It has been almost 7 months since the Facebook platform launched and almost 11,000 applications have been developed for the platform. If you browse through the Facebook application directory you will quickly realize that Facebook is a place that is used to spend your free time (or at least procrastinate when you should be doing something else). It is one of the most addictive sites on the web currently and it continues to grow at a phenomenal pace.
Back in July I suggested that there would eventually be a golden application on Facebook. Since then, there have been a few that have come close but nothing has been ground breaking. I’m starting to think that we shouldn’t hold our breath while waiting for the golden app. I’m not quite sure what would make an application golden but I do know that we haven’t seen it yet.
So what is the productive social netwrok? I’m beginning to think that LinkedIn may be it. Salesforce has partnered with LinkedIn to be a launch partner on their new platform. While Facebook provides highly useful personal data that can be used for sales, LinkedIn shows how you are connected to other professional and that is also a great tool for closing a sale. If LinkedIn allowed you to optionally place other personal information such as interests, hobbies, etc, it would be the ultimate sales tool.
Do you think Facebook will replace LinkedIn or is there still hope for LinkedIn to continue as the market leader in profesional social networking?

I don't think facebook will replace LinkedIn because both networks have their own unique features that appeal to different types of people. I used to have a LinkedIn profile and I wasn't a huge fan of it.Also, with facebook many enjoy it because they can network with business people and network with their friends. FB is a one-stop shop.As for the "Golden App" I may have something close to it. My business partner and I launched recently launched an app that's both fun and useful. It took two years for VisiCalc to appear on the Apple II. I don't see why you're in such a rush to find Facebook's killer app. I mean, six months? Come on.

Yeah, but I added an application on Facebook that displays my LinkedIn connections as well as all of the information on the profile.So why leave Facebook? You can get access to LinkedIn from the FB profile.

Yeah, but I added an application on Facebook that displays my LinkedIn connections as well as all of the information on the profile.
So why leave Facebook? You can get access to LinkedIn from the FB profile.

I don't think facebook will ever take over LinkedIn in the "professional networking" arena because it is a completely different target market.
Facebook was initially created for college kids,.
While there are professionals on facebook, LinkedIn is here to stay.
I think another reason facebook will never be up to LinkedIn caliber is because there is no "time wasting" that goes on in the LinkedIn interface, whereas in facebook it is everywhere.
Comparing LinkedIn to Facebook is like comparing Apples to Oranges.

The Facebook userbase has to grow up. I don't mean this in a negative way, it's just that still 80% of users are 25 and under, and less likely to be interested in general productivity applications. If a productivity application is to be successful soon, it's going to have to be specifically interesting to those 18-25, and LinkedIn isn't it.

Being a recent college graduate and job holder, it's pretty apparent the lack of disregard current college students have for their public image. The head-hunter that hired me told me during a sit-down lunch after I was hired, that he purposely tried to access my FB profile as he does with every potential candidate and that doing this is wide-spread, common and acceptable for all recruiter and hiring processes. (this includes myspace)… he's told me stories of him recommending to hiring managers to outright reject candidates (or sometimes doesn't even mention them) based on what they see on these profiles…… while no deserves to be judged by what's on their internet profiles, guess what, it happens and 100% control of this potentially discriminating content is in the hands of the creator…. I've made and met business contacts on linkedin, I know that if my FB profile was available for them to see, I'd probably have fewer of those contacts than I do now… so everyone do themselves a favor, keep your facebook profile private… it's more public than you would ever know.
