“Everybody Draw Mohammed Day!” Facebook Page Is Pulled (Updated)

-Arab Protests-A Facebook Page and group which were called “Everybody Draw Mohammed Day!” have been pulled from Facebook following protests, and the eventual banning of Facebook in Pakistan. In turn, a number of Facebook users decided to join new versions of the groups, but I’d expect those to be pulled eventually as well. Administrators of the new groups are claiming “Free Speech”, however the Pakistani government doesn’t seem to view things in such a positive light.

Numerous controversies have sprouted up over the years over drawings of Mohammed, including a Danish cartoonist who sparked backlash in multiple Arab countries after drawing multiple cartoons of Mohammed for a book cover. The debate over whether or not images of Mohammed should be drawn have raged on for years, but when Pakistan banned Facebook due to groups which posted such pictures, the debate was reignited. One group, succeeded at attracting over 100,000 members and more than 11,000 photos of Mohammed.

While Facebook obviously hopes Pakistan will restore access to the site, it’s difficult for the company to constantly monitor groups which post Mohammed cartoons. Facebook most definitely has a team to filter through any offensive photos, however images depicting Mohammed have never been on the ban list. It will be interesting to see if Facebook decides to ban remaining groups and pages (like this one and this one).

For now it appears as though Facebook would prefer to block the groups for the purpose of cultural sensitivity rather than engage in a free speech debate. Do you think Facebook should have pulled such Pages and groups? One interesting note is that Facebook has yet to pull the large Facebook Page which calls for the death of Obama.

Update
Facebook has reached out to us to let us know that they did not removed the group. While we’re not sure why it disappeared, we’d assume the creator of the group decided to pull it. We’ll update when we hear more information.

  1. Facebook didn't pull the Everybody Draw Mohammed page, a hacker took down the creator's computer and took down the page and the blog. I spoke with both the creator yesterday and the hacker today via the same Skype account and posted it on the Jewish Business Magazine at http://jbiz.me/mh

  3. Yet another victory for muslim extremeists. And of vice and virtue I quote this…

Extremism in the Defense of Liberty Is No Vice. Moderation in pursuit of justice is no virtue.

On religious issues there can be little or no compromise. There is no position on which people are so immovable as their religious beliefs. There is no more powerful ally one can claim in a debate than Jesus Christ, or God, or Allah, or whatever one calls this supreme being. But like any powerful weapon, the use of God's name on one's behalf should be used sparingly. The religious factions that are growing throughout our land are not using their religious clout with wisdom. They expect us to kowtow to their intolerance? Since fucking when!?!

  4. FB curtails the free speech of Americans and other freedom-loving people when confronted by Muslims gone crazy over cartoons of Mohammed, but it upholds free speech for the world's Muslim terrorist organizations by happily hosting their pages. Incidentally, late last year, FB took down the Jewish Internet Defense Force page. The JIDF tracks anti-Semitism on the Internet. It's page was long-running, and had a large following. Those are some really weird choices by the folks at Facebook, when it comes to the issue of free speech.

I always fail to understand what good one gets out of hurting sentiments of millions. this stuff is being published in he name of free speech, but i wonder those who gave the world the notion "free speech" never intended that it to be used this way. A right to free speech must be used to protect and improve the rights of people but not to disguise the attempts to hurt the feeling of others.

We can access facebook via proxies etc… but we donot even want to. because our believe is the most Superior then our life. i know i sound like another brain washed or Jihaadi Mind set guy… but i would suggest you to pick up your own scripture from your library which you through that few years back and read it from your open heart and mind. i bet you find this world worst then the hell and start thinking about here after my friend.

Have you even seen the images on the group? They were disgusting.

Facebook does have some policies about hate. Many of the images were hatefully, some called for violence.

You are right, Pakistan is 98.5% Muslim. And the reason is that you have murdered, raped and chased out the 20% Hindu minority in your country.

The tragic thing is that you "Pakistani" Muslims are children descendantsn of Hindus who were forced into Islam.

Tthe Pakis of today are descendants of

Hindu women were raped (as they still are today) by Muslims and then forced to be wifes of Muslims.

    Comment by Viiit — May 21, 2010 @ 9:33 am

  20. In response to people whining about the free speech argument – do you realize that the entire point behind this was that there are people THREATENING TO MURDER OTHER PEOPLE because the dared to draw their "prophet"? Do you understand that that is a BIGGER DEAL than people posting "offensive" pictures on the Internet? Do you understand that companies like Comedy Central are ALLOWING TERRORISTS TO BE TERRORISTS by quaking in their boots and censoring everything? Or, are you too concerned with, "but you're OFFENDING ME!" to see the bigger picture here. No amount of offending Muslims justifies murdering or threatening to murder people. And THAT is the point. We should not have to cower in our corners, afraid that the Muslims are going to be angry. The point of terrorism is to leave its victims in terror, and by allowing extremists like these to dictate what people in ANOTHER COUNTRY can and cannot say about their religion, we're just allowing that to continue.

    Comment by Blaine — May 21, 2010 @ 9:44 am

  21. If Muslims want to punish other Muslims for violating their religious dogma, so be it. But to impose such restrictions on the rest of the non-Muslim world is oppressive, which seems to be the norm for Islam.

If Catholics violate Vatican rules, they can be excommunicated from the church (remember Henry VIII?). So, let Muslims deal with other Muslims in the same manner and leave non-Muslims alone. The rest of the world should not have an extreme religious group dictate how we live.

Freedom of speech is a basic right in a free society and it will not be squelched by these terrorists.

    Comment by Roger Luedecke — May 21, 2010 @ 10:56 am

  27. Maybe a true Muslim can explain some things to me from the Quran?

Sura 9:29,30…commands all Muslims to, "FIGHT AGAINST (ALL Non-Muslims) THOSE WHO DO NOT BELIEVE IN ALLAH…THOSE WHO DO NOT ACKNOWLEDGE the religion of Truth (ISLAM), EVEN IF THEY ARE CHRISTIANS AND JEWS, until EVERY NON-MUSLIM willingly pays a heavy tax, and feel themselves SUBDUGATED/SUBDUED…Allah's CURSE be upon the Christians and Jews."

There are scores of these types of verses!

The authentic Hadeeth command violence as well! Bukhari Vol 1, Bk 8, 387 quotes Mohammad as saying, "I have been ordered to fight against ALL Non-Muslims until till they say: 'None has the right to be worshipped but Allah.'- they become Muslims. And IF they become Muslims, pray like our prayers, face Mecca and slaughter as we slaughter, then their blood and property will be safe"

Why do we project our values of religious freedom, sexual equality on to Muslims and stupidly believe that they believe as we do? They do not. They state repeatedly that they do not believe as we do.

    Take them at their word.

In case there is any further question about this "religion of peace"?

As of May 21/2010…there have been 15,325 terror attacks by Muslims…SINCE Sep 11/2001!! (thereligionofpeace.com)

There may be evil, insane people from any religion that go against the teachings of the faith and kill the innocent…but in Islam it is mandated! Show me any religion anywhere in the world that is killing people like Islam is! They aren't going against their faith…they are following it!

  36. Announcing Show Mohammed Day June 3rd: Rallys in Celebration of Freedom of Speech & Religion.

I hadn't expected much to come of the Everybody Draw Mohammed Day event once the instigator

canceled it and there was no organized effort for rallys in support of it. Little did I know there were so many in favor of censorship

that would arise and capture the day instead. I'd planned to to announce the new event yesterday on the wall of the

Everybody Draw Mohammed day facebook page.. only to discover when I was ready that it had disappeared. I thought it would be back

today but since it isn't I need to find other ways to get the word out to suggest people being organizing real world rally's in support

of freedom of speech and religion. I was hoping you might consider helping announce and spread the word about the group.

    The facebook page is at
    http://www.facebook.com/pages/Show-Mohammed-Day/1...

and a backup of the welcome page is at
    http://www.showmohammed.com/

Unfortunately with the Everybody Draws Mohammed facebook page and its > 100,000 people following it perhaps having been censored.. I seem

to be suddenly starting from scratch to find sources to spread the word.

    thanks.

  37. Ivan, you are so naive. Its good that at least you did peep into the hole to Islam but so unfortunate that you didn't see and realize the whole perspective. By just taking a partial, not even the whole sentence of Koran and make a conclusion is a very bad judgement.

How about open your mind and see Islam in a whole perspective? Not by media's provocation and so on. Go and search for the truth, may you find what you seek. Islam is a religion of peace and harmony. It's normal people be angry when you threaten something that they love.

Example, someone mock your parents. If you don't feel anything meaning something is very very wrong with you.

We like to pat ourselves on the back and proclaim our humanity yet as a species we will do anything to avoid conflict, and in many cases to our despair. If Islam is such an ancient and piowerful creed then why be afraid of dissent? It highlights the farce that is sold to muslim, christian , jew, buddhist, taoist etc etc. A fucking pipe dream concocted by men to control their fellow man. In the description, I named Muhammed as being present on the sculpture, and although you can see the thumbnail, when you click the image it will not load – not for me or anyone else.

Yes people "MUSLIMS" leaders from Denmark used "FAKE" drawings, claiming that they were publicized in the papers, while in fact they were not. Again, Muslim lied to their fellow Muslims.

So one billion people are fed up because others draw their prophet? Hey what about the other billions of people who don't want your islamic crap forced down our throats? If the Catholic Pope would tell Muslim that have to partake in the communion every Friday night, how many of them, would comply? Yet Muslims want that their intolerant religion should be respected? Only pedophile men could embrace a religion that allows underage girls to be married. Why did Mohammed (prophet of his own delusion allah) marry a 6 year old? Just a guess, NO OTHER MAN would allow his adult daughter to be married to this scumbag, a guy who himself killed 400 people in the wars he led. If he was only a military leader but as founder of a “religion”?

Muslim claim that they “respect” Jesus, so then why is it, that the followers of Jesus being killed by the “religion of peace?

If you slander a live person using the "Free Speech" argument, there are laws to protect the victim so watch out… HOWEVER if you use "Free Speech" to criticize an idea, that should be unqualified. If the pusillanimous of the press (and some commentators) insist that this or that religion should not be criticized does that also mean that Nazis and Socialists and others of that ilk should not be scorned? COME ON, the bloody Desert Death Cult has a stranglehold on the UN and already changed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to exempt themselves from scrutiny. The line has to be drawn somewhere or we will all be saying prayers to the god that the mass murdering paedophile invented, 5 times a day. 59. it is quite a simple theory and you guys are just not ready to accept it. your freedom of speech is offending some one, so what would you chose? that offense or your freedom? it is simply a matter of manners, if one does not like to be called with one name and you keep on calling him on the name of freedom of speech, is it right? if one says anything nasty on your face about your family on the name of freedom of speech, will it be ok with you?

depiction of Prophet Muhammad(P.B.U.H) is not allowed religiously, it is a sin for us and you people want to carry it on, on the name of freedom of speech and want us to keep quite? i think you people need a psychiatrist.

and even after you people know what sort of dirty caricatures have been drawn their, no one of you ready to condemn and want us to tolerate. you keep on offending us and one of us hacks the M.f…..s computer and you ultimately get aware of it is a crime to steel things but never ready to learn that it is a even bigger crime of provoking some one on the name of freedom and interfering in a religious matter on the name of freedom of speech. you people are sick…………

  62. I don't understand why people are stupid enough to join something like Draw Mohammad Day. The only thing you people are going to achieve by joining this group is fuel the radical Islamists recruits. Pakistan a country known for radical Islamists is fighting hard to defeat them and has almost achieved this task since their army only has to attack one more area(north Waziristan) to get rid of them once and for all. During this operation Pakistani officials have caught Indian agents that were probably sent by India to fund the terrorist activities in Pakistan since Pakistan and India are known to be enemies for the stupidest of resons. Other than Indians there seems to be a large number of Arab and Uzbik militants in Pakistan since quite a few of them have been identified after being exterminated in battle. You people should not help the radical islamists to win their battle because all these images of their prophet will end up being shown to a bunch of uneducated 14-18 year olds and everyone knows teens are easy to influence causing radical islamists to gain new recruits that are willing to do anything for their radical leaders. Another thing you people should understand is that in Islam drawing prophet Mohammad or any other prophet (Jesus, Abraham, etc.) is not allowed whereas in Christianity we are allowed to draw our prophets. To sum it all up we should stop trying to hurt a group of 1.5 million people and for once think rationally about the consiquences of our decisons.

Yes, I know my writing skills are no good =( but I just wanted to express my point of view on this issue.

  66. I am a big fan of facebook and I am a Muslim. I want it back; my facebook account; Our govt is selfish; it is because of the other reasons that it's blocked facebook. Facebook is full of Jews and so is this world. We shan't have banned facebook. What's there on facebook can also be seen on google; It's no biggie. It's nothing to do with the medium. It's an individual's psyche. THE COMPANY plays with it; plays with each one of us. I WANT MY FACEBOOK BACK. TELL ME THE PROXIES OR WHATEVER IT IS THAT YOU HAVE. I have firm belief in God and I wasn't part of that group. I don't care what goes on facebook. If it's against my beliefs I will report it and I did do it in case of the 20th May incident; I don't support you on banning the thing. This way Muslims will only lose contact; they won't earn, learn and get in touch with the rest of the people. This is BS.

  67. I have to say that I agree with a ban on drawing the Muslim's Prophet because it is offensive on a deep level. People who do it knowing that this is offensive are probably extremist, racist, or just ignorant. How many "European Americans" will call an "African American" a nigger to their face? Very few. They rather hide behind doors and anonymous posts. Free speech is a great thing, but this is hate speech and I thought we had some protection from this. The same goes for Muslims, if they are going to threaten to kill someone because someone offends them they should be banned too. Damn, if you don't like another group of people keep it to your self. What does it solve to air your ignorance. If we would stop associating all Muslims as terrorists we probably wouldn't have so many stupid people lashing out against a religion. We would have more people railing against the stupid people that use violence as a means of communication because they feel they have no other voice to express their dislike of their situation. I blame the media for the Muslim-Terrorist association, the Republicans for feeding the flame in their march to war with Iraq, and most of all the weak, cowardly people who perpetrate terrorism and acts of violence in the name of a religion that does not condone such acts (although they will twist sacred text to feed their purpose). We can no more label all Muslims terrorist than we can all Christians terrorist (ref. abortion clinic bombings and shootings). OK, I have said too much, probably talking to no one because this post is already old.

It seems that there exists some MENTALLY RETARDED PERSONALITIES on this GOD created UNIVERSE who write ill about PROPHETS AND RELIGIONS as well.

I feel it would be more appropriate if one could fine out the source or link it came from rather than pulling up FACEBOOK for it.

Facebook has not printed this. Facebook and many other sites are not the "Pay-off" sites where the site first reads your material, confirms its genuineness and then pay you for your write-ups.

It is just a site where people of different nations, religion, caste can meet, share experiences and much more.

It involves in some game sites which helps the down-trodden to rise and much more………

Supposing you were to receive an email on the very same subject or something worse – What would you? Sue the email organization, shut down your email id. I think you would wisely report or ensure blockage of such a character who circulates.

If you want JUSTICE or wish to do justice, then do it wisely and ensure that you do not do injustice to the ignorant and the innocent ones.

I dont want to engage into any arguments, Just want to say that such pics are not new on web, there are already hundred of sites containing such pics, with extreme insulting depictions, but we never saw such reaction on those pics. WHY now? Why so if they are hosted at facebook???

    .

    .

Because Facebook don’t operates as some private website, or is for some particular group. It poses it self as a social networking solution for people from all over world, who ofc have different set of values. It is responsibility of Facebook administration to handle this situation so that none of its valued member gets hurt anyway. coz thats not have people signed up for!! If they want to operate as international site then they ll have to come out of american mind frame, give importance to other cultures n values too.. coz americanwestern values are not the only one that exist in world. they ll have to take tough steps, or ATLEAST act by their own rules and regulations in current case which dont allow existance of hate content (page admin himself admitted that many of pics being posted are extremly extremly insulting) on their website. Are u upto it fb admins ?? or you want us to move to other alternatives!!

  81. I am A Muslim, Kill Me And Call It Colleteral Damage, Imprison me and call it security measure, exile my people en messe and call it New Middle East, rob my resources, invade my land, Alter my Leadership & call it, Democracy.

A Jew can grow his beard in order to practice his faith

But when Muslim does the same, he is an extremist and terrorist!

A nun can be covered from head to toe in order to devote herself to God, right?

But, then, if a daughter of Muslim-Ummah does the same, why is she oppressed?

When a western woman stays at home to look after her house and kids she is respected by the entire society because of sacrificing her life to her house

But when a Muslim woman does so by her will, they say, “she needs to be liberated”!

Any girl can go to university wearing what she wills and have her rights and freedom?

But when a Muslim Girl/Lady wears Hijab(cover), they prevent her from entering the university!

When a child dedicates himself to a subject, he has potential and talent..

But when he dedicates himself to Islam he is hopeless!

When a Jew kills someone, religion is not mentioned, but when a Muslim is charged with a crime, it is Islam that goes to trial!

When someone sacrfices himself to keep others alive, he is noble and everyone respects him.

But when a Palestinian does that to save his son from being killed, his brother’s arm being broken, his mother being raped, his home being destroyed, and his mosque being violated — He gets the title of ‘terrorist’! Why? Because he is a “Muslim”!

When there is trouble, we accept any solution available, right? However, if the solution lies in Islam, we refuse to take a look at it.

When someone drives a perfect car in an improper manner, no one blames the car….

But when any Muslim makes a mistake or treats people in a bad manner – people say “Islam is the reason”!

We must eradicate islam now before it’s to late. There is no moderate islam! Islam is a failed religion from the start, based on the teachings of a pedophile. There is no debating this. A pedophile is a pedophile. All signs of islam must be removed from the world.

When someone talk against anyone’s religion or play with others feelings it is a comment or freedom of speech but if a muslim does same thing then it is a terrorism.

We Love Our Prophet MUHAMMAD(PBUH) Even More Than Our Lives. We Will Sacrifice Our Lives For Our Prophet(PBUH).

Fellow humans there are good ppl and bad ppl in all the religions aren’t Jews and Christian killing, stealing and robbing as well?

No one with even a minimum Intelligence would blame a whole race for what one of them does, do you blame Germans for what Hitler did??

I think all of you are more intelligent than I am, You can understand the fact that the actions you associate with Muslims may be by someone who wants to defame Islam or even a Muslim who is doesn’t even know what Islam is and his religion is just to kill, steal and rob. I hope you get the point.

I didn’t make any hateful comment in any blog against the ppl celebrating the ” draw Muhammad day” and in my view neither The Prophet Muhammad himself would have said anything about it ( the one who forgave Taifians who threw stones on him and the lady throwing trash on him). Our prime concern should be to make people understand us and our religion , after that the whole misunderstanding would vanish. It is of no use using bad language and calling names to others. Understand the critical situation and act accordingly, the are humans who got astray from the true path and we should help them instead of getting angry and let them die in the dark. WE are Muslims and we love and care for humanity. Islam says A person who kills a human is like the one who killed the whole humanity. I hope I did a little to help you understand to unerstand Islam you need to read Quran try http://www.quran4u.com/ or search for Quran in you native language and then reply to me what you think of my text? All I know is that I want NOTHING to do with it and I'll jump on every, and any opportunity to stand up to anyone who tries to silence my free speech. Messages of anger, of hatred and frustration, were being thrown around on any of the pages devoted to either drawing Muhammed, or against it . . . funny thing is, the 'Against Draw Muhammed Day', although just as reprehensible and vile comments and drawings or pics were submitted, is still up.

Religion is basically a curse on this world, given to us by megalomaniacs like Constantine (and the Papacy that followed) or Muhammed that made up rules as they went along to suit their needs, or to rule their empires under the guise of some divine purpose that did little more than dupe the fools under them into believing that their power was more than it really was.

Now, we have three Abrahamic faiths all fighting for the same square mile of turf in Jerusalem, each of them convinced that they are going to be the top dogs at Judgement Day, and each seem to think we are all hurtling head-long into that glorious day in our life-time . . . while the rest of humanity that isn't stupid enough to follow the words of some self-absorbed, self-professed prophet (regardless of whether or not it's Moses, Paul, Muhammed, Joseph Smith, or Hubbard) tries to look forward to, and work towards, a future that doesn't end with a heaven where masturbation is probably about as necessary as an out-patient's waiting room in a lobotomy clinic.

Some people do not have any respect but ridicule others religion, color, cultures for their own reasons and in the end for their own loss.

  105. Are you saying that rights are based on whether or not someone's feelings are hurt? Freedom of speech is not there to "to protect or improve the rights of others", it's there to protect speech regardless of whether you like it, or if it hurts your feelings. I hate to be the one to break this to you, but you dont have a right to not have your feelings hurt and neither does anyone else. The notion of freedom of speech was introduced to America in our founding documents, if you think for one minute they would've objected to this facebook page, you might want to pick up a history book. They were more likely to have agreed with it.

  106. Hey, jackass. Put the fucking update at the BEGINNING. Most people read the headline and the first sentence or two. They will most likely not even notice your update.

And if you "assume that the creator pulled it," then UPDATE your erroneous title, you fucking moron.
