Disney is making a major foray into social gaming with the purchase of Playdom for up to $763.2 million. The games company, which has titles such as Mobsters, Social City, Sorority Life, Market Street and Bola on Facebook and other social networking sites, claims 42 million active players a month.

Last week at SXSW, John Pleasants, CEO of Playdom, spoke about “The Future Of Social Gaming”, but the greatest takeaway was the current economics of Facebook Games. If you are looking to get into the business or already a player in the space, there were a number of important facts disclosed by Pleasants. Playdom, one of the leading social gaming networks, announced today that they are launching a line of prepaid cards that will soon be available at Target, Walgreens, and 7-11. If you had any doubt that the social gaming space has become a big business, this should make things clear. The cards will now be available at more than 150,000 retail locations and can be used to purchase in-game currency on Mobsters and Sorority Life, two of Playdom’s largest games.
