Facebook’s New Permissions Dialog Increases Conversion 7-15%

New Permissions DialogToday, while reminding developers to make the shift to the new Facebook data model by June 30th, Bret Taylor posted an interesting statistics: the new permissions dialog increases new user conversion 7 to 15 percent. The new data model has been available for developer testing for a couple months now, however it will soon be required for all applications. This new model makes it much easier for users as well when installing application.

While it’s not a huge announcement, knowing that the new dialog has such a significant increase in conversions (something that was already expected) is reassuring for any developers who are building on the Platform. For those developers who haven’t yet made the transition to the new data model, it’s time to do so immediately!

Update
Facebook has updated the statistics to say that conversion has been boosted 28 – 41 percent … much greater than the initial 7 to 5 percent.

  2. We actually understated the percentage due to an error: the real increase is 28-41% for applications that request at least one permission.

The blog post has been updated to reflect this.

  6. Conversion could be dramatically improved if the wording were changed to be less ominous/threatening – user feedback in the 35+ demographic (where abandons are highest and there is greatest sensitivity to data privacy) has consistently been that they feel like they're making themselves ripe for identity theft and refuse to Allow. There must be a way to word this so users understand what the app is doing with the data (e.g. making it easier to send gifts to friends, or being able to tell them what other friends are plating the same game so they can hook up, etc.)
