Facebook Kills Off News Feed Story Settings?

In a particularly strange move, it appears that Facebook has killed off what was previously a “News Feed” story settings page. The feature enabled users to pre-select those actions that they made on Facebook which would automatically generate feed stories. For example, if you changed your relationship status, a news story would automatically be generated, stating that your relationship status had changed. It was an emphasis of our original Facebook privacy guide, and it’s behind the “Post-Breakup Facebook Effect” which we wrote about earlier this week.

New Privacy Settings Should Dramatically Increase The Volume Of Content In Facebook’s Public Stream

The most significant implication of the new privacy settings unveiled by Facebook today is that the Facebook stream, will now have substantially more content which developers can access. The result is that Facebook could soon have more stream content than Twitter, who has a tenth of the user base which Facebook has. As Chris Cox stated on today’s privacy call, “everyone is the new default” for status updates and links.

Facebook’s New Privacy Settings Begin Rolling Out Today

Today Facebook will begin the process of rolling out the new privacy settings first announced back in July. Later today, Facebook will hold a press conference to discuss the transition to the new privacy settings which include a “Transition Tool” which will help walk users through the process. Users will be able to migrate their old settings or accept new recommendations from Facebook.

Facebook Surpasses 350 Million Users And Prepares To Roll Out New Privacy Settings

This evening Mark Zuckerberg posted about the company surpassing the 350 million user threshold, less than one month after we reported on the company crossing the 325 million mark. It’s a substantial milestone for the company and at this rate there’s a chance that they could easily surpass 375 million by the end of the year. Regardless of the ongoing growth, more significant changes to the Facebook system lie ahead.

Ceop Chief Challenges Facebook To Debate On Bullying

Days after Facebook announced their support for the Bullyproof campaign, the head of the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre in the U.K., Jim Gamble, is challenging Facebook on their existing child protection policies. While Facebook already has effective reporting mechanisms that have worked in the past, Gamble would (not surprisingly) like for Facebook to implement the Ceop button for protecting children.

New Facebook Privacy Policy Clarifies How Users Can Delete Their Accounts

For a long time now there has been an issue surrounding Facebook users’ ability to permanently delete their accounts. While users were able to remove their information from the site, it wasn’t extremely clear to users how they could delete their accounts. The new clarification is a result of a complaint filed by the Canadian Privacy Commission.
