Over the past 24 hours a new application, sponsored by SAP, has been spreading like wildfire: Friend Network Optimizer. The application tells users how active they are on Facebook in comparison to a segment of their social graph. It’s an interesting tool and it also is spreading by automatically posting feed stories the moment a user installs the application. The technique has effectively helped the application grow to tens of thousands of users overnight.

SmallWorlds, the web-based virtual world platform that launched a well-received product last year, has revealed its Facebook application this week. Given SmallWorlds’ focus on social media integration, it’s not surprising to see SmallWorlds with a Facebook app. It’s designed to push engagement and media-sharing opportunities, which is a core concept for the SmallWorlds virtual environment to begin with.
The SmallWorlds Facebook app mostly consists of an embedded version of your SmallWorlds creation on your Facebook Profile. From there, you can interact within the SmallWorlds virtual realm without leaving Facebook.

Gift Creator is a new application on Facebook that lets you create your own gifting application. It works much like the Quiz Creator applications that gained popularity last year, and there is in fact a quiz creator option within the Gift Creator app. It’s easier to use than the Gift Creator option, and doesn’t require any additional downloads.
The Gift Creator option, however, will require that you install The Facebook Developer App, since you are effectively creating an application that acts almost autonomously within the Facebook platform. You won’t need any programming skills in order to complete the application or the installation. All you need to create a gifting app is a title, a description and an image. Each image you upload represents a single gift. Facebook users can send this gift to their friends.

RealGifts is a fun application that bridges the gap between virtual gifting and real world gifting. A competitor in the current fbFund round, RealGifts lets you send tangible presents to your friends, which are delivered in the mail. The good thing about using such a gifting program through Facebook is that you can send and receive gifts without knowing or revealing your physical address–Facebook already knows this information.
