Now Official: Facebook Page Tabs To Change On August 23rd

landing-tab-iconFacebook has now set a deadline of August 23 for the new tab width limit of 520 pixels to kick in. This follows our report earlier this week that the change, first announced 10 months ago, would take effect “in the coming weeks”. The current limit is 760 pixels and many page administrators have not revised tab sizes, despite the change being mooted since October last year.

To help page administrators with the transition, Facebook is to provide the ability to preview custom tabs in the new 520-pixel width next week so any necessary changes to layouts can take place before the limits become mandatory. All profile and page tabs will be resized automatically beginning the week of August 23.

Facebook also indicated that the previously announced removal of application boxes and descriptions will happen the same week. The social networking site plans to notify users via messaging in profile boxes and in the Help Center that the “boxes” tab, boxes on profiles and pages, and application info sections will be going away.

The Facebook Developer blog said: “These updates are designed to simplify navigation for users, reduce complexity for developers, and enable us to build the next generation of tools for growing your business with Facebook. We’ll share more of our plans for the roadmap in the coming weeks.”

The Developer Roadmap is in the process of being updated.

  1. are to boxes on fan pages (like FBML boxes) gonna be removed as well??

  2. I think removal of "boxes" tab is a good step. Its useless if you're using FBML and have everything set up in there. Don't think many people even go beyond Wall, Info and Photos on profile.

@Yorai – I don't think FBML will go. Its an important tool for all pages and companies. Facebook earns revenue from all the advanced tools available to all advertisers, FBML tabs being one of them.

  5. Yes – boxes are going too! Static FBML remains & can still be used in tabs.

In some ways this is welcome news for those of us who provide custom landing tabs to clients. It was very difficult to explain why we only wanted to design to 520px when no official date had been set.

If anyone needs any advice on how this could effect your page feel free to contact me.

  6. Facebook "Boxes" will be removed August 23. Will "NOTES" also be removed by Facebook, or will it remain now?

  7. Question is were developers/page admins made aware of the exact size parameters back in October? Cause I don't see that and obviously an issue if they just decided to let the world know a few weeks before the actual launch.

  8. what do they mean by "application info sections" will be going away? I'm not understanding where that even is on a page? If you have FBML pages showing up on the left column of your actual wall page (like newsletter sign up forms and so forth) will these disappear with the upgrade?

  9. So I need clarification….I have a musician page and there are apps on my page for my "discography" and "music player". There are other apps available for schedule, etc. that I do not use. These are apps that FB created, not me, they are just choices I can pick from when I edit my page. Are those considered boxes?? Do I need to move those to their own tab at the top of my page?

  11. I made a custom landing page that fits the width of 520px and it appears fine on my wide screen monitors on Chrome and FireFox but not on IE. It also doesn't fit on any browser on my laptop.

Does anyone have any ideas why?
