ALERT: Profile Spy Is Scamming Facebook Users Again

-Error Icon-We’ve previously written about Profile Spy, a fake application which claims to let users view who has viewed their Facebook profile. As we wrote in the past, the application is not legitimate at all. Instead, the creators of this scam attempt to convince users to share the information multiple times on their profile and around Facebook before downloading the application. The users are then asked to complete a number of surveys and register for a mobile service that will charge you $19.99 each month. Do not complete this scam, instead share this article and let your friends know of the scam.

Right now there are hundreds of thousands of users that have tried this scam and it appears to be a wide scale attack. Where is the scam coming from? All of these sites and Facebook Pages are misleading users:

This scam could have already reached millions of users as the size of the scam has continued to increase in reach over the past 72 hours. Beware, this is a complete scam and you will not be able to view who visited your profile. Instead, in the worst case you’ll end up spreading the false information and end up losing your money. Share this article with your friends to keep them safe by clicking the share button above or the like button below. Thanks to AVG for pointing this out. If you see the following message, remember, it’s a scam:

OMG OMG OMG… I can’t believe this actually works! Now you really can see who views your profile!!! WOAH –>

  1. You don't say how to get out of the scam. There is not an unlike button on the page.

  3. This isn't a scam. For it to be a scam, people with brains would need to be involved. Anyone who believed this was legitimate and actually signed up to a 20 dollar subscription is a complete moron who deserves everything they get for being STUPID.

  8. B;ame FB for ALLOWING these idiots to make fake pages in the first damn place. The site engineers are too stupid to put protocols in place to verify user identities. Pages should be restricted to credential providing people. FB can't seem to get that through their skulls. They should have stayed restricted to verified .edu emails, and none of this BS would be happening or in the news.

  11. Can anyone tell me how to get rid of it?

    Comment by Geri L. — August 1, 2010 @ 4:28 pm

  12. Removal: change your password first. (stronger is better)

Go back to the website and click the 'like', your name will disappear from the """you" and XXXXX others like this"". All that "like" does is toggle back and forth..

Check your own profile and remove all posts if it's still there.

  18. Steve – you say this can't be a Scam, because "people with brains need to be involved". Surely that's the point of a Scam? Targeting people who DON'T know any better?

  20. thx for letting us know – BUT, is there a legitimate software offering this service? Look, business network sites offer this already since a few years. So why not Facebook? Would be nice to know who was checking out my profile, wouldn't it?

    Comment by producersfinalword — September 15, 2010 @ 5:03 am

  21. That's one of the mission statements of Facebook, it remains anonymous. If you don't want random people looking at your page, put EVERYTHING on private. All they'll be able to see is your name and user photo. Whooptie doo.

  25. Here’s how to get rid of the application itself and get rid of the page in your likes.
First, to get rid of the application click on Account, then Privacy Settings. On the Page to chose your privacy settings, scroll down to the bottom and click on the link “Edit your settings” for Application and Websites. At the top, for Applications you use, click on edit settings and remove the “sneak n peek” application. You have now removed the application.

Now to remove the link from your likes: Go back to home and click on ‘edit profile.’ Click on “likes and interests” in the column. At the bottom of the page, click on “show other pages” Then you will have the option to remove this page from your likes. Click close and it’s gone for good (we hope)!

  30. At top of page click Account then Privacy Settings, then on that page click the link below "Apps and Websites". This takes you to a page where you will a short list of your apps, and to the right of that you will see a button labeled "Edit settings". Find the applicable application, and click the relevant "Edit Settings" link… then you can remove it.

    Comment by awmigosh — December 31, 2010 @ 11:06 am

  32. if you go to your profile, put your cursor over the x to remove the post and choose the 'report as spam' option.. it'll report it and remove the post and you shouldn't receive any more – don't know how to get out of anything you've paid for though.. my guess is google that individual site and search for a contact number, so you can call and cancel :)

  39. I would never spend a dime on garbage like this. Didn't have to. Someone posted it on my page (or probably auto-posted by the app itself), clicked it, and while I was "waiting for results" I noticed I had suddenly "posted" on many Friends' pages. I closed the tab immediately but it had already worked its magic. So not a question of people being dumb enough to spend money on this…and the "fault" lies 100% with the idiots/morons/losers/spammers/scammers who have such non-lives that they sit around cooking up nuisance apps like this.
