5 Facebook Scams You Should Protect Yourself From

-Protect Yourself Icon-As Facebook has grown in popularity, it has also become a primary target for hackers and spammers. An increasing number of Facebook users are having their accounts compromised. Each newly compromised account is then used by the hackers and scammers to propagate their scam further. You don’t need to be an idiot to have your account compromised. If you are caught off guard for a second, you may accidentally fall for one of these scams. Learn how to protect yourself in this article.

1. IQ Quiz Ads

-IQ Quiz Ads Screenshot-

While Facebook has spent the past year trying to cut down on the number of misleading advertisements on the site, the fact remains that a small percentage of users still get duped into purchasing services they don’t really want. The IQ Quiz Scam has become ubiquitous on the Facebook Platform, and those users who install applications can expect to see an advertisement for an IQ Quiz Scam at some point. In December we covered one application developer who was using spammy techniques to get new users to install their application and ultimately click on the IQ Quiz advertisements.

As soon as you click on one of the ads, you’ll be brought to a site where you’re asked up to 10 questions which are relatively easy to answer. You will then be prompted to enter your phone number to view the results. Don’t enter your phone number! If you do, you will be charged upwards of $10 a week directly to your phone bill. While most phone companies are willing to refund you for your first purchase, they won’t do it after the first occurrence. That’s because the phone companies generate billions of dollars each year off of these types of transactions.

If you want to protect yourself from IQ quiz scams, do not enter your phone number into any sites outside of Facebook.

2. I’ve Been Robbed! Western Union Me Money!

-Western Union Scam-

You’re browsing around Facebook and suddenly one of your friends IMs you to tell you that they’re stuck in another country, they’ve been robbed, don’t have a wallet, and need money to get out of the country. It’s a horrible situation but what are the odds that they found a computer to log on to in order to instant message you? Even worse, what are the odds that one of your friends who was traveling abroad got robbed and wasn’t able to find anybody to help them out?

I’ve been with people who’ve lost their wallet abroad and needed to get money sent via Western Union, however if the person can get access to Facebook, they probably can access a phone. While you should always help out your friends, you can avoid being duped by international fraudsters by asking your friend to call you in order to wire the money. Unless your friend is in the middle of a jungle in the Congo, they should be able to call you.

Most of the times that this happens, it is a scammer who has stolen your friend’s account and is systematically going through and IMing each of their friends to try and get money wired to them. Don’t fall for it!

3. Facebook Phishing Landing Pages

-Facebook Phishing Screenshot-

One of the most common ways Facebook accounts get compromised is through simple phishing scams. The way it works is that a user’s account is compromised by a hacker and the hacker then uses that account to automatically post links on each of that user’s friends’ walls. Sometimes the system will send messages to the friends such as “Check out this funny video of you!” with a link that redirects to a page with a fake Facebook login page (as pictured above).

It’s pretty straight forward, and it’s easy to avoid, however countless people have fallen for this scam. The easiest way to tell if it’s a scam is by looking at the URL of the page you land on. The best way to protect yourself is, anytime you see a Facebook login page, leave it and go to http://www.facebook.com in your browser. That way you can ensure you are logging in to the correct site.

4. Koobface Worm That Automatically Hijack Your Account

-Koobface Icon-

We’ve written about the Koobface worm on a number of instances, and while Facebook has worked to aggressively prevent the worm, it continues to spread today. The scam is pretty straight forward. In the attack, a user will receive a message from what appears to be one of their friends. The message will say things like “Paris Hilton Tosses Dwarf On The Street; Examiners Caught Downloading Grades From The Internet; Hello; You must see it!!! LOL. My friend catched you on hidden cam; Is it really celebrity? Funny Moments” and many others.

Included in the message will be a link to a page which appears to be a YouTube video. If you click on the video, you will be prompted to “upgrade your Flash player now” and will then be asked to download a file which contains the Koobface worm. If you download and install the file, your computer will automatically log in to Facebook and send similar messages to your friends. The best way to avoid this scam is to avoid all links that are posted on your wall or in your inbox that are out of the ordinary. Also, never download a file after clicking on a link.

To learn more about the Koobface worm, check out the information at the Kapersky Lab.

5. Other Malware Applications And Links

While we’ve attempted to highlight the primary scams, hackers and scammers are constantly evolving their strategies to steal passwords, and take over computers. The best thing to do is always be weary of strange links posted to your profile or inbox as well as avoid downloading any files that you’re prompted to, no matter what. While many of the scams on Facebook are harmless to your computer, its important to protect yourself against any viruses and worms.

Some Facebook applications have used toolbars among other things to make money from their application. Some of these toolbars will significantly damage your computer. The bottom line is this: be on guard any time you see something suspicious. If you do happen to fall for a scam though, make sure to immediately change your password. If you aren’t able to access your account because you were phished and your password was reset, fill out this form.

  14. Is this a scam? I got a message from a woman in my facebook email. She said she is coming through my town and wondered if I could tell her points of interest in the area. She said she found me by searching people who know my town "XXXX", MA. Well I tried it and it is true, you can find me easily linked to my town. That's not my issue though. After writing back to her, even though I sure her picture was not real (looks porn star-ish–but not quite–just over the top sexy)I took another look at her profile. Well She is listed as being a He. What is up with this? I thought it was odd to begin with, and now I find out that it's a man. What possible angle could there be?

I've probably been scammed by one of them- she asked for the money upfront to do a webpage for me- told me she's supporting her dear elderly parents, blah blah- then after she got the payment, she disappeared. From what the fraud squad told me, sounds like the work of the Nigerian ring.

  55. Has anyone heard of Kelly Williams, purporting to have inherited a large sum of money, which can only be released, according to the last will, to her once she is married. She is not asking to get married but evidently her so called Lawyer has discovered a loop hole, which effectly is that the funds may be released to her via a male next of kin. Needless to say, she has no such next of kin and has approached me out of no where to undertake to be her next of kin, in which case if I provide my account details to the Lawyer, along with a number of very legal sounding docunments, which no doubt I will be asked to pay for, he will release a sizeable amount of monies to me. If this is not a scam the human race isn't greedy.

I had a similar thing, I girl messagedme saying that she had met me on a night out in my town over a year ago, asked me questions about myself and the area and said that she was coming to do a naked swim for charity there soon. I looked her up and again it said 'he'. Getting suspicious I blocked her and then received amessage from her saying that my boyfriend had cheated on me with someone she worked with (big coincience since she was not from my area!) I guessd she/he was going to ask for sponsor money or somethng but I think this is totally odd.

  58. I thought I was helping a friend…….but was scammed out of $1000.00 plus $85.00 fees from Western Union. She started to chat with me and told me she was robbed at gun point and everything was stolen but her passport. I was so upset for her it didn't occur to me to ask verifying questions so I wired the money. Within minutes after the 'person' receiving the money I was asked for $640.00 more due to the exchange rate being so low that the initial wired money wasn't enough to pay the hotel bill 'she' had in London. I said no I can't afford it…..but it was already too late. Soon after that I tried to go to her wall and her account was not there – closed. It took me another 6 hours to actually talk to her and found out it was all a scam and I feel for it. I went to file a Police Report the next day and filed a fraud report with Western Union. Don't fall for it people like I did. Ask verifying questions if anyone of your friends is asking you to wire them money. I will no doubt never see my money again and have learned a very painful and discouraging lesson.

Well I got an email from my hotmail account with a facebook certificate award for winning and that I will use that certificate when claiming for the winning fund. I also got an email from someone at Lloyds Pay Dept in London that has a yahoo address wanting me to pay for the DSL or something $850 US dollars for them to send me the Cashier's Check to a person in US that will do the certification. He had also sent me the scanned copy of the Cashier's check with my name on it……So confused that was all they asked nothing about bank details or anything……what do you think is this still a scam?

  66. i got a friend request 2 months ago from someone i didn't know who went to the same school as me. I didn't remember him so rejected it. I was on line tonight and he popped a message up saying hi how are you. Don't actually know how he did this if we weren't friends!! I said i didn't know him and he said he knew that but had just 'added' me. I said why would you do that? and just said do you want me to delete you and so I said yes. I looked at this guys profile while he was messaging me and he looks quite strange and he doesn't have a single friend with own surname which i think is rather odd. ALL his friends were young females. He has now removed his photo and i can't view his friends as i was going to message one of them to ask if they knew him. I suspect he didin't go to my school and all those females don't know him at all. Its worrying me terribly he knows what i look like, what my children look like and the area i live in.

  74. I'm currently talking to a man claiming to be a Colonel with the US airforce. Now mind you the Colonel he claims to be exsists. He says he has a 11 year old son in the UK that lives with a Nanny. We have been chatting for 2 months. So far he has asked for nothing. But I don't believe him. I'm patiently waiting for the snag. I the mean time a few weeks ago I sent a package to the real Colonel and am awaiting a reply. I feel he needs to know this person is out there stealing his ID. And I don't want to scare the crafty person off on the mean time. I want them to get caught. Why don't I think it was him. Well he has boched a few things. Like talking about his friend the 5 star general. There are not any of 5 star generals in the USA and have not been for 50 + years. His FB profile picture is of a different colonel, not the one he claims to be. Wish me luck in getting this person or persons busted.

She did get her money and insists that he is a real and honest person and this is not a scam. She is pressing me to trust her and go for it. I contacted him via FB, he immediately accepted my friend request & sent me an IM telling me I was chosen to win $150,000. was I ready to claim my money? My husband encouraged me to check it out and that it was a scam so i told him we were going to pass. He immediately got off line. His FB says he lives in Maine and works for some electric company as a mechanic. BE WARE PEOPLE!

  119. There is a guy on FB that befriended me, at that time he was very nice and such a gentleman, we messaged each other everyday and we spoke on the phone daily. He ssid he was in the UK, name was Elgin Gonzalez., had a daughter named Mary that was 13yrs. old, mother had passed away and the child lived in Ohio with his mother. He told me was traveling to Nigeria on business and will keep his phone on roaming so we can talk. One morning he called saying he had been robbed of his passport and all his money and wanted to leave that place and come back home to the US. He wanted me to speak to the policeman, soon as this so called policeman started to speak, I knew it to be his own voice, just muffled. Then Elgin got back on the phone and asked if I could send his $2500 and he would pay me back soon as he came to me. I started looking at his photographes and enlarging them to read the photographer's name, while searching..I found the pictures of him to be those of the actor named Kyle Olsen that lives in Austria. I contacted FB and they deleted his pages, but he came right back with more. Another woman he had on his freinds list I remembered her name and contacted her, he was trying the same thing with her. He prays on women and gets them to fall for him. I sent him the link of Kyle Olsen in his messenger saying I know the truth, next thing I know, he was using the name of Kyle Olsen, changed that he lived in Austria. FB has removed him again but he is still out there with another name. He is really a Nigerian and plays his role very well..Beware of any man using Kyle Olsen's picture.
