Facebook Page customization can be a tricky task sometimes, and one of the most annoying features of Pages is the “Boxes” tab. Last week I noticed a few pages that had removed the boxes tab however I hadn’t tried it out on my page yet. Thankfully Facebook got back in touch with me after I reached out to them and let me know how that it’s a really easy task to accomplish. Apparently I just hadn’t clicked on the right things!
Why Remove The Boxes Tab?
Before explaining how to remove the Facebook boxes tab in under 30 seconds, let me first show what the “Boxes” tab is if you didn’t already know. The boxes tab is how most applications originally interacted with Facebook profiles. Facebook profiles got overwhelmed with application boxes following the launch of the Facebook platform. The result was that Facebook redesigned profiles and relegated applications to the “Boxes” tab (as pictured below).
The only problem with this is that it’s not very attractive to have 10 applications on a single tab. Instead, it looks much better to have a landing tab and then some other tab for engaging users. Thus we want to remove the boxes tab!
How To Remove The Boxes Tab
Now that we’ve concluded that the boxes tab should be removed, there only thing you need to do is as follows:
- Go to your boxes tab on your Facebook Page (note: this is does not work for your Facebook profile)
- Next to each box, simply click on the pencil icon in the corner of your box and select “Remove Box”
- Repeat this process for every box
Once you’ve removed every box from your Facebook page “Boxes” tab, the boxes tab will completely disappear. That’s it! For some reason I couldn’t figure it out before but now you know!

I don't have a Boxes Tab on my profile– same procedure works.
Comment by E — September 29, 2009 @ 10:13 am
Box customisation is a very personal and sometimes tricky thing to manage depending on the applications used. Not all apps are equal when it comes to displaying content.
I found news, music and blogs are best suited for the Box tab, all else has been banished for all eternity on my profiles.
Comment by Stew Brennand — September 29, 2009 @ 10:16 am
The only benefit to having the boxes tab is you can use an iframe. This is the only area that supports an iframe.
Comment by mschoony — September 29, 2009 @ 11:27 am
I use the 'Boxes' tab on our Facebook page.. any chance of renaming it to something more useful..?
Comment by Jesse — September 29, 2009 @ 12:20 pm
Really E? Because I tried that on my personal profile and it didn't work, the box tab is still there. But I notice a lot of my non-fb savvy friends do not have it on their profile….
Comment by Veronica Reynolds — September 29, 2009 @ 1:16 pm
Veronica, if you logout and then back in, it should be gone (provided you've removed all the individual boxes). Your non-savvy friends probably never set up anything to go to their "Boxes" tab, so never had one to begin with.
Comment by Ed — September 29, 2009 @ 1:35 pm
Yeah, I was pretty sure I had removed it ages ago. After reading your post today, I went back and saw that I had (inadvertently) added some boxes over the last few months. So I went ahead (following the same instructions here) — removed every application etc from that tab. Once I refreshed, the boxes tab disappeared!
I would guess your non-savvy friends probably never added applications to that tab which is why the tab wasn't created, right?
Comment by E — September 29, 2009 @ 6:29 pm
This isn't true. I have no boxes on my Boxes tab but it's still there. I did this exact same thing awhile ago, and then one day my Boxes tab reappeared even though there's nothing to display.
Comment by Jamie — September 29, 2009 @ 7:10 pm
If it still doesn't disappear, try going to Application Settings > Added to Profile – and remove the apps entirely.
Comment by Lorraine Siew — September 29, 2009 @ 8:38 pm
But Jaime, it is true. I don't have a Boxes Tab after removing (or moving) my apps. I think Lorraine's advice is good– you probably still have those apps still installed on your profile which is why your tab is there.

i can finally remove boxes tab!!!
Comment by winne — October 8, 2009 @ 11:44 pm
All the crap is gone in my boxes tab and I went under account settings and it isn't going away. I log out and it's still there. Oh well, it's not that important to remove it.
Comment by Sarah — October 14, 2009 @ 8:29 pm
I also can't remove the boxes tab from the facebook page tired all solutions suggested and it is important in my opinion as it looks bad having empty tab. I'm wondering how can all other pages like McDonalds Page can do it!
Comment by KP — October 17, 2009 @ 9:22 am
Application Settings —> Show [in dropdown menu] Added to Profile —> This should bring up a list of apps for which tabs and/or boxes have been added. (An app may be set as having a box, even if no apps are visible on the Boxes tab.) You can delete the box setting from this point.
Comment by Dee Gee — November 1, 2009 @ 1:55 am
Yes is worked!
Comment by C — November 5, 2009 @ 3:57 pm
I didn't even need to come on here to delete my boxes application. I honestly removed it completely a long time ago on my own! The problem is I would like it back. I can't post anything on my profile permanently without it!!!! Does anyone know how to get this tab BACK????

If you have a >> tab, click on it. It should show a dropdown list of other tabs, while it is showing this click on the boxes tabe and drag it onto one of the tabs shown in the list. The two tabs will switch places.

Comment by greg — January 26, 2010 @ 6:09 pm
Has your facebook been slow recently? Some one else found this & I have found it on mine, not sure where it's from —- To check your application settings, go to Settings, select "application settings", there you will find the ' show' box, select "added to profile", if you look DOWN in the list you will see on………e in there called "unnamed app" delete it. It's an internal spybot.
I read this and did what it said but it deleted my box tab how can i get it back I really need it
Comment by greg — January 26, 2010 @ 6:11 pm
How do you access the stuff on your boxes page if you dont have a boxes tab? Do you like an empty facebook? I dont get it!
Comment by kay carsley — January 27, 2010 @ 12:31 pm
To C
I have just tried that and it doesnt work! The boxes tab does not stay on the profile page. It is greyed out and stays that way no matter what I do. Thanks a lot to who ever started this crappy rumour about that unknown app being a spybot. But I suppose its my own stupid fault for believing it!
Comment by kay carsley — January 27, 2010 @ 12:35 pm
UPDATE:
It turns out this is a facebook bug, and someone decided to tell people it was malware to get people to delete it. Thus it’s a hoax. What the un named app is, is the “Boxes” tab on your profile. If you removed it here’s how to fix it, so you get it back again:
Go to your profile page, find any box on it
Click on the “pencil” in the upper right-hand corner of the box
Click “move to boxes tab”
The “Boxes” tab will be back with all your goodies in it just like before.
If you want the box you clicked on to get the “Boxes” tab back on your regular profile tab, just reverse the process just for that one box. (Choose “Move to wall tab”)
By the way, the unnamed app will also show again in your application
settings.
Comment by c — January 27, 2010 @ 2:13 pm
Hi c – I tried what you said but I'm unable to restore Boxes to my fan page. I have no recollection of removing it and I never heard of the hoax before I read this page. I'm simply stuck trying to get Boxes back on my fan page. If there is another step-by-step someone knows of, or if this is some kind of glitch or bug please let me know.

I'm with fred and greg. After the big "change" recently, my boxes tab and all that was in it has disappeared. I want it all back and have found no help sending a message to FB. Has anyone figured it out yet. I've noticed that alot of my friends still have theirs. ????

I am one of the admins on a nonprofit group's fan page. Somehow in the boxes tab multiple other fan pages show up.
I've clicked on the pencil and it does not allow me to delete the pages or remove the "box" entirely. Any other ideas?

I figure it out guys:
Here is how to remove the box tab competely.
- Go To Privacy Setting
- Than On The Bottom Left Hand Corner You Will see
Applications and Websites
-click edit your settings
-than click turn OFF your platform application. That will remove your from your friends app. and permanently remove your box tab.
Comment by Y_Jenn — May 31, 2010 @ 11:10 pm
this didnt work for me. I have an empty boxes tab
Comment by billy — June 1, 2010 @ 3:47 pm
Figured out the problem! It seems my, now debunked, Cyanide and Happiness app was invisible. By adding every app i had to my boxes tab, i was then able to see what was working of the C&H app and then remove it. I tehn removed all the other apps and the boxes tab disappeared.
Make sure that your boxes tab isnt housing any problematic apps! I never thought to check this app because it no longer has an add to boxes option anymore and has not for a while, it was just left over from when it did.
i hope this helps

Yeah, You Have To Make Sure All The Applications Are Gone From Your Page First To Remove The Box Tab.

probably wont work for everyone, but this is what i tried after many attempts at the above suggestions.
move all the boxes you have on your wall to the boxes tab.
-to do so, you click on the pencil icon for each box.
then,
move all boxes back to your wall.
-again, click on pencil icon.
boxes tab will disappear on it's own.

I tried all the methods here, and none of them worked for me. However I did remove the boxes tab, and here is how:
1. Under the account tab in the upper right hand corner, I pressed privacy settings.
2. Under privacy settings I pressed the button in the lower left hand corner called "Applications and Websites Edit your settings for using applications, games and websites."
3. Under that tab I pressed "Turn off all platform applications, games and websites."
4. Boxes tab = gone
