Facebook’s New Permissions Dialog Goes Live On All Applications

-New Permissions Dialog Screenshot-Today Facebook will be formerly announcing the official roll out of the new permissions dialog to all applications. Developers that haven’t made the switch could see their applications fail, if not implemented by July 14th. The new permissions system consolidates all requests to a single dialog box. We’ve covered the shift extensively over the past few weeks as it applies to developers, however all users will see the shift take place later today.

Bret Taylor will have a post going live shortly that articulates the shift to the new permissions as users will see them:

With this new authorization process, when you log into an application with your Facebook account, the application will only be able to access the public parts of your profile by default. To access the private parts of your profile, the application has to explicitly ask for your permission.

While not a major shift, it makes the entire authentication process much more transparent, as well as efficient. As any identity authentication designer knows, having an effective user-interface for the authentication process is necessary for maintaining an effective conversion rate during the user onboarding process. 1. As a developer of a Facebook photo app for the iPad, Flickpad, I can attest to the trials and tribulations of getting rolling with the new permissions model and permissions dialog. It was a little frustrating during the month of June as the Facebook team rolled out the changes and patched bugs but it appears to be pretty solid now and the new permissions flow makes for a much nicer user experience.
