To celebrate 500 million users, Facebook has launched a new product called “Facebook Stories”. The product, which was designed and conceptualized by the team over at JESS3 and powered by Involver, lists the stories of Facebook users that have been impacted by Facebook. The company has been posting stories on their blog in recent months, however this tool is a platform that lets anybody share their Facebook stories.
In a personal video to Facebook users, Mark Zuckerberg thanks everyone for starting a movement. Also included with the announcement what a portfolio of thank you messages from employees, something that we first wrote about on Friday. While Facebook has been preparing to announce the 500 million milestone for close to two months now, it became pretty clear that the announcement was impending.
The real question now is: when will Facebook hit 1 billion users? We’re currently projecting the company to reach 1 billion active members in 2012. While it’s an ambitious goal, Facebook is one of a couple of sites that can state such grand ambitions. If you want to view the new Facebook stories product, you can view it here. Additionally you can view the video from Mark Zuckerberg below.

Well alot of ifs for that and if China was sudden to cave in and imbrace democraticity and free speech and allow its over 1 billion people the right and ease to use Facebook it could be even earlier but who knows the projected Facebook milestone may share with Euro 2012 and London 2012 Olympics.

Dang! Wish I could have been a part. I actually wrote two stories inspired by facebook.
The first is the birth of a baby girl through the interactions of her mother who is a facebook fanatic. She actually updated her status on the way to the hospital.

The second is a lost dog found many miles away through non mutual facebook friends. Unbelievable happy ending!

I can't believe how stone-faced and bland he is. You would think that 500 million users would get him a little jazzed. Suggestion: Have a little fun with your 1 Billion Users video!

In late March of this year, I set up a Facebook group called Down 40 by September 1, to help me lose 40 lbs by that date. You can see that page at http://www.facebook.com/?ref=home#!/group.php?gid…
I also set up a table to track my exercise routine and weekly weigh-ins. That one is at http://www.lornepike.com/down40.shtml
Did Facebook make a difference? As of this morning, I am down 31 lbs and am pretty much right on target to lose 40 by September 1. There is no question in my mind that Facebook helped me stay on track, keeping me encouraged and focused. Thanks Facebook!

I really like Steve – I suspect he is misunderstood simply because he is so genuine and authentic – I believe he truly cares about cooperation & community rather than commercial gain.
OK yes – he's human so he's not perfect – but don't throw out the baby with the bathwater so to speak.

impressive number but i wonder how many of those accounts are multiple accounts. As gamers set up different accounts so there walls aren't bombarded by spam!

Why would he be "jazzed"? He KNOWS 250 million of them are FAKE SPAM accounts and ppl playing stupid games and impersonating people who don't want to use their real acct name to spam and incite with racist posts. If ANY SNS service was going to reach 1 billion by now it would have been China since THEY next to Japan, are the most connected on the planet and they have the corresponding population. But currently their messenger services only top out at around 750 million. Yeah they blew FB away long ago. And yeah, most of those are triplicate accounts for gaming and keeping friends lists separate.

someone should set up a website for negative stories about facebook, such as how they disable legitimate users accounts with no comeback, threaten big lawsuits against innocent websites etc etc
