Facebook Redesigns News Feed, Makes Ticker Official

Facebook has redesigned the news feed (again!) and officially launched a ticker in the right-hand side of the screen.

Users have been seeing both of these changes in beta test versions in recent weeks, but today they go live across the site.

While the news feed and ticker at first seem like duplicates of one another, the latter looks like a skinnier version of the former.

The ticker sits on top of the chat feature, and you can move the grey bar separating the two to adjust how much you see of each.

Clicking on anything in the ticker expands it into a fuller-sized version in the space otherwise occupied by the news feed.

The news feed reflects the addition of the recently launched smart friend lists, the subscribe button and the relocated privacy controls on the site; Facebook explains how to use all of them in a new video that we’ve embedded beneath this post.

The feed focuses on the most popular topics among your friends and those you subscribe to; you might see it expand in places where people are commenting, as often as it might scroll down.

The ticker is more current and scrolls down faster than the news feed.

The redesigned news feed also shows larger-sized photos than the previous iteration did, while the ticker consists of only text and links.

Facebook Product Manager Keith Schacht explains that the news feed tries to show you what you want to see — things that have posted since the last time you checked the site, and items from friends pages you prefer over others.

“Through our announcements last week and today we’ve given users a new set of controls so they can tell us what they want to see. You can click on a story and indicate whether you want to see more news from a particular friend. We’ll listen to that feedback and show you that content. This whole set of changes is about not missing important updates,” said Schact in a telephone briefing.

Lest any of us mistake the redesigned news feed and official ticker launch as Facebook giving away the goods before the f8 developers conference this week, Schact said that the company has plenty of other things to announce at the annual event on Thursday.

Of course, users of Facebook will likely grumble about the changed formatting and then decide they like this layout when the next one comes through — that happens every time the site revamps its layouts.

In the mean time, we’ll ask you, dear readers, what you think about the latest version of the news feed and the ticker?

  2. Here we go again! Interesting how Facebook Product Managers always seem to say that the changes are being made in order to show people what they want to see, yet when the general public complains, it's almost always about the new additions and how they don't want to see them. There seems to be a distinct disconnect somewhere.

  19. When was the last time that FB Product Managers even asked the people who use FB what they really wanted? They haven't. I, for one, hate what FB is doing. The olny thing keeping there is Farm Town and Island Paradise. Both games that I love to play. If those games go, I'm either following them or leaving FB altogether because there is now reason to keep me there. Period.

  20. Yet again Facebook changes settings and preempts our privacy. Tonight, I read everything that my friends posted in way of comments on comments on other people's walls.. whom I wasn't even friends with. I also witnessed a friend clicking like on about a dozen items in a row.. Just a couple days ago, I changed the "limit past posts" and it's been undone tonight. I have friends who are women/mothers with children whom are hiding from exes online, and each time there is a new change, they fear for their lives. Instead of trying to make people more open so that you can capitalize on their own personal information, try something new.. Protecting people for a change?

You guys must be seriously bored or maybe you want to complicate things so we leave the site …………… I am not impressed with the new settings ….. that scrolling "big brother" on the right side tells everyone who is on FB and what they are doing? sure, you might be able to turn off the exact game you are playing, but how does that change the fact that they just find another way to let everyone know you're here?! I though that was the promise for being able to turn chat off & on……..you could be private when you wanted, yet still be on here. Now it seems you have but 2 choices…… be on and let everyone know it, or just not be on FB?

I have not heard one good comment, some are going to delete their pages because of the less privacy factor of the new side ticker. This is not a popular move for facebook. They want to know where the recent button is!

  38. This doesn't work for me at all. I use Facebook for work. Over 1000 pages, and 800 friends, I don;t have TIME for this shit for one, and what I look at and who I talk to, or what I'm paying attention to, changes from week to week. This DOES NOT work for me.

    Comment by Jenni McCallum — September 21, 2011 @ 3:15 am

  40. The new system assumes that no one wants to see everything. There is no easy option to ensure that you see all posts. Facebook needs to provide an option to one click subscribe to all posts from everyone. Additionally, I've never used top stories and was always annoyed when the page would display "top news" instead of "most recent." I only want my news feed in a time ordered list. And no, the ticket doesn't cut it. Other than allowing a stalker to be lazy, the ticker is a waste of space as it moves far too quickly and does not contain enough information to quickly scan.

Essentially, this is a huge failure because there is no opt out from facebook attempting to determine what I want to see and limiting what I do see. Facebook thinks they are providing us with greater control over who we interact with, yet they've taken away the basic ability to not have them determine what is valuable information

    Comment by Tony Gerber — September 21, 2011 @ 3:17 am

  41. A social network is all about communication. And when this communication is crippled, it doesn't make much sense anymore.
Top news is completely useless… recent news is what we all want, on the condition that it works. Today the posts in recent news aren't chronologically sorted anymore. I have posts from a few minutes ago mixed between posts of several hours ago…
Imagine standing in a big group… that's you and your facebook friends. If then you want to say something to that group (by posting a new status) you would want all your friends to see that immediately. But in this new feed facebook uses some kind of obscure algoritm that decides who will see your post, and when… I don't call this effective communication…
And in the top news feed I see loads of posts of people I hardly ever communicate with… while my best friends almost never appear there… I think you should go back to work… or give us the option to select the way the news feeds work… by a configuration setting that DOES NOT change every night…

  43. Facebook, you’re not near as smart as you think you are. Your algorithms for deciding what I want to see, who I want to talk to or what I think is important are 99.999% of the time the exact polar opposite of what I want. Everything you do to try to simplify things only complicates things more. Every attempt you make to improve things inevitably ends up in a HUGE step backwards. Take for example the new way Facebook displays pictures when clicked on that now appear initially as a compressed blurry mess reminiscent of the internet circa 1990. Something as simple as a Friend Request is now just a headache of options. The chat, instead of just showing everybody that’s online now is broken up into segments that YOU GUESS I want to talk to, more often than not displaying many that I rarely want to chat with and many that aren’t even online. Do I have the option to just display everyone that IS online? Nope, because as history has taught us Facebook isn’t about viewing or doing things that I want, it’s about Facebook coming up with some ludicrous idea of how things “should” be and than ramming it down it’s users throats. I echo the sentiments of others that have cited that it is this kind of mentality that killed MySpace, a reminder that Facebook should never consider themselves “too big to fail.” You’re not.

  51. I don't care for FB compromising my and others safety and security. I feel it is a huge security issue for others I don't know to be able to view my pictures and status updates if they use the scrollbar. What is the purpose of privacy settings if nothing's private anymore. Imagine how many child molesters out there are enjoying being able to scroll through pictures of people's children. At least give people the option of disabling it. Google+ has a new fan in me and if this option continues, consider me an ex-Facebook user.

    Comment by Butterfly — September 21, 2011 @ 9:20 am

  52. The change is mostly fine, but they should have left us an option for 'most recent' like they had already. I think the biggest complaint isn't that they offer a filter, it's that they don't offer an unfiltered view. There are times each day when I want both. It is such an easy problem to solve.

  62. The only thing I LIKE about the new ticker is that I can comment w/o losing my spot in my News Feed. However… I don't care what Friends are posting on their friends' walls. They are not my friend, I don't care.
Suggestion: This TICKER would work better to replace the NOTIFICATIONS 'tab'. Then when there is an update to something I have commented on or CARE about I will see it and be able to make a comment without leaving my spot on the News Feed.
And regarding the NEWS FEED: First, I am the one who chose my friends and 'subscriptions' therefore I want to see ALL posts from them, not just what you think I want to see. Here is what I'd like to see: I would like to have all the posts since I last signed on showing up in CHRONOLICAL order. I cannot follow posts when they are all mixed up (10 min ago, 17 hours ago, 2min, 6 hours…). Bring me to the LAST post I saw (even if you have me 'mark my place' with a click. Then I can come back RIGHT WHERE LEFT OFF and not have to scroll forever.

  64. "Of course, users of Facebook will likely grumble about the changed formatting and then decide they like this layout when the next one comes through — that happens every time the site revamps its layouts."

This is typical, if faulty, programmer logic. It's not that fb users magically decide they like something. It's that they merely become resigned to it and get used to it. I still prefer the original fb layout without all the bells and whistles.

The ticker is obscenely distracting, constantly drawing your attention to that area of the screen and interrupting whatever you are doing. I may eventually get used to it, but I won't suddenly like it.

Facebook should learn from Friendster's and MySpace's fails. Endusers will only be resigned up to a point and then they will let their fingers to the talking by walking away to a more user friendly site.

  93. The ticker removes any semblance of privacy that ever existed on Facebook. I hate it. I no longer post or "like" anything since I don't want everything I say or do broadcast to the world. This used to be a good service, but it just sucks now. I'm afraid to even send a message on there as they'll probably broadcast the contents of the message in the stupid ticker. Facebook could be great if someone who cared about privacy were to run it.

    Comment by Phyllis — September 21, 2011 @ 3:32 pm

  94. It is a little bit of work to set all the new stuff up but once you do it is a lot easier. As long as nothing changes for a while I am ok with it. I do wish FB would actually announce and explain things BEFORE they launch it rather than calling the launch an announcement and making obscure videos after the fact. Facebook, hire me and I will do all the announcing and explaining for you!!! :)

  97. I HATE IT. Ticker is a big Fail. News Feed is the most important thing on Facebook and they ruined our homepage. Instead of making it more clear and simple (but not making missing important information) they make it more complex, and there is full of junk things on my homepage. What should I watch ?

We want clear, detailed, simple, chronological NEWSFEED, we don't want 3 news feeds (top news, recent activity and ticker). Who invented this ?!

  99. ok sharron, what you do is go to the homepage, go all the way to the left where it says lists, hover over lists, and click more. On the next page, click "Create a List" (I named mine games). Once you create it, on the top right click "manage list". Go down to "Choose Update Types", and from there you can change it to where you only receive game updates. From this list, you can also choose what friends you want to receive updates from. Hope this helps!

    Comment by Shelby — September 21, 2011 @ 5:38 pm

  100. Robin is correct Angie. FB fixed the crack rather quickly, now there is no Fb way around the monster they've created. Further, IF gamers try to use an app 'game feeder' with a news feed as we had before… their neighbors will dump them as 'cheaters'. I'm looking forward to seeing what Google has to offer also!

  104. Isn’t one of the basic principles of business to give consumers what they want, especially if they are existing customers? Did your customers ask for these changes, or based on what research did you make them? Facebook users, I’d like to believe, are generally intelligent people, so we are perfectly able to decide for ourselves what our top stories are and what we want to see. A far more useful change would be to allow people different individual options with regard to what they want to see as their ‘top stories’.

Now, that function has been rendered COMPLETELY useless!
