SCVNGR Announces Facebook Places Integration

scvngrMobile game company SCVNGR has moved quickly to integrate its service with the Facebook Places platform.

The game, where players check into various places and complete challenges, is now tied fully to Facebook, the company announced. Activity completed on SCVNGR can be tied to physical location and shared with friends on Facebook, while photos from playing SCVNGR can now be streamed in a Facebook user’s location-based activity feed.

SCVNGR seems to be hoping that exposure to the huge Facebook audience will help it grow its user base.

“What Facebook brings to the location-based space is nothing short of phenomenal,” said Seth Priebatsch, who holds the title of SCVNGR’s “chief ninja”.

“It adds huge scale by bringing social location features to more than 500 million people. SCVNGR is leveraging this to distribute our premium social gaming content – people doing fun and interesting challenges at places, building such challenges and earning rewards – directly through the social graph.”

This makes a fair degree of sense. The launch of Facebook Places is mixed news for bigger players such as Foursquare because of the risk that Places could replace other  location services for many users. However, for small applications that are more clearly defined as a game, there is a good chance that Places would complement rather than compete with their existing offering.

Since many social games on the Facebook platform grow their audiences through updates in players’ news streams, it makes sense that a game like SCVNGR could too. As long as Facebook and Places are not competitors with your app, they could be strong promotional partners because of the sheer scale of the potential audience.
