Just seven months after first launching Facebook Lite, the company has decided to shut the service down. Facebook Lite was a simplified version of the site which was supposedly “optimized for people with slow connections” but apparently not enough people were using it. Funny enough, many of the people that I knew were using the site were users with fast connections who liked a slimmed version of the site.
First noticed by ReadWriteWeb, Facebook has not said anymore aside from the following message which they posted on the company’s Facebook Page:
Thanks to everyone who tried out Facebook Lite. We’re no longer supporting it, but learned a lot from the test of a slimmed-down site. If you used Lite, you’ll now be taken to the main Facebook.com site.
While the company has made numerous attempts at creating slimmed down versions of the site, I would guess that maintaining both the main version of the site as well as the simplified versions simultaneously has proven difficult. Additionally, Blake Ross, who was the developer behind Facebook Lite, is now focused on other projects including the new Facebook questions product.

I've been on facebook for two years, slogging along, occasionally cussing lol, cuz of being on dialup, and this is the FIRST I've ever HEARD of Facebook Lite! *shakes head*..
Comment by Raye — April 20, 2010 @ 11:21 am
I guess I'm not too surprised by this move. So many people nowadays have fast enough connections to support Facebook normally that the only possible audience would've have been those who wanted a simpler Facebook like you mentioned.
Nice try Facebook, you'll just have to rely on your normal Facebook to dominate my down time!
Comment by Steve — April 20, 2010 @ 12:14 pm
This actually sucks, but explains why I couldn't get in at work. Believe it or not, facebook.com was blocked at work, but not the lite version. So at work I was still able to use facebook!
Comment by Nick — April 20, 2010 @ 1:20 pm
This was great for mobile use, without resorting to the mobile version.
Comment by Chris — April 20, 2010 @ 6:08 pm
Well that sucks. The regular facebook site is a convoluted pile of dog manure. Facebook gave me what I wanted, statuses…the rest of the stuff is for my mom.
Comment by jamie — April 21, 2010 @ 4:09 am
I didn't even know Facebook Lite existed.

Now if they could fix Facebook for blackberry. Theni might use it more often. Right now it sucks

I agree to you KC,Facebook lite is the only way i can open in the office to get an update for my friends since my Boss locked the main site of facebook.Or is there any other site i can open facebook?I tried proxy but very slow and blard
Comment by Amy — May 20, 2010 @ 1:55 am
This was really not funny. I like the lite version of facebook for my mobile web browser because it won't redirect to mobile facebook not like the regular web FB. And i can upload pix here without using the e-mail with attachment. This sucks!
Comment by ronald — June 8, 2010 @ 2:34 pm
@Amy. .
It depends upon the proxy that you are using.

I am a Sailor. When you're at sea and on satellite, there is no other way to get into Facebook because of connectivity. We all relied on it to communicate with the outside world. This blows.
Comment by beck — August 21, 2010 @ 5:17 am
facebook is dumb…i want facebook lite back!!!!!
Comment by Jiya — October 12, 2010 @ 6:55 am
I only ever used facebook lite because our school hadn't blocked it…now that I'm out of school it doesn't much matter anymore, but it still sucks that they closed it down : (

oh dear, what has life come to when you cant exist without facebook.i have it but only to keep in touch with distant family and friends.but what would happen if the internet went down.i know i would survive.alot of you seem to have put to much into facebook and made it your life,it should just be an extra extension of the many things you can do.and if your in work then you should be working.bosses block these sites for a reason.because it is like a drug to many of you.
