Facebook Now Helping New Page Administrators Get Started

Facebook is testing out a new way of getting new Facebook Page administrators to get their Page off the ground and active. As pictured below, the company is encouraging administrators to post status updates, set up their mobile phone to sync with the Page, and finally syncing the Page with their twitter account. It’s a small change, however it’s a smart attempt by Facebook to get Facebook Page administrators to begin posting content on their Pages immediately rather than leaving them blank.

The fact that the company is also actively encouraging users to set up the Twitter-syncing, a feature that first rolled out last year. This continued integration with Twitter illustrates how Facebook has decreased their emphasis on competing with Twitter, who is having plenty of issues scaling their service. By inserting this new call to action, Facebook should be able to get more administrators through the Page configuration process.

As Facebook expands, the company continues to focus on iterating the product around changes that will increase conversion of various actions throughout the site. In this case, the change is intended to get those administrators who aren’t familiar with the Pages product through the configuration process. Making the product as easy to use will most definitely help the product gain more traction. Have you seen this new process while creating Facebook Pages?

  7. Why doesn't Facebook just go right ahead and make a tab called "Jumping The Shark".

  8. Seriously. It's annoying. How can one hide it?

  9. It disappears as you complete more tasks and get more people to Like your Page, with some tasks considered more important than others – i.e. if you only have the Twitter task left, it only takes a handful of fans to get rid of the tab.

  10. This is a crap solution, as noted by the commenters and also a Facebook help centre ticket I raised. You lose a tab that you could have an extra feature on until the Get Started one goes away, and they're basically forcing you to add Twitter and your mobile. And there's no manual hide.

    Lame effort at "help".

  12. Agreed with all of the above. I don't want to use any of those options, but there is no way to get rid of the tab. It automatically opens to that tab every time I load the page. Major annoyance.

  13. Folks, this has fired a lot of anger over in the FB forums. FB is not answering any questions about it, and a user group has been formed to press the issue.

Here is the link. Please join. We want to make a loud enough noise to get FB to adjust the tab, let us opt out.

  14. OK if you have a Twitter Account and actually want FB to connect with it and a mobile phone on a network that's in the drop down list FB give you and that's capable of emailing, but I don't have either, so can't get rid of this unwanted extra tab.

  15. Thanks for the info Matt. That's a terrible way to have to get rid of something. Oh well. Facebook does what it wants I guess.

  16. I'll add my comment. The "Getting Started Page" is so annoying. Face Book Get Rid of please.

  17. Boooo!

    Comment by Kyle — July 14, 2010 @ 1:27 pm

  18. This may be a repost: forgive me if it is.

A FB usergroup has formed, over 130 Admins today, trying to be heard that this Tab needs to be modified. FB is ignoring the issue, no official replies or help can be found anywhere.

I see Danny Brown posted above, he is one of our voices.

Please join the group, if you have not. Please help us get our message through – our frustration at FB is growing.

  20. The getting started tab is very annoying and FB seems to have ignored all inquiry's and seems to not be at least making comments to ease the frustrations of their users. "We have heard your comments and we are working to fix" it would be nice to see. PLEASE GET RID OF THAT TAB!!!

    Comment by Tiger Paw — July 16, 2010 @ 8:25 am

  21. Getting Started tab: Update

Anger at this tab is fading as FB makes adjustments behind the scenes. Fan triggers that were supposed to deactivate the tab seem to be working for more users, the tab is leaving their business page when they reach a certain number of 'Likes'.

But FB stumbled in the dark through this whole fiasco. They never addressed the issue anywhere. That sort of attitude might drive users completely off the platform next time a blunder like this comes up.

Has FB learned anything? Not likely.

  22. It appears that the tab is gone now . . . :)

  26. It is aggravating to me too. How many people must one know in order for it to go away? I'm plugging my page. So, look me up. If you like my page, I'll like yours. Kind of the ole scratch my back/your back kind of thing. What else can we do? I'm PhasmataJ

  27. Facebook, please let us get rid of that thing! Once or twice, ok… but who is Facebook to decide when we've "gotten started" enough???

  28. I wish Facebook would stop changing every day.

  30. Hi there! Do you know if they make any plugins to safeguard against hackers? I'm kinda paranoid about losing everything I've worked hard on. Any suggestions?

  31. Do you know if they have any type of integration with Google +1?

    Comment by spray foam kits — January 7, 2012 @ 12:06 pm

  32. I even used FB ads to get more likes because I couldn't figure out why that stupid tab wouldn't go away, then I posted a status update through the button on the tab, and it went away. It's just dumb.
