OMG! My Facebook Photos Are Gone!!

-Facebook Photos Icon- No, your Facebook photos aren’t lost. But Facebook’s photo storage hard drive did have some major problems over the weekend. According to the Facebook blog, a routine software upgrade on Friday night resulted in the loss of some 10-15% of its users’ photos. Considering the millions of users (and billions of photos) Facebook has, even a 10% loss is catastrophic. The affected photos are appearing with “question mark” graphics instead of the images themselves.

So far, Facebook has reported that about one-third of the affected photos have been repaired. But that leaves about 66% of Facebook users’ photos still missing. Facebook doesn’t have a complete understanding of what went wrong with the stored photos, as it was a simultaneous hardware failure. But rest assured, Facebook wants you to know that it still has all you photos, thanks to its cautious forethought to store multiple copies of the data. If you were worried about complete photo loss from Facebook, it’s a valid concern.

Not only is data loss a concern for web-based services in general, but after the recent backlash Facebook witnessed as a result of the changes made to its Terms of Services, the issue of who owned the content uploaded to Facebookis a relevant concern.

Facebook is the largest photo-sharing site on the web right now, so restoring the missing images is a priority for th social network. While new photos uploaded to Facebook should still work properly, the full restoration of all the missing images isn’t expected to be complete until early next week.

That's why I don't trust facebook. This shows that their servers or hardware aren't reliable. So it's better to use fb for fun rather than storing precious data.

@Dan: 100% – 33% = 66%.

However, to both guys who are attacking FB reliability, I don't see on this issue a big deal, as long as data will be recovered and, guess what? Also FB guys knows what is a backup!

If your read all the news about that, it happened that "a few of the hard drives where we store photos apparently failed all at once", something that is rare indeed, but could happen.

Also, on this same news above, is written that "the full restoration of all the missing images isn’t expected to be complete until early next week".

That means that no data is actually lost: it just take some time, but looks like people today can't be patient enough.

2/3 thirds of the "affected" photos. 10-15% Originally affected times 33% still affected means 3 to 5% total photos that are still affected at the moment.

And you should never rely on someone else to store your "precious" data. Especially when you know they will drastically down sample it.

I don't see what the big deal is? If you upload your photos to Facebook or anywhere else for that matter do you delete the originals off your local hard-drive? If not then no big thing except for the time it takes to load them back to Facebook.

In this day and age I can't believe that people actually expect these providers not to lose data. With the enormous amount of data Facebook handles I am surprised that this doesn't happen more often.

Also what does it cost you to post your photos to Facebook? Exactly, nothing… Remember you get what you pay for!

I’ve been having a problem for weeks not being able to upload any photos. When I create an album, it just clocks and clocks and then locks everything in FB up and I have to close out and start over. I don’t think it’s my computer b/c I’m not having problems with any thing else. Just facebook. Does anyone know what I should do to try and fix this? I hate that I can’t upload and share photos with my friends!

I noticed it over the weekend, but I didn't care. I have every single one of my digital photos in four other places–saved on CD (I may switch to USB drives), saved on both my hard drives at work and home, and in my Kodak Gallery account. It sounds like overkill but it's really not, considering it takes seconds to copy photos over to new storage places.

Gone are the days of keeping one copy of negatives under lock and key, so there's no excuse for not utilizing multiple backup options for photos.

Its such a shame that we place so much importance on facebook, i work in mobile customer services and its amazing how many people think their life is going to end just because for some reason they cant get on to face book through their mobile phone – sad state of affairs we live in today…..

It doesn't concern me. I am responsible for copies of my own photos. That's why I have a USB drive for back up. Why should Facebook take that responsibility?

But if it happens a lot, then I have to go through the hassle of uploading repeatedly…..But the photos I had were on their for years, so, really, it's not a concern.

As for property, if I post something on a public forum, I understand that I am submitting it to the public, and it belongs to the magazine I submitted the photo or the article. Facebook isn't responsible to sue everyone who cuts and pastes from Facebook photos.

If I want to "own it" as copyrighted material, I can post it on my own webpage, and I can write on the bottom "copyright" and then I have legal leverage if anyone does anything. But the web is a wide open forum. It's expected.

But I did re-upload new photos and still can't see them…

Facebook's CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced a bevy of features for the social network, including one called Timeline that allows you to chronologically record your entire life via pictures, Facebook updates, Likes, activities, and places you've traveled to and lived. That feature, along with a host of new Facebook apps, are being announced Thursday at Facebook's f8 developers conference.

The overriding theme of the new features announced Thursday were that Facebook shouldn't be just a place to swap messages and photos with friends, but should be a place to preserve your memories and chronicle your life. Zuckerberg wants Facebook to be able to do more than give you the virtual equivalent of a 15-minute chat with a friend, rather an hour-long conversation about your life.

A big part of that new Facebook vision, Zuckerberg says, is supercharging its application platform to allow you to share "everything" on your Facebook profile and Timeline from game activity, music, movies, and what you read online.

However, to both guys who are attacking FB reliability, I don't see on this issue a big deal, as long as data will be recovered and, guess what? Also FB guys knows what is a backup!

If your read all the news about that, it happened that "a few of the hard drives where we store photos apparently failed all at once", something that is rare indeed, but could happen.

Also, on this same news above, is written that "the full restoration of all the missing images isn’t expected to be complete until early next week".

That means that no data is actually lost: it just take some time, but looks like people today can't be patient enough.

2/3 thirds of the "affected" photos. 10-15% Originally affected times 33% still affected means 3 to 5% total photos that are still affected at the moment.

And you should never rely on someone else to store your "precious" data. Especially when you know they will drastically down sample it.

I don't see what the big deal is? If you upload your photos to Facebook or anywhere else for that matter do you delete the originals off your local hard-drive? If not then no big thing except for the time it takes to load them back to Facebook.

In this day and age I can't believe that people actually expect these providers not to lose data. With the enormous amount of data Facebook handles I am surprised that this doesn't happen more often.

Also what does it cost you to post your photos to Facebook? Exactly, nothing… Remember you get what you pay for!

I’ve been having a problem for weeks not being able to upload any photos. When I create an album, it just clocks and clocks and then locks everything in FB up and I have to close out and start over. I don’t think it’s my computer b/c I’m not having problems with any thing else. Just facebook. Does anyone know what I should do to try and fix this? I hate that I can’t upload and share photos with my friends!

I noticed it over the weekend, but I didn't care. I have every single one of my digital photos in four other places–saved on CD (I may switch to USB drives), saved on both my hard drives at work and home, and in my Kodak Gallery account. It sounds like overkill but it's really not, considering it takes seconds to copy photos over to new storage places.

Gone are the days of keeping one copy of negatives under lock and key, so there's no excuse for not utilizing multiple backup options for photos.

It doesn't concern me. I am responsible for copies of my own photos. That's why I have a USB drive for back up. Why should Facebook take that responsibility?

But if it happens a lot, then I have to go through the hassle of uploading repeatedly…..But the photos I had were on their for years, so, really, it's not a concern.

As for property, if I post something on a public forum, I understand that I am submitting it to the public, and it belongs to the magazine I submitted the photo or the article. Facebook isn't responsible to sue everyone who cuts and pastes from Facebook photos.

If I want to "own it" as copyrighted material, I can post it on my own webpage, and I can write on the bottom "copyright" and then I have legal leverage if anyone does anything. But the web is a wide open forum. It's expected.

But I did re-upload new photos and still can't see them…

I have lost just my profile picture AND everyone's profile pic on my pages. I was in the like box on the left side of page and tried to delete something ….then no photos showing. I am pretty much computer challenged and have no idea what to do to fix the problem. It is really annoying. I tried 3 times to upload one of my profile photos but no luck. Please help!

All my photo albums have disappeared! I only have 77 pictures of "just me"! Also I just clicked Photos on my home page and everyone elses pictures showed up…none of which are mine!

its not just the photos that are missing but all the links too, like music etc. Will all of the links be put back too. Laziness on my behalf, dont want to have to go searching for them again, thanks in advance when they do come back. I only noticed that they were all missing lately, wanted to change profile pic.

I lost all my albums with a photos and more than half of my friends are dissapear or deleted!!!
I hope you will answer to me as soon as possible, or i will not use Facebook anymore ! I'm so disappointed !

I have lost pictures of all my friends on my list, just their names I can see but my friends tell me they can see my friends pictures…….anyone know what I did to not be able to see their pictures now, I must have done something to create the mess I'm in now, makes me very sad….any information to help me would be appreciated…..

Brandy again, I love FB but I need my problem solved quickly & so far I have ask so many friends & none know what I did to make my friends pictures disappear & just see their names are showing on my FB…so yes I clicked on something I shouldn't have as my friends say they all see the pictures but me:(

I'm writing again as I do not only NOT see my friends list PICTURES but also I do NOT SEE my friends list pictures either!! Facebook's CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced a bevy of features for the social network, including one called Timeline that allows you to chronologically record your entire life via pictures, Facebook updates, Likes, activities, and places you've traveled to and lived. That feature, along with a host of new Facebook apps, are being announced Thursday at Facebook's f8 developers conference.

The overriding theme of the new features announced Thursday were that Facebook shouldn't be just a place to swap messages and photos with friends, but should be a place to preserve your memories and chronicle your life. Zuckerberg wants Facebook to be able to do more than give you the virtual equivalent of a 15-minute chat with a friend, rather an hour-long conversation about your life.

A big part of that new Facebook vision, Zuckerberg says, is supercharging its application platform to allow you to share "everything" on your Facebook profile and Timeline from game activity, music, movies, and what you read online.
