FTC Complaint Being Filed Against Facebook

According to MediaPost, the Electronic Privacy Information Center plans on filing an FTC complaint against Facebook regarding their SocialAds service as well as Facebook Beacon. A number of companies have been hopping on the bandwagon that was started by MoveOn.org just a few days ago.

According to the article, “‘Part of what Facebook is doing is taking from people the value of their endorsements, which traditionally is something that people can be compensated for, and selling it back to their advertisers,’ says EPIC Executive Director Marc Rotenberg.” This issue has already been brought up and questions about its legality have already been published.

Suddenly Facebook has come under fire for their new services that test the limits of user privacy. While this may eventually blow over, I think something has got to give before everything settles down. Most likely, I envision Facebook adding the global opt-out feature that a lot of users have been calling on Facebook to add to their Beacon service. Do you think these new allegations will be heard by the FTC?

  1. Ooooo, yes please – a global opt-out like, er, yesterday! With the eyebrow-raising Facebook publicity of late, Mark would do well to implement such a welcome feature asap.

  6. Hello!!

My account on Facebook has been deactivated because the number of clips I've posted on my profile page was beyond their quota. What I don't understand is once they flagged me with a warning before cutting me off, I've stopped. But, the day after i was cut without warning while I was just sending a thank you email for a friend that have accepted me as a friend.

I don't think they should have cut me. I Obed to their rules once I've received the warning. Something is wrong with their software for it deactivates people account even when they receive a first warning and they obey. That's not fair. I replied to their Warning Email and asked for an explanation and a last chance assuring them that I won't post anymore clips on my profile page (musical clips only) if this is too much of a problem. But, they push the arrogance by not answering back to users as they do most of the time when there's a problem.

Thank you for any help !!!

    Regards,

  12. Hi All. I have been banned from facebook for no reason that Facebook could explain to me. I have been on facebook only since Nov 10 , 2009 and was recently banned. When I asked as to why, the response was to recite a rule and not a reason. This response was not untill over a week later. I have been searching for some way to complain to the proper authority but do not know who the proper authority is, or how to contact them. Can anyone help me? I can be reached at kcgreencorn@live.ca if anyone has some information which may assist me.
