Will Michael Jackson Become The Most Popular Person On Facebook?

Last week when Michael Jackson passed away I wrote about the tremendous growth in his Facebook Page as it transformed into a memorial site. Since then, the page has quadrupled in size and has increased in its rate of growth. As the chart below illustrates, his Page had around 2.9 million fans as of last night and by 11:15 AM EDT today he attracted 3,348,349 fans. Currently the largest Facebook Page is Barack Obama who has approximately 6.42 million fans but is only growing by a few thousand fans a day.

Since his death Michael Jackson’s music has been selling like crazy. Over the weekend he owned the iTunes leaderboard, at one point having 9 of the top 10 selling songs with a similar picture for the top selling albums. If you viewed the most popular selling albums he actually had close to 50 of the top 100 selling albums, a feat that will most likely never be accomplished anytime in the next century.

While he reportedly had something like $400 million in debt, a large portion of that was owed to Sony Records. Sony has now easily recouped a large portion of those debts through the massive number of songs and records that have been sold since last Thursday. Now the only accomplishment left for Michael Jackson is to become the most popular on Facebook.

Conversation about the pop legend has sparked tons of controversy. Last week I posted something on my profile about him and a debate sparked up instantly with people complaining about how much attention he has been receiving despite his shady history. Regardless of the controversy, he is easily one of the most recognized brands in the world and his growth on Facebook highlights just that.

It will be interesting to see if his death will be able to catapult him to the top of the Facebook Pages leaderboard.

  1. Michael Jackson was an amazing & innovative entertainer. I became a fan of the Jackson 5 in the ’70′s. He was a philanthropic humanitarian, a kind soul.

  3. Surely, he was a legend and the world is going to miss him. Not only facebook, he is the most searched topic on every social media site.

Therfore, to pay my humble tribute to the rockstar, I have compiled his hit album covers, magazine appearnces, potraits and some unrevealed facts about his last days.

  4. I reckon' he already is. The King of Pop is represented by over 540 Fan Pages and 548 Groups containing millions of people. There are also 323 Michael Jackson applications and over 500 Michael Jackson-events. The five biggest Michael Jackson Fan Pages have over 7.5 million fans and the six biggest Michael Jackson Groups have about 400,000 members. Judging by these figures there is no doubt that Michael Jackson will become immortal and take his place alongside Elvis who has over 320 Fan Pages and about 500 Groups on Facebook. Long live the King and the King of Pop!

  6. Michael Jackson was a talented but tormented soul. He was born a man, but apparently really wanted to be woman/girl. He changed his voice, underwent plastic surgery, grew his hair long, and underwent plastic surgery to appear more feminine, to reflect his inner "Michelle." Unfortunately, being a famous person in a famous family made it all the more difficult for him to transition to female status without causing a ruckus. So he tried to convince the public of his femaleness without explicitly saying so. But he died to soon. While I was never a fan of his music, he did contribute a lot to the diversification of mainstream pop.
