not worse. Just created a new account, works just fine. Now I just have to restore everything. AAA!!!!!!!!

    Comment by kate — October 26, 2009 @ 2:27 pm

  37. Facebook is starting to really annoy me!
Since they introduced the ‘live feed’, i can only login to my account less than half the time, and that is after shutting my computer down, and attempting to login several times while either getting the errors: “unavailable do to sit maintnenance” , “account is unavailble”, or “retry in a few minutes”. When i finally do get on my account, it acts as though i am new and says welcome to facebook! It shows that i have 0 friends, will not let me access my inbox, and on the newsfeed it only shows posts from myself, fan pages, and groups! Every once in awhile it will work normally, but only for a few minutes.
    Someone please help me!

  38. I am having the same issue the constant account down for maintenance message, been over a week now, and I emailed facebook and they emailed me back saying there was nothing wrong with my account, tried on numerous different computers and i get the same thing, so I think this has to be a facebook server issue and since it’s not affecting too many people they don’t care to fix it

    Comment by Fletcher — October 26, 2009 @ 6:23 pm

  39. I’m still getting a massive amount of errors. Its pretty much unusable right now.

    Comment by Michael — October 26, 2009 @ 6:40 pm

  40. For the record, I’m still having the problems I listed above and Caroline has described my problems perfectly.

I’ve been going on 2 weeks now with almost no facebook access.

Someone at facebook please read this and fix the problem. Don’t ignore us just because you can

    Comment by Eric — October 26, 2009 @ 8:31 pm

  41. Same problems as described above, for over two weeks, constant site maintenance errors, now when I do get in I only see messages in the feed that I am a fan of, not any of my friends status updates, etc.

    Comment by James — October 27, 2009 @ 12:57 pm

  44. I STILL have the problem. It’s been since last Friday, and today’s Tuesday.

I may get in accidentally, but after clicking anywhere get the “database maintenance” problem. As we all know, there’s no way to actually contact FaceBook. I DID find the “report database maintenance problem” form, and sent it, but got the “we read these, but don’t reply” message.

To the big cheese at Facebook, this is NOT fixed.

  48. there are way too many errors that everyone was told were fixed,so how come everyone is still having problems with connection server"please try again"?things disappearing from games or having to restart games all of the time, not receiving gifts that people have accepted and the list just goes on and on. Are these problems going to ever get fixed? or are you just going to tell the general public a lie, that they have been fixed. Please do the right thing, fix everything properly, don't try to enhance because it seems that when you do that it just causes more problems. No offense intended, but you get paid good money to do the job and we pay for internet service which allows us to have face book, so we deserve not to be treated like a bunch of idiots. thank-you and hope ya'll have a Merry Christmas.

  49. It’s been 2 days I cant access farmville . it has disappeared from my applications in FACEBOOK and I have disapppeared in my neighbors’ lists…. If I try to go to the site, the message is that it’s unavailable or restricted.
