Facebook to Launch iTunes Competitor

An extremely reliable anonymous source has informed me about Facebook launching an iTunes competitor within their company. Over the past months Facebook has been searching for a CEO to head up this new subdivision. Facebook has been pursuing agreements with a number of record labels. The target market was supposedly college students but unfortunately details are limited.

One thing is for sure though. If Facbook decides to launch an iTunes competitor the existing music applications on the platform are not going to be happy (unless of course they are granted permission to become a lead generation tool for Facebook). This may be a little late on the timing though if downloadable music is eventually going to become free. Regardless, Facebook has been working on this project for many months now. I heard rumors of this back in March but none had been substantiated.

My most recent informant knows one of the people being interviewed for the position. The only thing under question at this point is how are they going to integrate this properly. Also, is this a tangent to their primary business model? Would you buy music from Facebook?

… really? I mean, really? Third-hand information about an interview leaves technical details as the "only thing under question"?

  6. Sorry, but this makes zero sense to me. This is definitely a tangent and I don't understand how it would integrate with the vision Zuckerburg has painted for Facebook. The music market is right in the middle of big changes, so Facebook would have to really differentiate themselves to pull this off. Otherwise, I'd see little incentive to buy from them.Personally, I hope this rumor is false. Facebook needs to keep focusing on and refining the social utility they've built so well so far.

  48. i dont buy music off itunes, as i dislike apple. but i think if FB had something to add to the music industry, such as integration of selling new up and coming music, and just advertising to the biggest social site that “my new high school band has a few recorded songs you might like” it would be decent. im not 100% sure, but i dont think itunes has anything like that. and most of the sites for up and coming music arent near the size of FB. it would be the best of both worlds. and maybe FB could strike a deal with the record labels that are also providing itunes the music rights to distribute it, they could get most of the music that apple is. i cant count the ammount of times im looking for my favorite album of a smaller (ish) band and they only have one or two.

either way, if they seem decent enough, i would much rather give money to facebook than apple. no offence to anyone who wants to defend apple, ive just had a lot of bad experiences with their products, and customer support, and software.
