Movement To Ban Divorce Gains Traction On Facebook

-Ban Divorce T-Shirt-In a statement against California Proposition 8, a Sacramento Web designer has set up a website and Facebook Page to promote the banning of divorce in California. So far the movement has attracted over 13,000 fans and is growing after a day of widespread coverage. For those that are unaware of Proposition 8, it was a ballot proposition and constitutional amendment passed last year to limit marriage to opposite-sex couples.

John Marcotte, who set up the site and Facebook Page, says “Since California has decided to protect traditional marriage, I think it would be hypocritical of us not to sacrifice some of our own rights to protect traditional marriage even more.” The rationale is that if you are going to stick with the “sanctity of marriage”, you should stick with the vow “Til death do us part”.

The movement will be an uphill battle as Marcotte needs to collect 694,354 signatures by March 22. While the odds are stacked against Marcotte, the concept is more of a statement than a genuine attempt to ban marriage. The group has already organized a march which was held in mid-November. Even more challenging for Marcotte is raising enough funding to support the movement.

Currently it is entirely funded by the sale of $12 T-Shirts sold through the 2010 California Marriage Protection Act website. If you are interested in learning more, check out the website and become a fan of the Marriage Protection Act Fan Page. Also be sure to check out the entertaining PSA below. Who knows, maybe a joke can actually spark an entire movement!

  1. The only problem with this "hypocrisy" movement is that gay married couples have gotten divorced too. I personally know of two, in fact.

  2. Just another insane proposal that originates in none other than California.

  3. Im just not sure about this.

although I have been divorced once,I did not want the divorce eventhough he had been having an affair. I was willing to try and work it out and try to forgive . He did not want to. That was 19 yrs ago and he has not changed one bit. I believe he would have cheated again and he was begining to get physicaly abusive. If he would have stayed with me He would have most likely hated me and been more abusive.I remarried 16 yrs ago and I do not intend to ever get a divorce again but I can garantee that on my part or his. My current husband threatens divorce all the time but has yet to do so. He has been physicaly and very verbaly abusive to me repeatedly. I do still love my Husband but I have very little respect for him and it has altered my affection for him. My question to you is what if a woman or man (I guess) is being repeatedly abused physicaly to a point of being hospitalized? Are they subpose to stay there and take it. Maybe even be killed. I am a christian and dont believe in divorce as the bible says (except for adultry) but I would not stay and take that kind of abuse. I guess maybe you could just move out and never get a divorce but, than if you start a sexual relationship with someone else you are commiting adultry. This is a topic that has always bothered me because I canot find anywhere in the bible that reconizes my remarriage. Even though my divorce was for the reason of adultry. From what I understand God reconized my divorce but not my remarriage.

  4. I think this is just about the dumbest thing I have ever heard.

So what you are saying, is that even if someone is in an abusive marriage they can not get a divorce?

You can not tell people what they can and can not do with their lives.

Such as spending all this money on gays being married. If they want to let them. Doesn't matter if it's not in the bible. Do you lives your life via the Bible? Most don't and they always go back to that as an excuse as to why are why not people can or can not do something.

This is horrible that someone would even dream this up.

I agree that people should TRY to stay married, but in some cases it is just NOT possible.

    Keep your day job!

  5. You guys are taking this way too seriously. They're just trying to draw attention to the gay marriage thing. This law proposal is never actually going to do anything besides generate free publicity – in a funny way :)

  6. it makes sense to me. unless you are in harms way you should NOT be able to get a divorce. The bible even states that a women is still MARRIED TO A MAN UNTIL HE DIES..so it doesnt matter if she marry anyone else…..yall are funny. if it fits you its ok…if it doesnt fvck it….smh…thats how a lot of people push their religous views also….lets cherry pick what we like and what we dont like…

  8. Straights are totally willing to sacrifice other people's rights to "protect" marriage. They should sacrifice some of their own, too.

  9. Wait a minute. I live in California. I was born here – and several generations of my family are natives, and I think these people are crazier than Tom Cruise! Some of us have IQs higher than 80.

  10. p.s. to the lovely Shanna:

The bible also says that after the husband dies, the wife must marry again to the eldest son of her dead husband's family. You're right. All of this makes perfect sense.

  11. Honestly, this is biggest step backwards for our society so far concerning marriage rights.

Taking away personal liberties is not "okay" by any means.

But, then apparently California's been on a stupid-binge lately with taking away personal rights in which the government shouldn't even have a say.

I'm so against this I can't even put it into words at the moment. My parents got divorced and it was for the BETTER.

Just because two people are married doesn't mean they should be FORCED by the government to stay married if it isn't right for them.

Religion should have no place in this. There is more to life than doing every little, outdated thing the bible says.

  12. I think that if they ban divorce all together it will have some good effects and some bad.
