According to statistics published by Hitwise yesterday, Facebook has become the most searched brand in the United States. This is calculated by Hitwise as all the search terms which “included the root word ‘Facebook’” of which there were 10,673 search terms. While MySpace still has a substantial number of searches, the research suggested that MySpace has continued its historical decline.

When Marshall Kirkpatrick posted the other day that Facebook could become the largest news reader I had an inkling that it already was. Today, new data released from Hitwise confirms my suspicions: Facebook is indeed the largest news reader. While Yahoo!, Google, and MSN, account for the majority of traffic to news sites, Facebook came in fourth. So why would I suggest that Facebook is the largest news reader even though it’s the fourth largest source of news traffic? Read on to find out.

Facebook has seen immense growth ever since it opened up its gates to the general public in 2006. However, 2009 has been a remarkable year for Facebook by all counts. The social network doubled in size in US in the past year alone, according to stats released by comScore.

According to new Hitwise data released today, Facebook has experienced tremendous U.S. based growth over the past year. It’s not surprising, but it has come at the expense of the previous leader of U.S. social networking, MySpace, who’s traffic is down over 50 percent over the past year. Also experiencing tremendous growth is Twitter, who has grown by 1,170 percent over the past 12 months.
