I just read an interesting post by Charlie O’Donnell who wonders if someone will build an application that is the Facebook ad network. This is truly an intriguing concept. Imagine if someone developed the Google AdWords alternative for Facebook in which small text ads were voluntarily displayed on people’s profiles in return for cash payment. Theoretically Google could choose to develop such an application if they wanted. By grabbing as much content as possible from an individual’s profile, relatively targeted ads could be displayed. Additionally ads can be targeted based on demographics (age, location, interests, etc). I would imagine that Facebook would immediately block such an application given that it would be in direct competition to their existing advertising system. I have reached out to Facebook for a comment so we will see if I get any response. Do you think this would be banned?

I, for one, don't think they would ban something like this.People have been speculating that all sorts of apps would be banned because they are competing with Facebook. Free Gifts (in all its forms), Polls, etc. All have been allowed to flourish on Facebook.I don't think they'd stop an app from doing this. I think they're taking the mindset of "we should be able to do it better" rather then banning others who try to create a superior product.
