Nick Likes Saturn. Do You Care?

Facebook FansThis afternoon I decided to test out some of the new Facebook Pages. One of those pages was the new <a mce_thref=Saturn Page. As of writing this article, the Saturn Page had a whopping 28 fans! It’s an interactive page offering a slide show and 4 videos that users can view. Honestly, the new page seems surprisingly similar to the previous sponsored groups that Facebook offered.

I added the Saturn to my favorite products but for some reason when I added it there was no news story generated in my news feed. Additionally, all brand Pages that you become a fan of is added to your profile under a small box that displays brands you are a fan of. For those of you that are concerned about privacy, it doesn’t seem as though you’ll have to be with Facebook pages.

After becoming a fan of the Facebook Saturn page I received the following alert: “When you add Saturn, it will display on your profile. Saturn will have no access to your profile information beyond your name and profile picture thumbnail.” So much for detailed demographic data about your fans! It will be interesting so see if any of these pages actually gain traction. If you want to check out other brand pages, here are a few samples:

  1. I think what they mean is that they won't know anything about you, specifically, but Facebook will still give them aggregated numbers, e.g., "54% of your fans are male."

    That sort of thing.

  3. Nick, you keep using the word "demographic," but I don't think you know what it means. Demography is the statistical study of populations. Sheesh. You know, most of the Facebook fear-mongering this past couple of weeks is from people who don't understand what they're talking about. Companies aren't that interested in stalking individuals, they want targetable groups.

  4. What I don't understand is how you know if the Starbucks page, for example, is really made by Starbucks and not by some clown?http://brandeis.facebook.com/profile.php?id=617…..
