Google Now Indexes 620 Million Facebook Groups

620 Million Groups IconLast October we reported that Google was indexing over 52 million Facebook groups. Only three months that number has surged to over 620 million, out of an approximate 1.96 billion pages across all of Facebook. The total number of groups on Facebook is now approximately the same number of pages Google indexes of eBay. So how accurate are these numbers? Pretty rough, but they are decent approximations.

With 620 million groups on Facebook, the average user creates just under 2 Facebook groups. Obviously this is simply the mean and not the median, which would more accurately reflect Facebook Group usage. We would expect a small percentage of Facebook users to make up the majority of group usage. Every user I know is at least a member of one group however, as it’s an integral component of the Facebook experience.

Compare that number with the less than 3 million Facebook pages that are currently on the site and you realize how important Facebook groups are. There are some clear issues with using this approximation as an exact number. The most significant issue is that the query “inurl:facebook.com/group.php” yields results which include spammers who are scraping Facebook.

It’s also somewhat surprising that there are almost as many Facebook groups as there are total YouTube videos (approximately 684 million according to Google). With over 1.96 billion pages on Google, Facebook is now officially larger than Yahoo! and that’s not the only statistic to suggest Facebook is over taking the internet behemoth. It will be interesting to see how this number grows over the coming months!

  1. Hello Nick, may I strongly disagree with what you say?

Each group within Facebook has many sub-urls that match your Google query with "inurl:facebook.com/group.php".

To prove it, take any group and switch to the various tabs at top of page: each of them has its own sub-url that match your query.

So, 1 group appears has many results in your query.

You can't count groups with such a simple Google query.
