Facebook Testing New Likes Box In Profiles

Likes Box IconFacebook is currently testing a new box within profiles that displays all the Pages that a user has liked on the site. While the information was previously available on the “Info” tab within a user’s profile, it appears that this new version will consolidate Likes to the sidebar. Under the current version the likes also show up above friends on the profile sidebar, effectively pushing a user’s friends “below the fold”.

One has to wonder why Facebook chose this positioning as the listing of friends tends to be one of the key features which drive engagement on a social networking site. While it’s a relatively small change, it’s something that could increase engagement across all Facebook Pages. The user who tipped us off about this was not actually happy about the change as he wasn’t able to move where the box was located.

Personally I don’t mind having this information exposed in a different place on my profile, however it doesn’t really seem logical that Facebook would bump the information above the friends. Are our relationships with brands more important than those with our friends?

Thanks to Dave Brown for forwarding us the tip!

  1. Considering Facebook's love for money from Page ads, they certainly think it is.

I'd like it below. In fact I've wanted that for some time now. Shame.

  4. Check it out yo, the "likes" box is below the "friends" box now. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like there is a way to turn it off… sorry.

  6. I think it is stupid. My likes are already shown on my page in several sections (music, activities, television, etc.) So really…what's the point of the box??

  8. The little comment box on the left, below 'edit profile' and above 'information' …why can't I write in it anymore? It's stuck! The little pen symbol has vanished.

  10. I just noticed this now. Between this and a bunch of other changes over the past 5 years, there's a good reason why I rarely get on facebook any more. Maybe I should go start a myspace, but I'm sure it has problems too, probably not as many but who knows. Next thing will probably be facebook having to link to a google account to work like youtube. I seriously hate all of these companies anymore.
