The Story Behind Facebook’s “Secret” Audio Application

-Music Player Icon-Last week I wrote that Facebook may be launching an audio product given the addition of audio within the page insights area. I reached out to Facebook for comment and found out that this wasn’t actually a soon to be released product, but instead an audio product that already exists. The “Music Player” application originally launched with pages and lets you upload songs for your fans to listen to.

While I wouldn’t exactly call this a robust application, it provides enough support for you to at least get songs posted on your page. This tool would be most useful for musicians. I haven’t really seen many pages that take advantage of this application for anything outside of music promotion. As I alluded to in the previous article, it would make a lot of sense for Facebook to release a more robust audio application.

There are currently a number of “podcast” applications which let you upload audio to your Page, but there aren’t any popular applications that let you post custom audio to your friend’s wall. While not all people prefer to communicate via audio, the concept of being able to post audio messages to your friends’ walls sounds cool to me for some reason.

For the time being, this application is to those individuals that want to post audio to their Facebook Page. While this application doesn’t appear to let people post audio to their stream, there’s a relatively large number of people that have taken advantage of the basic features provided. Right now there are over 200,000 fans of the application, but we don’t know the exact number of users since Facebook doesn’t report those numbers for this application.

Do you think an audio application would be useful? Have you used the “Music Player” application on your Facebook Page?

  2. Russian Facebook clone, VKontakte.Ru, has the ability to post audio, video and “graffiti” (simple doodlings) to your friend’s wall for a long time now. The feature is very, very popular.

  4. Hi nick,

we used the audio announcements on our fan pages for advertisements or nightclub promos… we stopped using them because we were not getting enough clicks, and we had to constantly remind people of it… in the future we will be using it but for corporate events, promos, etc…

    thanks I love this website!

  7. Hey Nick,

I've been using the audio player for quite some time now without too many problems. Thing is, it has stopped working the way it should. The top track can be played, but clicking on a different track doesn't seem to get it to change songs anymore. This happened just about the time you posted this blog. The really weird thing is, I can't find anyone else complaining about it! I've checked it on multiple computer both at home and work and sure enough it's not working…on my facebook page or any other from what I can tell! anyone know what's going on or familiar with this seemingly recent problem?

Have a look and see what I mean. Only the top track seems to play!

  8. my facebook “PAGE” for my NPR affiliate has the same problem as Sean.

only the top song will play … you can fastforward to the end of the song by manually scrolling, then it jumps to the next track.

you can see what i mean — the page is open to anyone:

  12. "Music Player" simply is a fraud. Go to the Music Player App page on fb and you will see many people incredibly frustrated because they cannot either figure out how to add Music Player to their site, or else if they can, it does not work properly. The technical information on how to install Music Player given by FaceBook is minimal, and there is some remark now about needing to prove one is actually the owner of the music. Still, people who have sent in official identifications, never hear back from FaceBook. As I said, this application is a fraud. So many musicians want to add their music, and FaceBook is allowing people to beg for help, this has been happening now for two years, and FaceBook just sits by and does nothing. Occasionally, an individual discovers some "secret" way to install "Music Player" but it seems no soon as they discover how to get Music Player on their site, other individuals who try to copy their technique meet with failure. Just look at Yahoo Answers for example. Someone posted a simple question on how to add Music Player, yet *NO ONE* was able to answer it. FaceBook should be ashamed of itself!

  13. Fortunately (or unfortunately?) I managed to install the application, but it limits file size to 15 (read: fifteen) MB. I know it is roughly enough for short songs, but I would like to upload seminars and longer stuff. I would be happy with 30-35 MB. Is there a way to upload longer files?

  14. I'm so glad I found this page. I'm a radio announcer/producer. The possibilities for radio people are endless! Thank you. I have needed this for years.

  15. How did you get it to work? I added the music application to my page but it doesn't show up in apps and I can't find ANY instruction on how to use the app. Urghhhh
