Now QR Codes Can Generate Likes On Facebook

Technology that brings together the real world and the virtual world of Facebook seems to be becoming the next big thing. Last week Facebook launched its location check-in service Places. Yesterday we wrote about a Coca-Cola festival in Israel where teenagers could ‘like’ attractions on Facebook by waving RFID bracelets. And today, we bring you news of real-world ‘liking’ via a QR code and a mobile phone.

QR stands for ‘quick response’ and it’s a type of barcode with an encoded URL. If you have a phone with a camera and internet service you simply take a picture of the QR code and it then connects to the URL in question. It’s used mainly by advertisers, both for outdoor posters and and for print ads, but also for editorial purposes such as The Sun newspaper in Britain.

Mobile marketing company Macanudos, based in Motril near Granada, Spain, has developed a system that will allow users to ‘like’ physical objects – fromĀ a press article or a poster announcing a performance to a restaurant – using a QR code. Right now the only example is a five-metre high bitter orange tree outside Macanudos’ office, which was planted for the 1982 soccer World Cup.

Gabriel Medina, head of Macanudos, said: “Our business idea is about looking for new concepts and applications that serve as a bridge between the physical and digital -known as the” internet of things ” – … using the phone in this process.”

Macanudos is currently working on an advertising product for Bluetooth phones of Facebook users but is not ready to announce details yet.

There’s a lot of buzz in marketing circles about QR codes, as this article in Advertising Age shows. It’s a more practical implementation than RFID chips because it relies on technology that many Facebook users already have – a mobile phone. At the moment it’s not clear to me whether Macanudos will be the only company offering this integration or not. I’ve asked the company to clarify what, if any, patents they hold and will update the story accordingly if I find out more.

  1. Looks interesting. So you can like an object, link, etc, but can you create a "liker" (or fan in the old FB world) with this method?

  2. Wow! The Facebook "LIKE" feature for restaurants would play perfectly into the ScanNap digital cocktail napkin model. Particularly if a restaurant proprietor where to combined his promotional cocktail napkin with the new "Facebook Places" feature. Very powerful! This could really help the many struggling restauranteurs. Great article, thanks!

  4. honestly that qr code is just a link to http://www.facebook.com/plugins/like.php?href=htt...

it's nothing more and nothing less then an egg of columbus, brilliant idea but not so efficient

  5. Clarification: QR codes cannot be read by a mobile phone camera. An app is required.

  6. Brock, the're possibilities to use the Ticket of restaurant to show your friends what you eat and when.. (marketing), but for your product maybe of interest too…

Maurizio…, Yes, is so easy, but it is only the first piece of a puzzle. Think that Columbus, thanks to Egg test, discover America.. ;-) .

Is so easy as wheel…, but you must when use the correct wheel!!.

    Thanks

  7. I agree Maurizio. Nothing more, nothing less than a like link.

    Comment by BoiteaWeb — August 26, 2010 @ 7:31 am

  8. @Maurizio @BoiteaWeb Yes, it is a like link. The story never said otherwise. I happen to think that using QR codes on real-world objects to create a like on Facebook is interesting.

@Andrew It is true that software is required but not necessarily an "app" in the sense that is usually meant. If you have a smart phone, you would download an app to read the QR code. However, any internet-enabled camera phone can read a QR code, not just smart phones. You might have to download software from the web but maybe not as I know phone manufacturers were talking about preloading it.

  9. I think that some of us are looking at this too matter of fact(ly). Sure QR Codes are only links, but the concept is what is interesting. There is no reason why QR Codes cannot evolve into something that connects a user to a brand, service or product. I'm sure there will be a way to "like" an article/add/tangible object experienced offline and connect friends to the same information online. Using the smart phone as the vessel, it is bridging online and offline activity which is where the social world seems to be headed.

  10. …so how do you generate a "like" link in Facebook so I can link it to the QR code?

For instance, I can modify the link posted by Maurizio (thanks!) to my facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/plugins/like.php?href=http://facebook.com/ferbscosmetics), but that only pulls up a link TO like the page, it doesn't actually "like" the page.

I guess just makes it more mobile friendly?? How can I program it to automatically "like" the page by clicking on a link (or scanning a QR code attached to that link)?

  11. This is also a great way to integrate URLs into your print campaigns. We just used QR codes on print material around our campus to get students to take a social media survey. The response wasn't great (not many have the app installed we're assuming) but people have been really impressed with the technology.

  12. Soon ALL SMARTPHONES will have a qr code reader

  13. Another example of integrating QR codes with Facebook is the Check-in Tag concept. Here you check-in to a Place by scanning a QR code and then automatically update your status at Facebook and Twitter. As a thank you for spreading the word you might get a mobile coupon or similar.

  15. Hello everybody.

@Rich Staats Rich, I completely agree with you. I think that what this innovation is based on it's of no matter. The point is that it shows us a little step ahead in the digitalization of user experience.

    I Like it!! ;-)

  20. Hi guys,

I've been working for the past months on a project to generate Social QR codes (http://www.buzzitag.com). It's mainly about performing actions on social networks (Facebook for now) by simply scanning a QR code.

This is a beta, and I need to know if people find it interesting, easy to use, etc. So I was wondering if you could check it out and tell me what you think.

    Best Regards,
    Clem

  22. I like the site, but I seem to have trouble decoing the QR's with my reader (beetag reader). Some codes work ok, others I can't get it to detect. I haven't had problems with the beetag reader on other QR codes before, so I'm wondering it there's something strange about your encoding or the resolution. Might want to test it out with that app, as it's the one that is pretty well promoted in airports around here.
