Facebook Letting Users Unsubscribe From Feed Story Notifications

Tired of getting updates every time someone comments on your popular friend’s status update because you were the first to comment? Worry no longer! Facebook has begun testing a feature which lets users opt-out of those notifications. By clicking a simple “Unsubscribe” link (as pictured below), you can turn off notifications from stories that you comment or like. It’s a useful feature that can help you instantly reduce the noise.

It’s an extremely subtle addition, however there are many users who will be grateful for this addition. Commenting on a person’s status update was instantly a way to get tons of notifications and updates in the past, however now you can safely comment without worrying about getting bombarded with noise.

Thanks to Denis Baranov for the tip!

  1. Very interesting. It would be even better if it allowed you to receive notifications on the item from friends only.

  2. It always says "replied to your post" but they are hardly ever talking to me.

  3. Killer feature…but i can't see it yet

  4. or better yet, let you subscribe to someones post without having to like it or comment on it. maybe you want to follow it but don't want anyone to know you are following it.

  5. It would be much better if you could select the friends whose posts you want to read. When you play games, you have friends you never talk to and don't want to, it's just to play the games, but you are bogged down in what they post, even when you hide the games and them. I want to be able to select to get postings from my real friends! That is what would be better. I miss alot of good stuff cause I can't or don't get to every ones page that I want to!!

  6. Finally! I have been trying to delete notifications for SO long. The help section says that you can stop them, but you can't. And when you get them, they don't go away. Almost as frustrating as all the dumb suggestions cluttering up the right side of the screen. For the longest time, it kept telling me to 'reconnect' to my dead friend. Then it wouldn't let me tell them she died because I didn't have all of her private account info. Classic.

  7. About time!! But i can't find this advertised feature.

  8. In the past people were bombed with notifications after they commented on a post, but then Facebook restricted the notification to the next comments after you commented. I would also like to have a option to "subscribe" a thread, so that I get a notification for EVERY comment until I unsubscribe.

  9. Awesome feature. Can't wait until it gets activated on my account.

  10. I agree with Chuck, it would be awesome if you could subscribe to posts without having to like them or comment on them. Often a friend of mine will post an interesting and/or sensitive topic and I want to see what kind of conversation ensues before I jump in on the dialogue.

  13. I need this so badly! I was just complaining on my status the other day about too many notifications, and got a lot of comments from people about how much they hate it, too.

  14. It has been on my account since day one and I love it. I use it frequently. But, my husband's account has never had it. Why is it available to some, but not to everyone?

    Comment by Melissa — September 22, 2010 @ 6:05 pm

  15. Seems like its been removed.

    Comment by Gavin — October 6, 2010 @ 3:18 am

  16. they removed the unsubscribe feature today.. :( i guess it dropped their users time on site which most likely reduces their advertising conversion.

  17. I just noticed that it has disappeared from my news feed, too. That sucks, because it was very useful.

    Comment by Derek — October 8, 2010 @ 8:24 pm

  18. Yes its removed! :-(

    why oh why!

This was one of the best improvisations they did in recent times!

  19. I no longer have an option, I dont get any notifications after any of my likes. There are some post I am interested in hearing what people are commenting. do you guys know how I can get notifications on me hitting the like after a post?

  20. I am wondering how to make sure that someone receives notifications and if they don't, how do they turn it on or off as the case maybe.

  21. I want to unsubscribe from facebook

    Comment by Marjorie Forbes — May 26, 2011 @ 4:38 pm

  22. I just joined Facebook & I can't believe how retarded it is. For instance every time one of your friends clicks like on some stranger's page/comment etc & etc, you get told about it. I don't care about somebody I don't know.

According to Facebook help, you're supposed to teach it not to send those messages by hitting spam on each message, but they just keep coming. And I only have two active friends listed that's not blocked; I can't imagine how anybody could cope with 30 friends, yet alone 400.

So you're effectively forced to block your friends so that you don't get spammed. It's retarded Facebook.

  24. If you unsubscribe all from someone, and they are a neighbor in a game you are playing…do you still receive the gifts and help from the game?
