While tech pundits are widely praising Google’s new Plus product, I’ve found the one feature that could take away from Facebook where it’s most dominant: Time on the site.
Facebook users are known for staying on the site for over half an hour a day, something no other site could compete with… until now.
To be honest, my gut reaction after using Google Plus was initially, “Why on earth would anybody switch to this from Facebook?”
However, when I loaded up Google Finance as I do every morning, I suddenly realized that I was asking the wrong question. The reality is that users won’t have the option of not using Google Plus.
Google already has more users than Facebook, over one billion. They aren’t going to suddenly leave Facebook in droves, they’re just going to spend more time on all the sites in Google’s network. That big notifications box in the top right of all Google sites is the reason why.
As I’m browsing around Google-powered sites there’s occasionally a red notification alert that pops up and immediately grabs my attention. Soon enough I’m clicking through the various notifications and seeing what my friends have shared and who has recently begun sharing with me.

It’s a not-so-subtle tactic by Google to quickly increase the amount of time you end up spending on Google properties. It’s also an easy way to immediately add social discovery to all of Google’s products.
The notifications box is also something that Google could leverage to steal one of Facebook’s most valuable assets: developers.
Something like 30 percent or more of all Facebook users’ time on the site is from applications. While Zynga, which is reportedly filing to go public this week, has built a multi-billion dollar business on top of the platform, it has little loyalty to the company.
The primary reason is that Facebook is now taking a 30 percent cut of every game developer’s business. By contrast, Google, which brings in over $30 billion in revenue each year, could easily afford to let developers keep all the money they generate.
Add in the fact that Google also has the fastest growing mobile distribution channel of any company (Android) and you suddenly realize the power that the search giant has to woo developers.
No, Google Plus is not a “Facebook killer,” but despite the company’s numerous failed attempts at getting into social media, the new Plus product gives users no other option but to accept the fact that Google is becoming exactly that: social.
This is clearly just the start, though. Once Google Plus becomes stable and more widely used, the company will attempt to compete with Facebook where it matters most by building an entire social platform. The notifications are just one indicator of what lays ahead.
Readers, have you tried Google Plus yet — do you think it has the potential to cut into your use of Facebook?
Disclosure: I own shares of Google.
Update
Looks like I was dead on with the platform prediction … there’s now code already showing their interest in launching games within the system.

The problem I have with the +1 button is that you have to be logged in to google to use it or even see it. I use google every single day, I never log in. I wonder how many others never log in to google.

I think you have a typo. Didn't you mean to write: “Why on earth would anybody NOT switch to this from Facebook?”. You might be wise to change your site name to "All Google +". Finally, a decent alternative to Headbook…. or whatever they call that thing.

I definitely think that this is something that can take me away from facebook. Ok, I know that facebook has friend lists and such, but for some reason or another I just never really used them. They didn't seem to be a stand out feature to me. So, I always just posted stuff on my wall. Everyone could see everything that I posted on my wall. Everyone. Everything… I guess, I just feel that not everything I say is appropriate to everybody I know (or have met online). I did get to play around with Google+ today, and I liked the way it was built with "Circles" as a foundation. But, yeah… I am also seeing all the changes they are making on other sites as well, and I am eagerly waiting to see how they are going to incorporate things like Google Docs, Gmail, Calendar, and even Google Chrome into Google+.
Comment by Dominique — June 30, 2011 @ 2:04 pm
I think the smartest thing Google can do right now is to get a Chrome extension out that takes the Google bar to every site you go to when you leave Google that way you get notifications on other sites and will wan't to go right back to Google+
I also think Google needs to be more liberal on invites because if people don't have enough people to test this out with then they could lose interest which is why Wave failed is because not enough people used it and the core users lost interest.

Having finally found my way around Facebook, I hesitate to stress out my middle-aged brain cells by tackling yet another learning curve. However, I will check it out. I don't use Google Mail because I find it awkward and confusing. I have missed replies because they were piggybacked onto my original emails. I don't like labels. Give me folders, dammit!

Comment by Naveen — June 30, 2011 @ 2:35 pm
I just started Google+, and although it's currently lacking in users due to the limited release, I see a LOT of potential here. Circles is the simple friend organizational tool that Facebook never quite hit the mark on (don't you HATE getting invited to an old high school acquaintance's event because he sent it to his entire friends list!?). Hangouts is going to kill Skype. This is finally going to give people a reason to start using other Google features like Picasa.
This is one step closer to an internet experience that I've always felt like we're moving toward: you don't open a web browser and access the internet through that. You open a web browser and then log into your universal internet ID, and access the internet through THAT. Kind of scary, kind of exciting.

I think you should give Google Mail another try! The problems you mentioned can be fixed with different settings. You can turn off "conversation view" so each new reply is a new email. Each "label" is a folder and you can select to move your emails to these folders as you do with any other email client. Those things were the things that also bugged me in the beggining until I learned I could change them!

Comment by Carol — June 30, 2011 @ 3:42 pm
This circles thing is what excites me the most about Google + and it's actually what bugged me on Facebook. I don't want to share everything with everybody, but don't have the time to micro manage Facebook to set up things in a way that people that I don't want to share certain things don't see them.
Comment by Carol — June 30, 2011 @ 3:45 pm
I'm not a Google + user, but I think the biggest problem I have with social media is lack of privacy. I think Google is thinking about that with the circles in Google +, but I'm not sure that would solve all the privacy problems. For example, I go back to my country once a year or once every 2 years for a 2, 3 week trip. I don't have the time to see "everybody", but with social media, "other people" post pictures and updates showing where I am. Suddenly everybody knows I'm home and want to see me… That sounds silly, but it sucks! I feel like big brother is watching! I can't go anywhere in the world without everybody knowing where I am, not because I post updates, but because other people do…

I love the layout of Google+ it is clean and easy to navigate I love the friend circles it makes it easy to see what from who I want as well as I love the notification so I can be doing something else and see the red pop up and go check it ….and I love the sparks I love being able to have things I normally search for easier to find. Overall yes I love the new Google +
Comment by Jbunny — June 30, 2011 @ 7:41 pm
Just got to play around with Google+ myself, and regardless of whether or not my friends go to it, I'll keep using it just for the Sparks – it's been so hard to find a service that gathers articles that interest me from all over the web in a neat, easy way with just a little summary. StumbleUpon is okay, but I find a lot of it is stuff I don't really want to see, and just having the sites in feed form means I can skip over things I don't want to deal with. If they give me the ability to send my updates to Twitter and pull in updates from Twitter and Facebook, I'd switch over completely and never go to either of those sites again.
Comment by Ariel — June 30, 2011 @ 7:51 pm
1) they block off invitation is a bad decision

I think G+ may be a threat to Facebook, because the design is very pleasant, the reaction to the news was very positive and above all G+ allows you to share news with specific groups of people while surfing the web. The demand for such activity was and is huge, that is why RockMelt got created and tones of add-ons are available for browsers. Also video conferencing is now available for free and to more than just 2 users like on Skype.

And I like your Chrome extension idea. A land grab in much the same way Facebook's "like" button was.
Comment by Phil Dunn — June 30, 2011 @ 8:58 pm
Agree about killing Skype. The hangouts thing reminds me of turntable.fm which took off like a rocket. Especially when you consider the YouTube button. So much could happen in that space.
Comment by Phil Dunn — June 30, 2011 @ 9:00 pm
Not to be a cynic but your logic is not that convincing. You can say the same thing aboutFacebook because you have to sign in there. Anyone with a Android is auotmatically signed in to google and on my laptop I use google everyday for all types of trivial things. I signed in once and selected the option to keep me signed in and I have never needed to sign in again. If people had a reason to log in I can only imagine how many of them will stay logged(even by coincidence like I did)

Facebook already has similar methods in place: push notifications, notifications, email notifications, SMS notifications… I think people need to calm down from the invite-only-driven hype, and try to evaluate it rationally. Btw, Google Buzz was also heavily integrated in current Google properties – people still didn't use it though.

Skype isn't just about video chats. Facebook's friend lists solves the problem that Circles is "uniquely" solving; people just don't know enough about it. Facebook just needs to tweak the UI a bit and highlight the feature.
You open a web browser and then log into your universal internet ID, and access the internet through THAT
Again, this is exactly what Facebook does/is doing. Universal likes, Facebook comments, Facebook connect, Facebook apps…

You can invite unlimited friends by sharing your posts to non gp users.
Comment by Aaqil Mahmood — July 1, 2011 @ 12:56 am
Guys who are already on gp can invite their friends by following method.
Add non gp users to some circle, then share some post with non g+ users circle with ticking to send them email notifications,
when they receive email notification will see "Learn more about Google+" in the email, by clicking that will take to the plus site shared page with "Join" button above. Only that Join button is allowing to join gp.
Can send unlimited invites by above method but to 25 people at a time.
Often google shows capacity exceeded error message when they try to join, but keep trying you will get in
—
If your friends see capacity etc errors when they try to join, ask them to try again after few minutes or few hours.
Comment by Aaqil Mahmood — July 1, 2011 @ 12:57 am
I agree with your last statement, but it can't be a Google-exclusive thing. We need a true standard social/identity/privacy/content sharing model that allows any social network to communicate with each other. Basically we should be able to choose who holds our data and credentials etc., but it doesn't matter who we choose–heck, you could have an account at each place with identities interlinked so you can use added features of other networks.

I wonder what would be the implication of the new google plus features to upcoming social networking platforms. Facebook among other social media pose hindrance to promising platforms Like Lola Network (www.lolanetwork.com) because people tend to opt on existing and established platform how much more when the dominant browser google join the band wagon.
Comment by Jonathan Guiuo — July 1, 2011 @ 8:32 am
I think Lesley has a point and you guys should think twice before saying it's crappy.
Google does not have 1 billion of subscribed users as far as I know but more something like 200M which is less than FB which means that there are more users logged to facebook than there is on gmail everyday.
I still think Google+ is an awesome product and it will be a big waste if people dont use it. It's so much closer to real life interaction.

Google released an invite session just like they did for wave and others. But seems they have blocked that also now. Just the same old publicity stunt.
Wondering what will happen to plus… guess it will go into the same drain as wave. On top of it, Google's page rank algorithm has ranked Google to be behind Facebook.
Good luck to google. I don't think it can do serious damage to facebook. After all, how can you pluck out an entire society existing in facebook by making something similar??
Another related info. Google seems to have gone down in page rank and is now trailing facebook. What a surprice when google is trying to launch a competition to facebook.

Placing Google+ notifications across all Google sites is way too much, we all use different Google services for work and should not be distracted by tempting, but not important social related notifications.
Until Google fixes this, you could use this simple one line GreaseMonkey script which just hides the notification box on all Google sites except Google Plus – http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/105894

So, is the thing that excites people about G+ the ease of blocking some friends, but not others, from information regarding things like articles read, or events attending? To me, this would be a big turn off, as there have been many events that I have only found out about because of blanket announcements on the facebook profiles of acquaintances, events that I could see NOT being informed of if I'm in a circle for "friends, but not close friends" on G+.
The thing is, what has at times happened is that an acquaintance and I become closer AFTER I attend the event that I personally wasn't invited to, but which "all" were invited to by default of it simply being on their FB profile… It just seems G+ is hoping to lure people in by enabling them to more easily exclusive than FB does in stock form…

Definitely the unified notification box on top right will manage to engage almost everyone on google services But the things can be changed by bloggers too. Right now I have Facebook widget on my blog – Now should i really remove it and use Google plus widget or something. Or should I use both. The total audience will be divided overall on web depending on what bloggers choose to use.

I agree, one of Google+'s major strengths is that people are starving for an escape from Facebook, but there haven't been any attractive or serious alternatives (until now). Google knows this, which is why it is directly targeting Facebook by offering features which deal with some of Facebook users' major grievances; privacy, data sharing, etc.

Maybe the technical amongst us will use google +1 but the rest of the non technical race who took years to sign up to facebook in the first place won't. So it'll just be me on google+1 with all my tech friends and none of the non up to date people. Who needs circles for that
I'm just not sure I want google knowing any more about me than they already do. Do you really want them knowing what you search for, eat, who your friends are and where you go out? I'm sure facebook aren't saints but then they aren't as big as google (yet).
Comment by Josh — July 12, 2011 @ 8:45 pm
The people I know who want to leave facebook don't want to leave it because it's facebook, they want to leave it because it's social networking, addictive, sad and yes does lack privacy but then if you have circles of friends you just don't have privacy in those circles. Another social network isn't going to sway their opinion to join yet another of the same thing. Go out, smell the flowers and see the sun!

FB apps have a lot of time invested into them, by most of the people willing to play them. That offers a serious anchor there, unless developers allow data migration from the FB version to the eventual google+ version.
On top of that, one major turn off that google will continue to have is that, frankly, it’s google.
Their privacy policies already make them an uncomfortable, nearly unavoidable big brother to the world. Many people refuse to allow them any measure of information at all, it’s unforeseeable that such people would willingly migrate to their social platform under any circumstances.
The nightmare of living in a world where google knows all and controls all and we’re merely it’s pawns has been thought of at great length, and, for a time, seemed somewhat far-fetched. However, using the google social network through our google phones with google browsers, all working for a company insistent on knowing everything, is upon us. If it always knows where you are, what you’re doing, who you’re talking to, who your friends are, and when you’re doing it, what’s to stop them from using this information in any way they want?

The Belstaff coat is also re-enforced with doubled material at the shoulder and elbow points. Fot those who prefer to wear this Belstaff Mens Jackets for casual rather than on the bike, removing the protectors couldn’t be simpler–a quick unzip of the pockets and the Belstaff Womens Blouson is as good as one built soley for fashion.Welcome to Buy Belstaff jackets online store.

Funny how there are articles talking about how Google+ is running out of steam already. Just because I use Google for search and mail mean I am going to abandon facebook or start using G+. Personally, I feed the hype from google ain't worth in. Even getting an invite for Google+ is so hard, lot's of folks are frustrated. Once you get an invite, then you find it to be a copy of facebook. Sure there are many features, but these are not something you need on a day-to-day basis as well.
Google will surely get it's piece of the pie, but not the full cake. Finally it would see a decrease in traffic and things would stabilize with more and more folks switching back to facebook.

Yesterday Facebook gave me a reason to leave – they put me on a "time out" stopping me from posting even on my own wall for some crap about spammy irrelevant posts. Those spammy irrelevant posts were me warning the media on FB that FB was suspending people for 15 days accusing everyone from animal rescuers to cancer survivors of spam. So Google+ works for me. I've been on it for a few hours and I LOVE It. I'll spend the next 15 days migrating from Facebook and then Zuckerberg can let the door smack him upside his head on my way out. Wherever you go, you have the notification bar at the top of your window when on Google sites.
That makes it easy to find your stuff instead of bumbling around trying to remember where it is, searching and giving up!
Plus the notifications wherever you are. Thats cool.
Of course, if you don't like it, well there are heaps of ways to get rid of it. You could delete your profile even.
But then you become internet INVISIBLE.. That might suck for only some people, but especially for Business types! …and get Chrome and G+Me as well, available from the Chrome store for FREE.. G+me is here too. .http://goo.gl/Qeurt

I agree Lesley, Google is great but by the time you have logged in checked the few things you really need to do you tend to move on. I can see the value however if you log in, and stay in each day as you work to keep up with what might be happening, but that too is a distraction from actual work. Most sites you have a tool bar somewhere to keep you up to date so why not Google.

I too dislike the whole logical grouping of emails into one coherent conversation that magically floats to the top of my inbox whenever the email conversation has something new to it. I mean, the inbox number maybe goes higher by one but seriously how am I supposed to notice such a slight change with my thousands of unread emails. And there is no voice to indicate when I have new mail so I miss them constantly. Just give me back the scrolling and paging trying to find the email the other person is referring to because that's what I'm used to! And labels are just plain dumb ugghh. If I want emails to fall under multiple categories I just forward them to myself and place the copy in a another folder. You can't put something in a label so it makes no sense.

I didn't like gmail either but the near collapse of yahoo drove me to it. Besides I always had yahoo mail forwarded to gmail on cruise ships b/c it loads so quickly, no frills, etc. If you stick with gmail and use the standard view, you'll find it easier to use. And a folder by any other name is still a folder. The "search mail" feature allows you to find just about anything you want. And gmail managed to suck in my entire mailing list, including groups or whatever yahoo calls them, and my calendar.

This specification defines Cascading Style Sheets, level 2 revision 1 (CSS 2.1). CSS 2.1 is a style sheet language that allows authors and users to attach style (e.g., fonts and spacing) to structured documents (e.g., HTML documents and XML applications). By separating the presentation style of documents from the content of documents, CSS 2.1 simplifies Web authoring and site maintenance.

I love Facebook and I love Google +1. I can use them both. There is no reason for me to compete between them.

Google+ is the new Social Networking Service operated by Google.
Of course Facebook with its 750 Million Users is still the Number one, but it took only 4 weeks for G+ to get over 20 Million Users.
Many People think that Google+ has better features, so only time will tell if Facebook will have a serious Competitor.
So, what do you think? Which one is the better Social Network?

And now that G+ is being strongly integrated into the SERPs even when logged out when searching generic keywords like (cars, wine, SEO) that is another strong point on Google's side.
They are putting G+ pages where Google Adword space would normally be and that is some serious real estate and $ they have moved down to the bottom of the pages.
