Is the Facebook Marketplace Being Shut Down?

One of my readers sent me a message today notifying me of something funny about the Facebook marketplace: there are no new postings since the middle of June. Whether you are viewing the marketplace or searching for items, the most recent item you can view is from June. I tried posting an item and it worked but unfortunately it doesn’t appear to be viewable in the marketplace.

I’m not sure if this is simply a bug that has gone unnoticed for weeks or if it is instead a test to see if users even notice the downtime. I surely don’t use the marketplace regularly although I’ve posted two items on the site. Do you use the marketplace? Is it also not working properly for you? Do you think it should be shut down?

  1. Pulling the plug on the market place would be a great idea for FB if that is what's going on.

  2. any connection to Facebook 'playing' with the network pages a few weeks ago as marketplace is mostly network based. network features are almost not used anymore unless your in the know and know the url to networks facebook.com/networks (where it very quiet) since facebook removed 1. the Network main link and 2. quick link on profile page to network

  4. I made a post May 20, but the only response I've gotten has been 2 spam emails. I wouldn't miss Marketplace if it is indeed being shut down.

  6. It must be a glitch or something. I went to My Friends' Listing and there are posts as recent as July 2nd. On the other hand I haven't really noticed new posts since I haven't been in school for several weeks.

  9. Looks like an international issue (same problem for France marketplace).I asked FB customer support about it 3 weeks ago, they answered they were aware of it and doing their best to fix it… Who knows what's happening ?!

  13. I used it to get books from students that go to my school. Other than that, not at all. But I think it's still the best way to get books sometimes because you can find out who's selling what then message him/her and set up a meeting spot on campus, saving you from paying shipping. You also know you are getting the right book for your class and you get to network with the buyer/seller a little; some like to tell you about the teacher, tips, what they went through that sort of thing. What's with the removing features online companies are doing nowadays. Twitter shut down some important feature (I think the reply one) a little while ago. Netflix were about to get rid of Profiles. Facebook got rid of Network pages. Shhessh, some people no matter how small still found these features essential.

  15. A bug that has gone unnoticed for weeks? No..not at Facebook. Oh wait.. I've been telling them that they break their own AJAX in Firefox for over a month now. Still, nothing. Likely a bug…
