While Facebook has been in an ongoing battle to weed out the app developers that make “viral applications” just for the sake of being viral, as killing off spammers and hackers, sources in the company tell us that developers can expect growth to return once again. The details of the new program(s) are limited at this point however our source tells us despite changes which killed much of the virality in order to maintain a positive user experience, the company is working on new ways to reward developers.
The company is dedicated to the Platform though and despite wanting developers to invest in ad campaigns to drive users to new applications, it appears that the company is also working on more organic ways of growing application user bases. This new program could include things such as more app-to-user communication channels for creating applications that “add value”.
While the company previously had a “Great Apps” and “Verified Apps” program, which was later killed off, there is the potential for new program that will restore trust among top developers. Another potential way that developers could see an increase in traffic is through a “frequent app users” channel.
In other words, some Facebook users actually want to receive more messages from applications, like FarmVille and other leading applications. Facebook wants to ensure that these users have an effective way to receive communications from applications. At this point the details of such programs are limited, but we should hear more details in the coming months as Facebook looks to support a thriving developer ecosystem.
