Ignore Your Friends on Facebook

Earlier today Facebook added a new feature that enables you to block specific friends from sending you application invites. This is a great addition. I have a few friends that keep sending me application invites and it is not the fault of the application provider but instead the fault of the individual. Applications were being penalized for being ignored when in reality it was simply a pesky friend.

It’s great to see that Facebook is consistently updating their feature set to ensure a fair environment for application developers. While there have been missteps that have penalized developers, Facebook has attempted to reconcile with app developers by instituting new features that appear to be somewhat of a compromise. App developers make “reasonable sacrifices” in exchange for a better general user experience on Facebook.

While it could be argued that this constant trend of Facebook making it more challenging for application developers to succeed, there are still applications that have managed to experience continued growth. As we see more high quality applications launch on Facebook we will begin to see more features that focus on filtering through the social graph rather then flat out blocking applications. Thanks to Andrew Cafourek for pointing out this new feature to me.

  1. I love this new feature too. I was delighted to notice it the other day and had cause to use it immediately! :) Some people enjoy using Facebook for more personal reasons and like to "share the love" when they find a fun FB app. I prefer to use Facebook for strategic business networking and simply don't have time to check out all these apps.

  7. I really find it annoying and waste of time every time my friends' invite me to use certain applications in Facebook..good thing Facebook did something about this one..^^ anyways thanks for the great post! it was really helpful.

  12. I may have clicked on ignore all invites from this friend cause I'm not receiving any Farmville Gifts from a friend of mine, and my friend is sending one to me everyday. How can I reverse this, and unblock a friend? Please Help.

  15. I want to undo the ignore all invites from my friend that I accidentally blocked.. How can I again recieve invites from this friend… I meant to block the application that Im not interested in that he kept sending me, but NOT block all invites from him.. I need this fixed now, so I can again keep recieving gifts from him on my farm games, and also continue to recieve future things from him as I have always been able to do until now… I need to undo what I accidentally did ASAP please tell me how!!!!!!!!!!!

  18. I want to undo the ignore all invites from my friend that I accidentally blocked..   25. HELP ME PLEASE HURRY!

    Same as many above, I accidentally clicked ignore game application for one item. Now everything in my notifications lists is ignored! I can't receive a gift or new friends invitations. Please help me.

  26. i tried to unblock the friend i blocked from receiving farmville gifts but it DOES NOT WORK…went to privacy, applications, remove but nothing happens..now what do i do??

  27. if you did ignore all invites from this friend, how do you un-do it to receive invites from the friend? why is it so hard to get an answer and why are so many others having the same issue but not resolved?

  28. same as above- I have blocked an application and a friend and now wish to unblock the friend. I followed directions above and am being told I have not blocked them? I know they are blocked. how do I unblock at this time?

  35. Have accidently put my BEST friend on ignore and the remove function isnt working……now I cannot get her notifications back…..how do I rectify this??

  38. I accidentally pushed "ignore" of a friend and now I cannot get him back. I followed instructions by clicking on account, then privacy settings, then block list and it says I have not added anyone to the block list. How do I get him back? This is very frustrating.

  42. Alan, I'm in exactly the same situation. I was "cleaning out" my notifications for some things that don't exist anymore, and realized only after I had "ignored" 50 requests that I actually "ignored" ALL things from them, including gifts, etc. I also went into my privacy settings and it says I haven't ignored anyone, but I know I must have, because nothing they send to me shows up anymore.

    Does anyone know why or how to resolve this??

  45. I have the same problem as others. I accidentally hit the ignore all invites from this friend but when I follow the outlined steps it does not show any friends as being blocked. Can anyone help? Thanks.

  46. I blocked people from sending me gifts or apps but wanted to remove them from the list so I can recieve apps and gifts. I went to where I need to go but clicking the “remove” button doesn’t work. What can I do? Please if anyone has any way to fix this..e-mail me. I would be so grateful!!

  48. I had accidently clicked the Ignore application setting then couldn't use the "remove" feature and remove the names off my list. I corrected the problem by adding the names again and then click remove on ALL names. I refreshed and the entire friends list was removed. If you are only wanting to remove a few names but not all, just add the names again of those you wanted to remove and click the remove button on only the names you wish to remove and refresh. It worked for me.

  54. as several on this page, I've accidently hit ignored button on a couple of friends, tried to reverse this action nothing seems to work what do I have to do to get my friends back.Can I get this feature off of my request page I do not like it or at least make it wear if we accidently hit it, it can be reversed.

  55. I just did what Vicki Wright did to un-ignore people.
    I had accidently clicked the Ignore application setting then couldn’t use the “remove” feature and remove the names off my list. I corrected the problem by adding the names again and then click remove on ALL names. I refreshed and the entire friends list was removed. If you are only wanting to remove a few names but not all, just add the names again of those you wanted to remove and click the remove button on only the names you wish to remove and refresh. It worked for me. Thanks for the help :)

O.K every one else is having this prom go to account ,privacy settings ,go to unblock friends I have ignored accidently nothing happens going crazy very bleeped bleep what do I do ran 2 antivirus softwares can not unblock friends ,funny yhing is the friends I ignored accidently have posted to wall abt fake zooworld app not sure if this has to do w/app ignore friends,or if this is same virus need to get rid of both I spread the fake zoo to my friends

  60. To undo this in the 2010 update of facebook:

    In the new facebook, go to Account > Privacy Settings and from there scroll down to the bottom where you will see Block lists in the middle. click that. The list at the end blocks all app invites from particular friends.

    I didn't have anyone blocked in my privacy settings. So I tried one of the suggested of putting the name in to block and then to unblock. However it won't let me unblock.

    This is frustrating. Help!!!!

  62. Click on Top News at the top of the news feed page. Scroll down to the bottom of the page to Older Posts. On the right of this is Edit Options. Open this box and click on the 'x' beside the name of your friend. If Edit Options disappears, scroll down to the bottom of the next page. (I found this answer in another area of Help and copied it here — took a while to get an answer!!)
