According to Kara Swisher, Facebook has hired David Fischer, who will serve as Facebook’s VP of Advertising and Global Operations. Fischer is coming directly from Google where he served in Sheryl Sandberg’s previous position before she left to become the Chief Operating Officer of Facebook.
This new hire is a sign of Facebook’s increasing focus on boosting their brand advertising revenue, something that Google was also focused on. As the company continues to drive its revenue from performance advertising, it’s not surprising to see the company recruit top industry talent to drive advertising efforts moving forward.
After serving at Google since 2002, David Fischer could clearly stand to benefit from Facebook’s rapid growth. With well over 400 million users, Facebook has become an increasing threat to Google, even surpassing the company in traffic on a number of instances. With Facebook now heading towards its fastest revenue growth period, it’s a critical time and having the executive leadership to help the company execute will be important.
Given David Fischer’s tight relationship with Sheryl Sandberg (“He was Sandberg’s top deputy when she ran the core self-serve ad business at Google and took over her job when she left for Facebook two years ago”, according to Kara Swisher), the dynamic duo hope to have a big hit on their hands again. Given that they’re betting on the success of Facebook, there’s no doubt that they have pretty good odds.

Unfortunately, the reality is that while very well liked, David is ineffective and was pushed aside by Nikesh once Sheryl left. He took a sabbatical, and was asked to managed a team 1/100 o4 1/1000 the size compared to his job under Sheryl. Expect Emily White to be next Googler to "defect" — aka be pushed out.
