Facebook How To: Import Your Blog To Your Public Profile

-Notes Icon-I’ve received countless emails over the past two weeks from users that have been confused about integrating their blog into their new public profile. I don’t blame them for the confusion as it took me days to figure out how to get this working. Finally after a little bit of exploring, I figured out how to get your blog imported via the Facebook Notes application.

Getting Notes installed on your Facebook Page is a little bit convoluted because you need to get to the application about page which is not readily linked anywhere on the site. After using the application search functionality within the application directory I found the Notes application page. After visiting the Notes application page, click “Add to Page”.

-Add Notes to Page Screenshot-

From the next page you will select which page you would like to have it added to as illustrated in the picture about. Proceed to your Facebook public profile (aka “Page”) and click on “Edit Page”. You can then scroll down and edit your notes application at which point there is the option to import an external blog. The best part about this is that all blog posts will automatically show up as stories in your “fans” feeds.

Status Updates or Automatically Import Notes?
At this point you may be wondering whether or not it’s a better practice to link to your new blog posts via a status update or to let the Notes application automatically import the notes for you. Personally, I prefer the status updates for two reasons. First, you can post a status as soon as you’ve posted and you don’t need to wait for the Notes application to periodically scan your feed for new posts.

The second reason is that status updates can be much more conversational. Rather than just linking to your new post your could also include a question to fans to get them to participate in the conversation. For those individuals that are more hands off with their public profiles (something I don’t recommend doing), letting the Notes application automatically import blog posts will be much easier.

So how do you alert your fans to new blog posts? Were you confused about integrating the Notes application and your Facebook public profile as well?

  1. There seems to be a problem with the RSS feed being automatically updated. I am using this solution to import my Twitter messages. I can import the tweets upon initial setup, but any new tweets I send are not updated in my Notes tab. I could not find any solutions to this other than stop the import and start all over again.

  2. It's true that the Notes app is oddly buried and that Facebook doesn't give you a lot of control over what feed shows up where.

If anyone is curious about splitting up a multi-user blog so that only your posts go to your Facebook profile, we blogged about it a few weeks ago:

  3. thanks Nick… one question tho — how do you automatically update the “public profile” status when you publish a new story?

  5. Nick, so are you saying that if we had pages before the updates took place that we have to add the notes application all over again and start fresh? Still confused as to why my pre-New Pages pages are not importing their RSS feeds.

  6. The blog feed import via Notes is not working at all. It does the initial import and then never updates. I'm using the Notes post-New Pages. Also, if on the Notes page you try to add a Comment to a post, when you click "Comment" it just disappears and doesn't post.

The sucker is definitely broken! We've reported this on our HyperArts blog (http://www.hyperarts.com/blog).

Facebook has been silent on the issue although, I suspect, they've got *many* fish to fry!

  7. I’m with Ryan – I already had the Notes app installed. I can’t seem to get the blog importer to update automatically. On initial import, the ten most recent were imported no problem but nothing since. I’ve contacted Facebook support – but I suspect they’re a little busy these days. ;)

  8. While this is great way to post content to the page, imported notes do not push into fans newsfeeds.

  9. ‘link to your new blog posts via a status update’

How do you do said update?

  10. The problem with “Notes” is that if you use it in this way for your public profile, it also appears & updates your personal profile page too. You can’t set up one “Notes” app for your public profile and then another for your personal profile.

An example of where this would be a problem is if I wanted my personal blog to update my personal profile and my Twitter RSS feed to update my public one. Can’t be done.

  11. What I don’t like about it is that (even before the new design) I used to have a WordPress gadget (well, I still have the gadget, but it doesn’t work) that identified “Lorraine has uploaded a new WordPress blog”. Now, though, my blog entries are only “notes”, just as my “25 things” or other random items I may post as notes. I don’t like to not be able to differentiate/clarify that THESE are my blog entries. And my “notes” page is ridiculously long.

    I am cranky about this.

  12. I’m reiterating the above question [Nick, so are you saying that if we had pages before the updates took place that we have to add the notes application all over again and start fresh? Still confused as to why my pre-New Pages pages are not importing their RSS feeds.]. I’ve had my blog imported to my profile and to several Pages (now, public profiles) for months now and they are no longer being automatically updated. It seems like quite a lot has been lost in this new facebook launch.

  16. I've developed blogging application for Facebook:

    http://www.facebook.com/apps/application.php?id=1...

It allows you to import posts from external blogs and display them at your profile (both profile box and profile tab are supported).

I think this application may be useful when you're not satisfied with Notes.

  17. I've got the same issue, notes will show up on the page, but not publish to Fan's feeds. I've started a forum topic for this on the app page – please comment.

  18. I need to import notes from a blog, but I need them to be seen from my contact's home page.

Im able to import them but not to show them directly on start page. I know that if I have a lot of friends, It's gonna be difficult to show my notes with the posts of all activities and comments but i want to try. Does anyone knows any app or way of doing this with notes app?

thx a lot and sorry for my english

  19. I'm wondering if I already have my blog importing as notes to my personal profile, if I can import that same blog to my public profile also.

When I follow the instructions in the article above, the drop down menu for ADD NOTES? only gives me my groups as an option, not my public profiles.

I would like my friends to follow my blog (and everything else about me) but would also like the FB public to follow my blog w/o all my personal stuff too.

Thx and be well, xo-Carla aka OneHealthyGirl.com

  21. Are Notes no longer automatically feeding to a Public Profile Wall tab for anyone else? I import a blog into Notes on my page, and my latest post (from yesterday) shows up in the Notes box on my Boxes tab, but hasn't appeared on my Wall yet. There's usually a few hours lag time but it's been more than 24 hours now.

Wrote to FB Help Center, awaiting response. Just wondered if others were having the same problem. I tried removing and re-"installing" Notes on the Public Profile, nothing.

  22. I created several Pages, each of which has a different blog imported into it via Notes. None of the fans of any of these pages gets an update when new blog posts show up at the Page. However, Notes at each Page are updated in a timely manner. How do I get the updates to post on the Wall of each fan? I'm a fan of some Pages where this works OK . . . how are they doing it?

  23. Hi there

I have always been importing my blog entries automatically to my FB Notes Application.

Recently, I realised that the photos I have within my blog entries (both current & old ones) are not showing at all on FB Notes. So my Notes are only showing text.

I believe that the photos were properly imported previously so wonder if this is a recent bug in FB? I wrote in to FB but have not gotten any response yet.

Appreciate if anyone has any clue about this issue?

    Thanks!

  24. Additionally if you already have notes installed on your page, do the following:

    edit page;

    notes – options

    edit;

top right of the area "notes setiings" click on edit import settings

    then add your url there.

Note that it does not have to be a .rss link it can be a forward slash i.e. domain-name.com/blog

  33. Facebook Like pages are a great way to establish your expertise in your business niche. Publishing a blog is another way to share information with your target market and the search engines love them. Blogs can be indexed in as quickly as just 10 minutes after you make a change.
