Signs Point To Launch Of Facebook Profile Fans Feature

There’s a new feature within the email notifications area of Facebook which enables users to receive an email every time somebody “Connects to me as a fan”. We first heard about this new feature last night and were able to confirm it this morning. Just yesterday we wrote about how Facebook Pages have become your friends, which is another step in the merging of profiles and Pages. The combination of profile fans and the new granular publisher controls will help complete the twitterfication of Facebook.

Facebook has been in an all out war with Twitter for the past few months, with the most significant change being the opening of the feed so that no information is filtered. Hopefully Facebook can begin focusing on new things once the duplication of Twitter’s features is complete. It has taken a relatively long time and during the entire process Twitter has continued to experience rapid growth.

With the recent events in Iran, Twitter became the center of attention, making Facebook even more bitter. Over the past two weeks we have seen feature after feature released though, making it appear as though Facebook has become more serious about their ongoing battle with the microblogging platform. Each new feature has resulted in confusion for many users but hopefully the rollout of new features will begin to decrease once the current phase is complete.

Do you think Facebook’s decision to build in all of Twitter’s features is a good one? Have you become confused by all the new settings?

  1. So does this mean that when a person becomes a fan of a page that I admin, I will receive an email notification? If so that would be awesome!

  2. My concern is all these fans that are waiting to become friend of my profile and that I asked to go to my public page. What I’m I supposed to tell them now?

  3. I LOVE this new feature — saw it in my notifications the other day… only it’s now disappeared. Bummer. Guess Facebook were testing for a bit but not fully rolled out. This will be an awesome way to track when fans sign up and offer prize drawings for the x fan that signs up!! hehee

  4. Sounds like a great feature. It will increase potential for engagement with fans. I'd love to be able to contact new fans when they join – welcoming them to the page. Let's hope Facebook provide it soon.
