Facebook is rapidly becoming a platform for organizing protests around the world, Croatia being the latest country to do so. According to the Canadian Press, “thousands of members of an anti-government Facebook group are set to leave cyberspace and take their protests to the streets” today. The group has over 60,000 members but there is no news yet about whether or not the protests have actually materialized.
Last week I wrote about a Croatian Facebook user who was jailed after creating a group called “I bet I can find 5,000 people that hate the Prime Minister.” The group now has over 15,000 members and the creator of the group was ultimately released. I also read this week that the Prime Minister called for an investigation into the jailing as they were inappropriate.
If all goes as planned the Prime Minister will soon have a much bigger issue on their hands. For a country with less than 600,000 users on Facebook, mobilizing over 10 percent of the Facebook population would be more than impressive feat. The country’s population is less than 5 million so if the protests materialize, this will be a historic event.
According to the Canadian Press, a previous online protest “against Mafia-style murders” attracted a lot of people online but failed to convert. Whether or not the protests today are successful, it’s clear that Facebook continues to be a platform for expressing political dissent and I can only assume that we’ll see more of this type of activity around the world.

The protests have indeed materialized.. The capital's main city square showed a respectable amount of people for a facebook-mounted protest.. I have a couple of amateur shots of the crowd and speakers, if you wish

The protest continues, today there were couple of thousands people protesting all around Zagreb, trying to reach Madam Prime Minister, who, at the same time, was attending an event called Golden Kuna (Kuna is Croatian currency) where "magnificent" Croatian business people were awarded for their "magnificent" work… Talking about living an illusion of grandeur…
Anyway, new protests are scheduled for Wednesday, 6 p.m. local time, hope at least half of the mentioned 60,000 turns up!
