According to Download Squad, the United Arab Emirates has blocked Facebook. I honestly feel sorry for the UAE citizens that now have to live without Facebook. I’m sure they’ll find a way to manage but this is pretty bad. If you can empathize with them, go sign the petition to get them to unblock the site.
According to Download Squad, a large number of websites are blocked in the UAE “on the basis that they are against the moral or religious values of the UAE.” Blocking of sites is random though and has frequently been used for anti-competitive purposes rather than a result of going against any moral values. Judging websites on the basis of “moral values” is pretty subjective. While I’m not quite sure if you need to be a citizen of the UAE to sign the petition, it’s definitely worth signing. Hopefully the UAE citizens can get back their Facebook!

Today Facebook was blocked again! February 03 is the day that the UAE has officially made it impossible for me to contact my friends abroad.

What is most disturbing to me personally is that a social networking website that I built on July 13, 2008 was censored in the UAE the following day, on July 14, 2008. The Hotel SEO Executives is a group that tallies only 20 members to date. It is a network of hoteliers and SEO executives worldwide that collaboratively exchange ideas and information pertaining to search engine optimization in the hotel industry. Hardly a threatening group! Definitely not an organization that would harm “the religious, cultural, political and moral values of the United Arab Emirates!†But yet a Hyatt Dubai hotel executive was blocked by Etisalat from registering on just that site.
