Yahoo! Announces Company Wide Implementation Of Facebook Connect

-Yahoo! Logo-Over the summer I wrote about the Facebookization of Yahoo! as the company implemented support for Facebook from the Yahoo! homepage. Today, the company announced more widespread support of Facebook by implementing “Facebook Connect across Yahoo! properties worldwide”. This is a massive announcement for Facebook as Yahoo! is the largest portal on the web.

While Facebook has surpassed Yahoo! to become the second largest site on the web, according to the latest Alexa data, having one of the largest internet properties in the world implement Connect is a massive win for Facebook. Not only does it solidify Facebook as an open identity platform but it also massively expands the reach of Facebook Connect, giving competing services little hope in the ongoing battle for our identities.

-Facebook vs Yahoo Chart-

According to Jim Stoneham of Yahoo!, Facebook Connect will be implemented across “Yahoo! Mail, Yahoo! News, Yahoo! Answers and Yahoo! Sports”. Kara Swisher states that Flickr will be another Yahoo! owned property which implements Facebook Connect, which will definitely be interesting considering Flickr is the biggest competitor to Facebook Photos.

Today’s announcement by Yahoo! is a huge win for Facebook in the company’s ongoing push for making Facebook Connect the most widely used identity platform on the web.

  5. [...] The social network does extra work support competitors despite having the upper hand. At this point users are limited to logging in with Facebook and Yahoo, which for some reason Facebook doesn’t seem to consider much of a competitor, especially with Carol Bartz at the helm.
