Facebook Glitch Shows Users Attend “Vidyartha College”

-Vidyartha Icon-Did you go to Vidyartha College? There’s a good chance that you’ve never even heard of the college that’s based in Sri Lanka, however numerous Facebook users are reporting that their friends are being affiliated with the school. This isn’t the first time that Facebook has had a glitch like this. Previously, users have been accidentally affiliated with Harvard University even though they never set it.

While I’m sure plenty of people would have liked to attend the school, having a Facebook glitch say that you attended somewhere does not actually mean you went there unfortunately. We’re not sure how many users are reporting the issue, however we’re guessing thousands of people have been effected at a minimum. I’d also expect Facebook to resolve the issue in the next few hours.

While your profile data is not going to disappear as a result of the glitch, just knowing that it’s a glitch is useful information. I’ve reached out to Facebook about the issue, but my guess is that it will be resolved before I receive a response. Issues like this take place on Facebook once in a while, however I’ve never seen an instance of permanent data damage.

Are you seeing this strange “Vidyartha College” glitch from your friends’ profiles? So are your profiles at risk of anything? Not at all! So please enjoy your stay at Vidyartha College, Sri Lanka.

Update
A number of people that are members of our Facebook Page are showing up as being from “Vidyartha College”. Definitely a widespread glitch that could be affecting millions of users. My guess is that this will still be resolved soon.

  5. I love the word 'glitch'; it is such a helpful all-encompassing term that avoids awkward words like….'hack'. Brighten up, chaps!

  6. I've got quite a few friends – who are completely not connected in any way, shape or form – have never even met each other – - and there are more than just a 'few' showing up as belonging to this Vidyartha College….I certainly hope this isn't going to compromise any of my "Friends" pages or the data I've got on my own….any one have any 'results' to share?!

  8. When I visit a friend's profile, Vidyartha isn't listed, but it shows up under their name when I message them. It happens for about half of my friends.

  12. I've also got the Vidyartha college "glitch" – coming up on lots of my friends in my friends list :(

    Comment by Julia Lynch — September 29, 2009 @ 10:56 pm

  13. Must be a virus or bug, a small minority, only about 5% of my friends have it – and of those 25 or so people, they seem to be groups of friends or family members who know each other. So it's not random, it must have something to do with friends, people you leave comments for or something like that. For example, 5 or so were part of the same crowd in high school and 10 or so are members of the same extended family. My guess is it spreads from other users you interact with a lot which would make sense

  15. a lot of my new adds have Vidyartha College as their network – when i was trying to check it out (which brought me here), i had a serious attempt to force me to download something under the guise of a virus scanner… looked nasty… .

  16. The best way of avoiding being targeted by advertisers on facebook is by using the firefox webbrowser and add the adblock plus application.

    Comment by Bert Visscher — September 29, 2009 @ 11:14 pm

  17. I wonder if you yourself have created this glich you are even advertising Vidyartha College in your article. You add a picture and a video about Vidyartha College in your article. How much did they pay you for it?

    Comment by Bert Visscher — September 29, 2009 @ 11:29 pm

  18. To remove it, you just need to post a network for yourself eg Country, School, or Workplace. That will replace this glitch. But don't ask me how to post the network – my teenage daughter set up my FB account!

  27. ha ha ha ha proud to be a VIDYARTHIAN……

    Comment by Die wel — October 3, 2009 @ 1:53 am

  28. The glitch must have affected me too but now it kicked me out of my network and not only that, I can no longer get back into the network (it's a country network) because it doesn't show up! Try entering different cities or countries when you try to change networks, they don't show up! South Africa, Sweden, Boston, MA, New York, NY – all gone? They're only showing schools for most countries/cities.
