Back in January we wrote that Facebook will not begin charging for the site, however the rumor won’t disappear. Thanks to a group called “I’m quitting facebook when the start charging $50/per month on July 8, 2010″, hundreds of thousands of users are convinced that the company will begin charging for the services in a couple months. That group is actually completely inaccurate and Facebook has no intention of doing so ever.
Despite Facebook continuously dismissing claims that the company will not charge for their service, the rumors continue to spread. Ironically Facebook is the platform that is always used to perpetuate the false claims. While the fee has ranged from group to group, it’s a pretty much guaranteed way of driving hundreds of thousands of users to your group.
Other false groups have grown by scammers, some of which have actually extracted money from unsuspecting users who register for mobile subscriptions in exchange for supposedly “free” gift cards. All of these groups and Pages are absolutely false and in some cases can actually result in loss of money. Despite Facebook attempting to shut down all of these groups, some are occasionally able to get through the company’s filters as is the case with the group listed in this article.
So in case you were wondering: Facebook is not currently and never will charge to access the service.

Thanks for dispelling the BS urban legends out there, Nick. Jeez, scammers/spammers will stop at nothing. I recently learned that many of these ginormous generic fan pages (now Community Pages) are often started by opportunists too. Shame.

I wish people would inform themselves before getting others involved in things… and here I am duped by a friend as well. I'm glad to hear it and will remove myself from the group.

I just heard that rumor today and came to check it out. Glad to hear that it is not true. I could understand if there were a charge of $50 a month, but how terrible would it be if there were a charge of $1 a year. Would you begrudge them that? It is really sad how everybody wants something for nothing and threatens to leave if not treated like kings. Why can't people just say "Thank you and I appreciate it." Because of Facebook, look at all you can do. I think $1 a year, god, a month, is hardly thanks enough. If this were a business of all those complainers, I doubt it would be free of charge. Thank you Facebook for all you do for everyone everywhere.

The recent story is that there's an effort to try and get 30,000 people to present a petition to Facebook to try and get Facebook not to impose a charge on its members. A friend of mine is going to look into whether this is so or not — because as he says, if it's so, he and his family are going to quit Facebook. You told everyone that you weren't in 2009; you may need to tell everybody in May 2010.

I wish they would charge — then people would stop using it. I hate the continued privacy violations… I want to go back to a life where my life isn't spilled out by my "friends" over cyberspace, where my photos are not "tagged" without my permission, and my life is not open to advertisers.

I hope they do charge so the morons, children, idiots who make bogus fan pages, and deadbeats who slow the site down will leave.

If they did charge, I'd still be on there and all the idiots would return back from where they came, MYSPACE.
Comment by DSM — May 4, 2010 @ 5:01 pm
Glad to the truth, I actually just heard the rumor today
Comment by Kevin — May 11, 2010 @ 12:37 pm
hope this true information about no charge is coming from the top boys of facebook
Comment by ian richardson — May 12, 2010 @ 3:16 am
I cant beleive that some of these morons still dont beleive that there will be no charge. Wait then again, I do. Most of the idiots on facebook will beleive anything, just go through and see what kind of fan pages they join! Most of them dont even get what the site is all about.

Paypal doesn't charge… It's a service offered free so what is your point?
Comment by Brandon — September 23, 2011 @ 3:11 pm
facebook makes plenty of money without charging its users. The company is worth hundreds of millions (or probably billions) of dollars, and I think that they know they'd lose a lot of users just on principle if they began charging any price. Sure we can be thankful for the convenience, but seeing the way money is tossed around in big corporations makes me not really feel bad about having a free service.
