This Week In Facebook – November 15, 2009

-This Week In Facebook Icon-While Facebook didn’t have any significant announcements this week, it was another difficult week for publishers and advertisers who had participated in aggressive mobile offers for generating revenue. A law firm published that they are investigating a potential class action suit against a number of industry participants, currently looking for victims of reverse mobile billing scams from Facebook and other social platforms.

New Class Action Investigation

As we wrote on Friday, a law firm is going after the aggressive advertisers that have attracted a significant amount of coverage over the past couple weeks. While there is no official case yet, the company is currently investigating claims by victims of reverse mobile billing scams. Whether it’s IQ Quizzes or the Computer Professor videos, the law firm involved is looking for those that have been victims of auto-subscription services. You can learn more at the firm’s website.

Tweetdeck For iPhone Now Supports Facebook

Tweetdeck, the social browser utility, added support for Facebook on their iPhone application. While many users have found other iPhone application to be most effective for viewing status updates, Tweetdeck has built a large following. With the extended Facebook support, users will be able to track all their status updates while on the go from a single app.

Facebook Changes Promotion Terms

One of the most significant changes of the week was the update of the Facebook promotion terms. Facebook must now approve all campaigns that run on their site and all promotions are limited to being posted within Facebook applications and Facebook page tabs. According to Caroline McCarthy, getting approval, will require a budget of at least $10,000 a month, so that Facebook can assign you an account representative.

Sound like a lot? For many people it is, which is why I’m sure many people will attempt the “do it yourself” model and risk having issues with Facebook. As one legal expert told Caroline McCarthy though, “The (new Facebook) guidelines really cover only a narrow subset of promotions, specifically sweepstakes, contests, and similar competitions”. That means Facebook may only have updated the terms to cover themselves.

Whether or not the company will start shutting down promotions that violate the terms has yet to be seen, but my guess is that many people will try to slip through the cracks.

Someone Hijacking Groups To Build Awareness About Online Security

Last week, an individual (or group) set up a website, called “Control Your Info“, focused on building security awareness. In order to promote the website, a number of public Facebook groups that didn’t have administrators were modified with links pointing back to the promotional website.

It’s not actually a flaw with Facebook’s security though. Instead it was a clever individual which exploited one of the weaknesses in public groups on Facebook: if there is no administrator assigned, anybody that becomes a member can become the administrator.

Bejeweled Blitz Launches On The iPhone

Bejeweled Blitz, the Popcap developed game that started on Facebook, has now expanded to the iPhone. While we don’t know how many people have installed the iPhone version just yet, there are over 10.6 million monthly active users playing Bejeweled Blitz. I’m one of the most addicted which is why we continue to cover it. If you are looking for a game to keep you busy, I highly recommend trying out Bejeweled Blitz.
