Facebook is in the midst of testing out new iterations of the site homepage, and earlier today, Om Malik posted images of the latest iteration. One of the things which immediately stood out to me was the removal of the “Log Out” button, which I’m guessing is not a frequently used link, or simply something the company would like to de-emphasize. The chat link also continues to appear in the lower right hand corner, however the site “toolbar” doesn’t take up the entire footer.
Much of the design is not exactly surprising for anybody who has been following updates to the developer roadmap as updated by Facebook. Also we noticed that there are no skyscraper advertisements on the sidebar, something we’ve heard Facebook is eliminating completely, opting to generate 100 percent of their revenue from their internal ad system. We’re not sure if this happens to be a by chance that there are no skyscraper ads or that the new design will in fact mark the removal of third-party ads on Facebook.

Could you please post higher quality photos of the homepage? its really difficult to see the differences in the current and new designs. Thanks!

Are you discontinuing the Logout button at the top of the homepage? I need it there. Since the last redesign of FB, the login page sometimes checks the little box that says 'keep me signed in' below the email box & the password box. When that little box is checked (which just appears), you stay signed in to FB even after clicking on the X when you leave. My husband & I both have FB accounts. When he closes FB he just clicks on the X in the top right corner but when FB has checked the little 'keep me signed in' box, his account stays open. Then when I click on the FB icon on our desktop to login to go to my account, it opens directly to his homepage instead of going to the login page. I have to click on the Logout button at the top of the page in order to get to the login page so I can login to my account. So please don't do away with the logout button.

honestly i find many of the changes to facebook helpful… though i agree with the first person that there will still be those people who will whine about the changes. as for the new changes, i find that the removal of the logout button will be a reasonable design choice as i have almost never used the button in the first place. i usually just close the tab that facebook is in when i am done. the removal of the ads is something that i think we all have been waiting for.

Hmmmm…. I don't see any friend list filters on the left side. That could be highly upsetting, but I'll deal with it if they're gone. I guess people don't use them like I do?
I really like the redesign of the top bar and the new short cuts though. Does facebook have any sort of keybard shortcut to jump to the search box?
Comment by Eric Godfrey — December 27, 2009 @ 8:40 pm
It's there a way to test the new layout? Or is limited?
Comment by TatoSgr — December 27, 2009 @ 8:42 pm
I like it! It's easy to see and read! Small changes to such wonders!
Thank you Mr. Zuckerberg!

Now if they can also fix the privacy issues… then I may even appreciate this.
Comment by Tobias Schwarz — December 27, 2009 @ 9:18 pm
I don't understand why they can't give us the option of what privacy features we want. They should give people a choice of what they had before or this new shit.
Comment by Isobelle — December 28, 2009 @ 12:21 am
Wouldn't it make more sense to move chat to bottom left in that sidebar?
Comment by Andy — December 28, 2009 @ 3:16 am
If you're still having issues with your privacy it's your fault, not FB.
When is the twitter update coming?
Comment by Facebook User — December 28, 2009 @ 5:16 am
Wait, no notifications?
Comment by Facebook User — December 28, 2009 @ 5:27 am
FACEBOOK Is the new search engine
Comment by McClurg Douglas — December 28, 2009 @ 6:09 am
It looks like notifications are to the left of the search bar in the upper left corner.
Comment by Ally — December 28, 2009 @ 8:19 am
We need logout functionality for multiple FB users on one computer! Don't hide it!
Comment by Donna Downey — December 28, 2009 @ 8:21 am
Ally, I think you're correct. I noticed that after I asked.
Comment by Facebook User — December 28, 2009 @ 8:47 am
nick/linda/donna, the logout button is still there. when you put your mouse over the "account" link at the top right, it will show up along with links for privacy settings, account settings etc.
Comment by Paul — December 28, 2009 @ 9:42 am
facebook is going down
Comment by qwert — December 28, 2009 @ 11:17 am
Please don't take away the logout button. Several people in my household use the same computer and we will have a hard time signing out and in.
Comment by Deborah Escue — December 28, 2009 @ 2:42 pm
cool design
Comment by Roshan Miranda — December 28, 2009 @ 4:55 pm
PLEASE put the birthdays back at the top, and get rid of the dumb suggestions!
Comment by Joe — December 29, 2009 @ 2:42 pm
No it is not a cool design. This is what my page looks like right now and I do not like it. Why do you have to change things all the time? Why must I now have to find how to log out? Why no notice? Where are my different feed options? (other than news and live) I DO NOT LIKE IT AND I WANT MY OLD FACEBOOK BACK. Sure am glad you do not build cars, you'd probably want to try to put the wheels on the roof. How many cars do you think you could sell?
Comment by Brian Ammay — January 1, 2010 @ 7:17 pm
How about the inbox. I don't know I have mail till i click it. And notifications, how about making sure it works before moving it? I check it, see the notification, move to another page ah another notification. Nope it's the same one.
Comment by Brian Ammay — January 1, 2010 @ 7:49 pm
You want me to continue? If not change it back.
Comment by Brian Ammay — January 1, 2010 @ 7:49 pm
i was using the new redesign until it recently reverted back. i love the new redesign. usability is there and in fact very convenient. does anyone know how i can use back the new design? please…
Comment by Rooks — January 3, 2010 @ 11:43 pm
[BRIAN AMMAY]…THANKS SO MUCH FOR YOUR VOICE!…it is shamefully unprofessional and inconsiderate that we weren't given a CHOICE "or" a NOTICE about what was to take place! guess I wouldn't wanna NOTIFY either if I knew I was about to do something "major stupid" that was gonna piss most of my users off.."AND THERE ARE NO WORDS TO DESCRIBE HOW IRRATIONAL IT IS TO GIVE US NO WAY TO LOG OUT"…not everyone lives in a house completely alone…and I care a "great deal" about the privacy of my account! not only does it stink not seeing your new mail automatically anymore,..but WHY ON EARTH..would ANYONE want an account they can't even log out from if their situation called for it?…WE'VE EVEN LOST "THAT" CHOICE!"…how could Facebook be so thoughtless and irresponsible with this serious privacy issue?…what's really sickening is IT'S OBVIOUS OUR OPINION MEANS NOTHING…AND SCREW US IF OUR ACCOUNT IS VIOLATED BY OTHER PERSONS BECAUSE WE "COULDN'T" LOG OUT IN THE FIRST PLACE! WE ARE SO WITH YOU BRIAN…YOU HIT THE NAIL RIGHT THROUGH THE DAMN WALL! changes that seem minute to Facebook,..are a very big deal to it's everyday users! Facebook is about "THE PEOPLE," shouldn't it matter what "WE" want?
Comment by Re — January 4, 2010 @ 4:39 am
I still am not getting any answers. My account is still the same. The help center has answers to questions of which none relate to the problem I am having. Feels like I'm talking to a wall. Every once in a while it switches to the old as I navigate from page to page (4 times since January 1st) but it switches back to this stupid design when I navigate to the next page. I wish more people had the same problem because the power of one equates to nothing here.
Comment by Brian Ammay — January 5, 2010 @ 10:47 am
Rooks I would gladly switch with you in a heartbeat there is NOTHING here that seems any easier. Did you have anything to do with this design? It would make sense because like Facebook it doesn't seem they know how to switch it back either.

It totally sux! Stop testing new crap designs on my account!
Comment by jordan.17 — February 5, 2010 @ 8:56 am
my biggest issue besides the log off button being hidden, is that you can no longer swing between home page and profile page without hitting the back button. In order to return to any page now you have to use the back button. If you have been to several pages, such as profile, then maybe checked to see if you had messages, then went to a friends profile, in order to get back to your home page, you have to click the back button 3,4,5 times. ANNOYING,, why couldnt you leave the home page and profile buttons on the tool bar???? Why did you have to change it all???
Comment by aggrivated — February 5, 2010 @ 1:41 pm
