Facebook Releases New Android Application

After months of complaints from users, Facebook has released the new version of their Facebook for Android application. It’s also most likely one of the reasons that Mark Zuckerberg recently installed the application on his own Android. Included in the new version of the application is an updated homepage which includes the ability to post status updates, view photos and videos, and view notifications. It’s relatively similar to the existing Facebook for iPhone application.

Additional features, as provided to us by a Facebook spokesperson, include:

  • Video playback from the app. Similar to the Facebook for iPhone application, we are using the H.264 baseline profile for encoding videos
  • Support for Events. You can now review your upcoming events, read your event details, and even RSVP – all from the application
  • Respond to friend requests without leaving the application

Those who currently use Facebook on their Android devices will be notified of the update and will be prompted to download it. Below are screenshots of the new application.

  3. I like the notifications on the opening page. Why oh why, when we click on a notification to read it, does it open a web browser? FAIL.

  5. Is it somehow possible to post a message at the wall of my fanpage. I'm the admin of the soccer clubs fanpage and would like to update the fans directly after a match. Is it possible with the new app version?

  7. I'm confused about this update? Every time I go into the app I go straight to the status update screen- I can't seem to navigate to the homescreen above unless I have a notification? Is it supposed to be like this? I can't view my own profile unless I scroll down and find a post I made! Surely this isn;t right- all help appreciated!

  8. Why cant we see notifications on the little icon ? like when you have a text message, e mail or voice mail a little # comes up on the thumbnail indicating you have messages.

also HATE that it opens a web browser when you click on the notification! FIX THIS!

  9. Today I tried it myself ,The only part I found useful is responding to friend’s requests with out leaving the application.

  10. I wish they had included Notifications in the icon bar too – I don't like that you have to check the app to find out whether you have a notification. And yes, I also agree that it should not open in the browser. One step forward, but still a #FAIL

I have the FB app on wildfire, I can open up the notifications but when I try to tap on a single comment it brings up 'http://freegreatapps.com says:' and asks for my email address and wont let me cancel it, I have to return to my phones home page to get it off and start all over again.
