HitWise is reporting that for the week ending March 13, Facebook overtook Google as the site to get the most US visits. Facebook also reached the top spot for Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, when people logged on to send best wishes to relatives. Last time we suggested that the next time Facebook took the number one spot, it would be permanent, and if the Hitwise data is accurate, this could be a sustained lead.
Facebook also was #1 for the weekend of March 6th and 7th, which shows that they are steadily climbing in terms of total number of page views and visitors, and their rate of growth is something Google is most certainly fearing. The share of visits to Facebook.com for this week has increased 185% over the same week last year, while Google increased only 9% in the same time. Facebook and Google accounted for 14% of all US internet visits last week.

With over 400 million users and growing, Facebook is quickly becoming the prime destination for many users of the web. While Google is used for search, Facebook is the main tool used to communicate with friends, and more recently, to play games.









I wonder if there will be such thing as Facebook SEO?
@Jonny- There already is a little Facebook SEO since all fan pages are indexed in Google and the page title and blurb (the text box under the profile picture)are both indexed in Google too. The links in the blurb are nofollow links so they won’t help with “linkjuice” but will help with being found in SERPs. Of course the discovery of a brand from a Facebook friend within the Facebook ecosystem versus Google’s endorsement in search results is much more powerful and that’s where the real opportunity lies with Facebook for businesses.
Searches made using the search toolbar in Firefox aren’t included in the results. I don’t ever goto http://www.google.com to perform a search and I don’t know many that don’t. I imagine that if it were included Google.com would have an exponentialy higher visitor count than facebook. Logic would tell us Facebook couldn’t possible overtake google, especially with popular search terms on Google like ‘facebook’ and ‘facebook login’.
It’s annoying me to the point of boiling that every news resource + dog is running the story today and yesterday, it’s a non story…
