Facebook’s Photos Promotions Become Sitewide

Facebook is actively testing a number of promotional photos features, including “Photo Memories” and “Recommended Photos”. The new features, which were previously suspected to be integrated with Facebook Places, simply appear to be a way to get users on the site to engage with photos more often. That’s most likely because the Photos application is the most “sticky” application on the site.

While it would make sense for Facebook to integrate photos and videos into a Place, as first pointed out by Mashable, it’s not clear that this is how the integration is functioning. Instead, the promtions are aslo showing up within events. The only question now is whether or not Facebook is hoping to extend the functionality of Facebook events and places, or if they are simply promoting the photos application.

Given that many mobile Facebook users leverage the camera on their mobile device to upload photos, it’s only natural that users would be prompted to snap a picture right after they check-in to a venue or an event. While there are a number of location-based startups that are offering similar functionality, Facebook has the largest photos service on the web, and integration with Places and events would no doubt create a killer combination.

For the time being, we’ll be left to imagine how this integration will function, but it’s pretty clear that numerous people are seeing this new “Photo Memories” feature. The only question that remains is whether this is specific to Places and Events or a site-wide feature. Have you seen either of these photos promotions show up on the site? Have you seen similar alerts show up on other areas of the site?

believing all the lies that are being told to them by their Celebrity friends that are manipulating the terms of service of Facebook to their benefits , while innocent fb users keep getting sanctions put on their fb accounts , some have even had their accounts closed by unfounded complaints ."

  3. Ok is there someone at this site I can contact direct, because you're breaking news weeks after I have the functions uploaded to my account. I showed my group members the new Photo memories screenshots weeks ago and I commented here on August 18th that Facebook were adding external links as well as sites to the search function, but you only published it 3 days ago. I'm guessing you're missing my comments, so if I can get a direct contact perhaps I can inform you more quickly of what I and many others have seen for a while. I upload the info with screenshots to my Facebook group, would be happy to share them here if anyone would simply receive it. Only it's pointless me giving the information to allfacebook via comment thread and not see it published for weeks. Thanks and regards.

  4. Yes even I saw that being done by facebook. Dont know exactly what is it trying? But people getting more noticed, imagine you are working and suddenly you see the upper right side corner of your facebook page and notice the photo memories or recommended photos and you are bound to see that person's profile :) nice!!

  6. Yes, that is something I'd like to know as well! As it is now, mostly annoying people's pictures keep on popping up in recommended photos and I would like to remove this feature or alter its settings so I don't have to see the same photos over and over again…

  7. i want to get rid of recommended photos and facebook photo memories – it's horrible. some things i don't want to see – especially if it's from an album that i don't know the person – or pictures from years ago which will affect relationships today. it's invasive and at times offensive. how can i get it off my facebook account?

  9. Is the person who pops up in your photo memories and recommended photos, the person who views you the most often. a way to find out your facebook stalker!

  10. Photo Memories is a vile, malicious feature that inflicts psychological harm on a daily basis. Facebook is invading our privacy, and this feature is HORRIBLE. it should be removed or at least give us an opt-out feature. I HATE IT. So far, my official questions and complaints have gone unanswered, so I started this group for those who agree: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=15126079158...
