Following a backlash of criticism for a new policy which permits Facebook to share user data without the user’s permission, the company has posted an update clarifying their position and announcing their decision to move forward with the policy change. It’s an awkward situation for the company as no product has officially been revealed and they don’t want to disclose product features to justify their policy change.

Facebook Planning To Give Away Your Data To “Partners”
While you may never have signed up for a specific site, Facebook may begin giving away some of your data without your permission according to a new privacy policy change the company is considering. While it may not be a Beacon fiasco yet, it’s a similar idea. As the company writes, “In the proposed privacy policy, we’ve also explained the possibility of working with some partner websites that we pre-approve to offer a more personalized experience at the moment you visit the site.”

How To Get Banned From Facebook: Sell Your Status Updates
Yesterday morning Facebook announced changes to their Site Governance documents which as a number of people pointed out removed the ability of users to profit from their status updates. More specifically Facebook states that “you will not use your personal profile for your own commercial gain”. While I’m assuming that this is supposed to be straight forward about selling things through your Facebook profile, part of me wonders why Facebook needed to make this explicit statement.
