HUGE: Facebook Testing New “Subscribe To” User Feature

subscribe-to-icon1Facebook is in the process of testing a new feature which lets you subscribe to all the actions of a specific user. In other words, you can receive notifications anytime a specific user takes an action on Facebook. It also appears to be Facebook’s answer to Twitter’s follow feature. As a Facebook user who has seen the feature explained to us, “By subscribing you don’t miss any updates from people you subscribe to.”

This could also serve as a new engagement opportunity for Pages if Facebook enabled users to subscribe to their activities as well. The result would be a fan count and a “subscriber” count, which is the number of people who are guaranteed to get all of your updates. For the time being it appears to just be a test, however this would definitely change the communications flow within Facebook. It’s also the ultimate stalking tool!

While I’m not quite sure how advanced this feature will be, you could imagine a system in which you get a mobile notification every time one of your friends that you’ve subscribed to makes an update. I think that stalker aspect of the feature could also result in some backlash. Previously, it was chance if a friend’s information was displayed in your feed, however this will remove chance from the process.

As the image below illustrates, you’ll be able to subscribe to the user and then a notification (like the one pictured in the second image) will alert you whenever the person updates their status, posts a photo, or shares a link. However I’m not sure if a notification will also show up if they like things or check in places. We’ve reached out to Facebook for more information about the feature, however we’re not sure if they’ll provide any details as the product is currently in testing.

Update
Facebook gave us the following statement: “This feature is being tested with a small percent of users. It lets people subscribe to friends and pages to receive notifications whenever the person they’ve subscribed to updates their status or posts new content (photos, videos, links, or notes).”

  1. With the live feed (or "most recent" as they call it now) I already do that (not miss anything). I wonder if this means they'll remove it. That would suck, because I can't really understand how "top news" is even remotely useful.

  2. So stupid. That's why Facebook would become like Hi5 and no one will use it anymore.

  3. This feature looks useful if you want to monitor someone very closely. Some people are saying that this feature is stupid but that is not the case… If you think you need it then just get benefit of this feature otherwise nothing is changing in facebook and how it used to work, it’s all OLD and same so nothing to worry about.

  4. Currently, can't you use SMS Notifications to do exactly this same thing? SMS Notifications for users works well when they do a profile update. Don't know if it works when they post to a page or comment on other peoples profiles and posts (if this Subscribe feature does that, that would be a functional improvement). Will be interesting to watch.

    Comment by Stacey Harmon — September 2, 2010 @ 12:41 pm

  5. I would love a feature like this. Right now I am hiding so many people cause I can't get the feed I want. And you don't always get a chance to make it to everyone's page you want to visit. I think it would be great!!!!!

    Comment by George Baker — September 2, 2010 @ 12:45 pm

  6. Actually you can do this already. I have 5,000 friends but I don't want to follow all. I made a friends list called "best buds." That is made up of 50 friends that I want to follow. I click that friend list and get only their updates and activity.

I also have a page for my non-profit. The only advantage I see to it would be knowing who is really reading my updates and who is just a basic fan.

    Comment by Mary C — September 2, 2010 @ 1:53 pm

  7. I tend to want less of this, not more. If I want to find out about what a specific user is doing (someone special to me), I just go to their page more often. I'm not all that interested if most of my friends add a friend, change their pic, comment somewhere, or does whatever???

My personal belief is that one thing that makes FB great is it's stream. I'd love to be able to create new streams (like twitter and Facebook had with with lists), but messing too much with the 'most recent' stream would turn me off big time. It's my favorite feature here.

    Comment by Paul Shively — September 2, 2010 @ 1:53 pm

  8. What am I missing – I've been able to subscribe via SMS to status updates for quite some time. Is this just a movement to the front page?

It's right in the My Account – Mobile section of FB

    Comment by Wayne Schulz — September 2, 2010 @ 1:53 pm

  9. Wayne – that's correct. This has nothing to do with SMS notifications. The notifications appear the same place they do now when for example someone comments on your status.

    Comment by Alison Brandt — September 2, 2010 @ 2:18 pm

  10. Creepy. I do hope there is a feature that will disallow friends from monitoring your every step.

    Comment by Frank — September 2, 2010 @ 3:07 pm

  11. geez will they just get their shit together and leave stuff alone! They keep changing the newsfeed system and it still sucks. I never get posts from people I really should be seeing, then you go to the top (ie. old) news feed and you see all the stuff you "missed" 2 days ago!!! Thanks fb for sending me my newsfeed 2 days LATE! FACEBOOK really must have the most brain dead programmers.

    Comment by Memama — September 2, 2010 @ 3:27 pm

  12. It does seem "stalkerish", but isn't that why we joined Facebook to begin with? Seems like it's moving backwards…from seeing all feeds to having their algorithm choose what we see to now "subscribing" to friends so that we can see all feeds again. When there is someone I'm interested in viewing, I just go to their wall. Simple.

    Comment by Sue Ann Kern — September 2, 2010 @ 4:34 pm

  13. This subcribe option has been available since at least last year in mobile versions of the site, and the existing alerts are via text message.

    Comment by Tim Acheson — September 2, 2010 @ 10:50 pm

  14. dislike this feature, especially if it's enforced and made default feature. Opt out essential!

    Comment by Sardar Mohkim Khan — September 2, 2010 @ 11:48 pm

  15. A stupid feature! An infringement to ones privacy. I have been stalked at Twitter and other social networks and I know how it feels to have a subscription and person watching every step you take. To find out that someone has an sms subcription was horrible. And to findout all third parties giving subscription possibilites too.

(To tell the stalked person to go off line is like telling the raped girl not to wear short shirt and high heels)

Of course you can block such a person but why make it easier to stalk someone? The more effort the stalker has to do – the sooner he/she will give up.

If it comes default value must be opt out.

  25. Great for parents of kids on FB!

    Comment by Charity Hisle — September 3, 2010 @ 8:54 am

  26. I guess it's not too bad. Anyone who 'subscribes' to you will only see what you would allow them to see when you post anyway, and would also be published to news feeds. So from the subscribed point of view, they won't see anything they weren't meant to see. Otherwise you wouldn't post anthing at all.

I'm a privacy advocate but in this instance the feature doesn't share anything that I'm not already posting to the feeds. Anyone excluded from a post wouldn't be notified anyway, subscriber or not. I presume if people are informed of who has subscribed to them as the phone version does, they will at least know who has an unhealthy interest in their activity…

Me, if I want to see how someone is doing I'll go check out their wall, email, text, write, call, or knock on the door. If someone wanted me to know something so urgently, I presume they would call me. Why anyone would want to be notified that someone has posted something to a social network meant for all their friends and not just them so they can go pounce on it is beyond me.

I will simply choose to think of anyone who actually uses it as rather sad, and wish them every success in getting a life.

  27. So tired of people I don't want to associate with bugging me on Facebook because Facebook regularly changes their rules and reveals more of my info to the public. Getting annoying keeping up with their complicate privacy settings.

    Comment by Luciano Passianotto — September 3, 2010 @ 3:03 pm

  31. I do not understand the problem here. You alread get these updates on your wall, this only allows you to recieve them in your inbox. They wont allow someone to subscribe to events that they cant see, as there is such granular control over all of the features on Facebook.

And honestly, if you dont want someone "stalking" you then why the heck do you have them on your friends list? :P

    Comment by Donna — September 3, 2010 @ 3:37 pm

  32. LinkedIn has had this feature for years.

    Comment by JeffL — September 4, 2010 @ 6:38 am

  33. Most people who are on FB are on twitter and if the new subscibe is offered as a voluntary opt in then you have control over whether you want it. I fully understand women

must be more leary of stalkers but making it voluntary is

a good idea. Lets be honest here, if someone can find you on FB they can find you on Twitter, and if you just want to meet people in person then you shouldnt be using the social media sights.

    Comment by Joe Labey — September 4, 2010 @ 9:03 am

  34. This is a little OT, but with one hand FB undermines our privacy, while with the other, it takes action against FB members who behave themselves and comply with the terms of use.

I have 120 friends. There are people in my past whom I prefer are not able to find me on FB at all, so my privacy settings are the most restricted I an make them. Unless someone is a mutual friend, they can't even find me in a search, and even if someone does find me, they usually can't send me a friend request. I have to send a request to them.

The other day I tried to friend a local theater group, and got a message from FB telling me I'm blocked from sending friend requests. They gave some vague rationale about my having sent a lot of requests to "people you don't know" (how the bleep do they know who I do/don't know? I used FB to find friends I lost touch with decades ago). They implied that I'm suspected of harassing people I "don't know" on FB, and of trolling FB in search of strangers to friend. They also ominously suggested that they may "impose additional limitations" on my account in the near future.

The day after I got that notice, I logged on to FB to find I'd received 28 friend requests from total strangers in less than 24 hours. This has never happened to me before. I've been clicking IGNORE to all of them, but a few of them are sending repeated requests. So people who abuse the friend feature have no trouble harassing a member, but a member who is respectful and thoughtful, and complies with the rules, is blocked from requesting friends and is threatened with "limitations." The FB Help Center doesn't respond at all. They're worse than useless.

  35. I have been stalked for month. And I can tell I suffered from every possible symptom you can get. To know that that person could watch every motion you do on Twitter/web instantly on sms in his/hers mobile is really nasty. I only twitter work information but the effect was devastating anyhow.

There is a difference in making people being able to find you and you serve yourself on a silverplate. Or allow facebook to serve yourself on a silverplate. The first thing needs action and some work. The second one can make a person come to event you are going to visit in just a few minutes.

Besides before you are sure you are stalked on the net you do not know WHO it is. Just that someone is stalking you. So how can you block him/her?

A stalker can go very for for getting information. Mine used a stolen identity. I could never have dreamt about that person being a stalker so why should I block her? It took me about two weeks to find out. I could never have dreamt about my colleague being a stalker so why should I block her? If my stalker had lived in my town – I am sure he/she would have used that information.

There must be a default setting for an opt switch disallowing subscriptions.

  36. I've been harsh about Facebook's issues with privacy before, but I really have to say you guys are being unreasonable here.

All this does is create another feed/rss-like function to what you can already see on a user's profile. Think of it like a live, integrated RSS feed of another user's activities on Facebook, BECAUSE THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT IT IS. (Capitals for emphasis.)

This isn't stalking. You can see the exact same information by going to their profile. This just lets you get notified about it in real-time. Any restriction/privacy settings you have set will still (presumably) apply to this.

  38. If you’re already posting your most personal information on the internet for the entire world to see, what does it matter that Facebook has a feature which automatically collates the contents of your attention whoring for easy access by your creepers?

Isn’t it, in a way, less creepy that someone is just receiving your updates in an email because they clicked one button instead of clicking through by hand every online interaction you’ve ever had?

  40. Still no subscribe in Europe where I am, but I don't think I'm going to like it. Why complicate things when there's a perfectly good home page with a feed?

Also, if I want to follow a friend, I will check out their profile. So why subscribe?

    Comment by Ruben — September 7, 2010 @ 2:48 pm

  41. I have quite a few relatives that almost never post. If they do, I miss them in my rapidly changing newsfeed, even with a restricted friend list that only shows the ones I care about most. Plus, right now my friend is in the hospital after a surgery. She is a huge facebook user so I keep checking her page for updates – it would be nice to just have it show up as soon as it's posted. I don't want an SMS feed, just the emails that I get for other notifications. I think this will be a great feature, if it's done properly.

    Comment by Lisa — September 8, 2010 @ 5:31 am

  42. @tom ditmars

"This just lets you get notified about it in real-time"

Timing is important for a stalker. To instead having to to look you up again and again or watch your own feeder to know where your victim is going is pretty tiring. To get a SMS straight to your phone is something compelety different. If you want to stalk physically this must be exactly what you want. You can go straight to that restaurant, that club or shoppingcenter. Do not underestimate this!

And as I said – it might takes a while before you know who the stalker is. You cannot always block. Fake identities are more a rule than an exception in that world.

    Comment by Nice Sea — September 8, 2010 @ 6:02 am

  43. There seem to be a lot of people saying this is a stupid idea but I dont see why, its just taking notifications one step further. I'm making a couple of assumptions here but I assume you can only subscribe to a user if they are already a friend? In which case all of the notifications (status updates, photos added etc) will be available on the persons profile anyway, so what difference does it make if you receive a notification rather than simply looking at the persons profile? It may seem a bit 'stalker' like, but you could get the information anyway by looking at the profile! Seems like a logical step to me.

I think that it would be great if there was an option of stopping "subscribing" to their profiles from the "monitored users" side … this way the "monitored" user has an option to let any one monitor them or not.

  79. You completed a number of good points there. I did a search on the issue and discovered almost all people will have the same opinion along with your blog.

  82. The iPod’s portability naturally caused consumers to take the device on the road. The lack of a way to listen to your tunes on a superior auto speaker system gave birth to another iPod accessory: the 20W FM Transmitter which wirelessly streamed your music to the car’s FM radio. However, soon supporting Apple’s device became as common as powered windows.

  89. However I’m not sure if a notification will also show up if they like things or check in places. We’ve reached out to Facebook for more information about the feature, however we’re not sure if they’ll provide any details as the product is currently in testing.
