Trimble Outdoors Could Have Used Facebook Connect Instead

Trimble Outdoors, a GPS tracking and mapping site that lets you share your outdoor trips, has just launched its Facebook application. With this app, you can connect your Trimble account with your Facebook account in order to share trips on Facebook with friends.

After adding the application on Facebook, you’ll need to create a Trimble account if you don’t already have one. From there, you can port content from the Trimble site into Facebook, where the content will be shared within the application and across your newsfeeds. This shared content can consist of photos, GPS-based information, maps and more.

One drawback to Trimble’s Facebook app is the inability to add content from within the application if you’re just getting started. You’ll need to go to Trimble’s website in order to add a trip, and only then will this trip be displayed through the Facebook app. If you don’t have any friends that have also added the Trimble application, then there will be very little content to work with for newcomers.

The good thing about Trimble’s website is that public trips can be shared and saved to others’ accounts. So doing a quick search on Trimble can lead you to a trip you find interesting, and adding this to your account will result in you’re sharing a trip through Trimble’s Facebook application. Anyone that clicks on trips found through the Trimble Facebook application however, will be redirected to Trimble’s site, effectively minimizing the amount of interaction a user has within the app.

While other trip-sharing applications on Facebook like TrailBehind have more user-generated actions and search options directly accessible within the application, Trimble redirects much of its traffic back to its main site in order to gain additional information regarding a given trip. In this regard, I would imagine that utilizing Facebook Connect could have been less cumbersome for end users and more effective as a sharing tool within the Facebook environment.
